American Summer Music Festivals: The Choicening
JC of DII think we're fucked up.I know I am.Registered Userregular
In discussing SXSW with some friends at the bar tonight, we decided that sitting in South Dakota is no fun and that we were actually going to do something about for a change, in the form of going to a festival this summer.
So uh...none of us really know much about the music festivals going on nowadays. Optimally it'd be a campground type setup and the music would be a varied lineup. Get good enough music and the campground setup doesn't matter, though.
We're tentatively looking anytime after May to mid-September, and all I've really looked into so far is Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Summerfest in Milwaukee - which I hadn't heard of before, but the few headliners they have scheduled so far are awesome.
Bonnaroo is looking most likely to fit the bill for both the campground & lineup qualities, but it's also the only one with any big lineup listed so far.
Any suggestions on other festivals I've yet to look into? Thoughts on why I should/shouldn't go to any of the few I've come across so far?

The one time I'm able to go to Warped Tour, and the lineup looks like it's gonna suck. Figures.

someone also said Kayne but I'm taking that one with a grain of salt because isn't he already doing Summerfest?
after herrrr Fallon performance I would love to see Lykke Li perform some music
pitchfork has a p. good lineup this year too
I haven't been to a propert concert in years because no matter how much I like the band or how good the concert is, I'm just not really a big concert guy
haven't been to a festival either
Animal Collective is doing things in and around SF soon though, wish I was getting there a little earlier!!
Well, they might be better in a non-festival setting. I saw them at bonnaroo in 09. But instead of a setlist they just sort of meandered aimlessly and only occasionally approached something that might be considered a song. It was just pretty dull and monotonous, and I got a wicked sunburn.
in the past animal collective has always tended to not play much in terms of songs people have heard before. i've heard the term 'jam band' thrown around a lot.

This is pretty much the entire reason Fram and Jordyn moved to Seattle.
This is pretty much the entire reason anybody does anything in South Dakota. Bored? Spend your money and drink. Tired of drinking? Save your money and move. Don't drink? See step 2.
Good people, just boring as hell unless you're over 50 or just way into farming.

Gonna do all the drugs and see DFA1979.
I don't think I could stand a music festival.
But then, I've only ever seen little bands.

SXSW would be awesome but it's way too expensive.

Spencer Krug got drunk on Jameson, and then some of the roof fell on him so he came up to me and was like "look at these pieces of roof in my beer"
and I fainted dead away, and he caught me, and we kissed
ok that last part is not real but he DID come up to me and show me his roofbeer
they were super good even though it was the worst venue in nyc
they consistently put on an awesome show
i didn't really care for expo 86, but i saw them do it live and i was so stoked
although nothing beats seeing them in a tiny ass venue in eugene for the apologies to the queen mary tour with holy fuck opening for them
best show, goddamn
Tickets are sold out and I'm sure have been for awhile though, but that would be a hell of a time.
Coachella has a great lineup too but it's just happening too early for a couple of the people that want to do this thing.
Still seems like those three I had found already are the major players for festivals in that timeframe, is that about right?
