Back before the 80s, milkcrates used to be exactly wide enough to hold an album. This was great until people started stealing milkcrates from behind business to store their albums. So milk companies changed the standard design so albums would no longer fit. Best place to get the old style is probably thrift shops that take record donations, since most people just drop them off in the crate, and the store puts the entire crate out for sell. They go fast though.
Barring that, appropriately sized card board boxes, or specially designed shelves that hold albums.
