    stuff

T2 always felt about 10-15% too slow. Just enough to be constantly annoying. You'd be on a route and miss that next hill by just that last little bit. I think this is what makes the T2 maps feel more closed in and slow, you can't actually go long distances before that happens and kills your momentum. Once they had gotten past the patch hell they started with, I thought T2 was the better overall game except for this slower speed. It's too bad they folded Dynamix before they could actually do any proper gameplay tweaks and polishing.

Tribes 2 was definitely designed to push teams towards group play. Base layout, defenses, and deployables hampered lone-wolf play. Capping the movement speed, especially of heavies (and honestly, thank god for it, because it really did get ridiculous in T1), pushed that vehicle use. And restricting the pilot/gunner roles it again forced teamwork. Sadly, being forced to rely on others in a team game to be effective does piss some people off.

I'm just a newb who came in with Tribes 2 here, but something about the flight in those videos, and maybe the skiing, does seem a little off to me.

It almost seems like it's too easy for momentum to get lost when cornering or switching directions in mid-air, or like the player character doesn't have as much weight as it should--not in terms of being slow to accelerate, but in terms of being fast to decelerate when coming down on a flat patch of ground.

It might just be the base run speed being higher that's throwing me off, and the thing where I love Tribes 2 more than life itself, but I'm not entirely sold on this yet. I really hope that it clicks for me, though. I want a new Tribes game to love so hard.

got a chance to swing by the tribes ascend booth at pax, the game really does feel tribesy, my only concern as I thought was that the energy runs out very quickly (even as a light) so it threw off my skiing quite a bit, still got to rock some midair spinfusor discs, my only real problem was how fast energy drained, it is much faster then tribes or tribes 2. Maybe I did it wrong but I was 95% sure I had an energy pack (called something else) and I was definitely light armor.

Only suggestion to devs would be to give a bigger energy bar and less recharge.

It drains even faster than Tribes 2? Jesus. That could be alleviated by making you ascend faster than you did in Tribes 2 but crap, sometimes it felt like I was running on a D battery in Tribes 2.

The Pathfinder can fly around at a million miles an hour pretty easily, but yea, other classes really have to get good at the skiing in order to not be constantly running on fumes and it does kinda seem that the regen was almost added in order to make spinfuser jumping more of a regular thing.

it may have been the map I was playing too, it was similar to katabatic, the fact one of the generated names for the bloodeagle team was 'thegreateagle' kept throwing me off too

I was playing as a pathfinder, the pack just felt so weak, especially for a light with energy pack

Basically, you can pre order the right to buy from their cash shop first?

Not liking the sound of their little VIP deal.

"“VIP” is a special account status that will be available to those that purchase it in Tribes: Ascend. Those with VIP status will have priority login, access to exclusive servers, and will earn Tokens and Experience faster inside the game, allowing them to unlock items faster."

Great? I get to spend and earn more cash shop dollars to buy the loadouts and weapons with. There is no way to have all of the weapons and armor unlocked for you. They force you into their shop. Not happy about that. Also, VIP people get their own maps and servers? Sounds like a good way to fragment the community. I can see it happening now. Don't get a chance to play the VIP only maps as often because the public ones see all the action.

The VIP having separate servers "with their own maps" is something that REALLY turns me off about this game. F2P is fine, and I don't mind paying for cosmetic or convenience items but when you are fracturing your community between those that paid and those that didn't it really bothers me.

You can't have a full retail product AND F2P model at the same time - that doesn't make any sense.

I played all of the Tribes games, and enjoyed them all (T:V not so much). I played T:A @ PAX and enjoyed it, but I didn't feel very mobile in it. I really want this to do well but I have very little faith in the dev team, Global Agenda was a trainwreck and this seems to be even more so.

Well that's just it...there is no version that is the full retail product.

Even the $30 VIP people still have to use their little tokens to buy weapons and armors from the cash shop. You get no special in game items given to you. You basically get first in line for the shop.

I'll hate them forever if they screw this up. I grew up on tribes games.

I doubt that will stand, vip players will want to play on populated servers anyway, and the best servers are always player run.

If players cant run their own servers that will be a serious gimp though.

So, Hi-Rez isn't really giving me a lot of confidence with this game so far. I played it at PAX and it felt OK - but lately on their forums they just aren't doing very well.

They made a really good post explaining quite a few things, and raising some new questions:
    http://forum.hirezstudios.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=568530#p568530
Thanks for the summary. I'll be interested to see how this list changes once people have the opportunity to play in beta.

    A few comments:

    1) Hitscan: We have been looking at this item. In the latest builds we are playing internally, we have converted a couple formerly hitscan weapons to projectile (the Nova Colt and Chaingun). We've also been working on several things to make our projectile-based weapons feel better. We'll be watching the numbers closely to assess the impact of these changes and make further adjustments as needed. Right now, I believe the Sniper Rifle, the Infiltrator's SMG and the Ranger's SMG as the only non-shotgun (longer range) hitscan weapons in the game ---> and all of those still have distance limits and damage falloff.

    2) Lack of Friendly Fire: We believe that having "no friendly fire" is the most "pub friendly" format for the game and most appropriate and fun for quick matches in public matches. I expect Friendly Fire to be a server setting once we introduce Private Servers --> so players can choose a server with the format they like and more competitive crowds can establish friendly fire rules.

    3) Loadouts: I think once we get all of the classes in the game and feeling good, the general concept of loadouts will not be an issue for the vast vast majority of players -- and in fact we already see that many players (including some Tribes veterans) respond very favorably to the classes once they get accustomed to them. That is not saying that work doesn't remain to get all of the classes feeling and good and balanced --> that is a major goal of our early beta cycle. Those players that were in Alpha will already notice a ton of changes and adjustments that have been made to the classes in preparation for closed beta.

    4) Speedcap: Throughout nearly all of Alpha testing, there was no real speedcap in the game. In our very latest internal builds (including the one that pre-order customers will get to play later this week), there are in fact some limitations that are imposed at a class level that act effectively as speed caps (with different classes having different caps). It sounds like heresy, and maybe it is in the eyes of some players, but establishing some effective caps on each class has actually allowed us to make the classes a lot more interesting and the game much more broadly fun -- and it seems to solve (or at least make much better) some of the problems we experienced in Alpha that made many players feel very sluggish at low speeds (which was necessary in order to keep a small minority of the player base from reaching game-breaking speeds) . Putting top-end speed constraints into the game has allowed us to make the classes much more interesting, fun and specialized that at least I as a player (and many others) enjoy --> and there are still classes that can still totally go Mach 5 with their hair on fire. This will still be an incredibly fast game by almost any standard --> and in fact our experience is that the game plays much faster for most people since we put in the caps than it did before the caps (since the caps have allowed us to make it much easier for most people to get to more modest speeds). The current thought is that Private Servers would have a flag in which they could tweak a "multiple" on the speedcap --> so if you owned a private server, you could set a multiple of 1.2 to make the caps 20% higher, or set it to, say, 3.0 (as an example), to effectively make the caps go away. [Before you hate on it, please at least play the game in the latest builds].

    5) FOV: There is an FOV slider on the settings menu. Not 100% sure of the issue.

    6) Health Regeneration: We are trying to balance health regeneration around the levels we feel create the must fun "pub" experience in the game. Private Servers, once implemented, will have parameters to change the Health Regen values on that server.

    7) Maps: Our maps continue to go through iteration and I'm sure we'll find many things in beta to help make them better. The Bella Omega and Arx Novina maps have gone through major changes that no one outside of the studio has seen --> and all the maps are being continually tweaked.

    8) Modding: Modding is not on our roadmap at the moment. What is on the roadmap is a dedicated, professional dev team that will be continually supporting and making improvements to the game. We think that will offer the most value to the most players over the long haul, and things like server flags and other tools will give players a lot of freedom to tailor the game for themselves. I'd never rule out some form of modding in the game's history, but it's not work being currently planned for.

    9) OOB Grid: I think most players in the Alpha (even Tribes vets) found this a much bigger issue on paper than it winds up being in the actual gameplay. That said, we will look at tweaking the OOB boundaries where we feel it really help the gameplay (we have tech limitations from entirely removing them).

    10) Weak Disc Jumps: We've made this better and will continue to look on a class by class level whether we should ramp it up more.

    11) Demo Functionality: This is planned functionality.

    12) Spectator Mode: This is planned functionality.

    13) Weapon Size: In general, the weapon size "issue" has tended to much bigger from those people watching videos or looking at screenshots than from people that have actually played the game. WE had several people in Alpha that were very vocal on this issue prior to playing the game that later said they did not find it a problem once they played. That said, some models have been adjusted some and we'll continue to look for opportunities to tweak if user feedback warrants it on a weapon by weapon basis.

    14) Drop Speed: Something we've been looking at. MIxed opinions both internally and externally on this, from what I have gathered.

    15) Grappler: We have decided to add a grappler to every class.

    16) Visor Crack: A lot of people like it. I wouldn't rule out putting an option in around removing that one day, but we have a lot of stuff to get in the game before we look at that (to be perfectly honest).

[just joking on #15 . I wouldn't totally rule out having a grappler on a class at some point in the game's history, but it's not on the current roadmap]

Then when people were discussing things, they lock the thread.

Hopefully they come out with a good game, but refusing to even talk to the community about game mechanics/etc is really not instilling confidence in me.

Well, the $30 isn't just to play beta. It is their game "preorder", comes with VIP status (which is pretty controversial from what I understand), tokens etc.

I have come to terms with the fact that it can't possibly be as good as TRIBES. Maybe it'll be up to TRIBES 2 levels, hopefully better, but as long as it's not down with Vengeance, it'll still be worth playing for the low low price of free.

I mean, I've said before, Vengeance wasn't a bad game. It was just a bad TRIBES game. And, even if it can't reach the heights of TRIBES, I still want a TRIBES game.

I got a chance to see it played live at PAX and it was looking solid. To be fair, $30 is a lot for a free game that doesn't have a release date, but Tribes 2 was the last time I was really part of a clan (Team Peanuts FTW) and would really like to see that game do awesome.

I'm probably not going to put much money into this. I really don't care if some people have VIP and I don't. I will enjoy it casually as long as it is more-or-less Tribes style FPS. Even a rough ("modernized" if we're generous?) approximation of Tribes is miles better than another brown'n'gritty war simulation.

You really can't complain with cash shop games unless they do pay2win, which I haven't seen any evidence of here.

The VIP controversial isn't a pay2win thing, its a segregation of the playerbase with VIP only servers/maps. Which made a lot of people mad.

I'm not sure if I care, personally. I was just saying there apparently was a "thing" with it. If someone pays and wants to play on servers that are segregated, I don't care. I guess I would care if they were holding off maps for those players only, but at the same time, they paid...so....good for them?

So much of it all is still a wait-to-see sort of thing, so I don't feel like anything is worth getting worked up over right now.

Nostalgia is going to be a big enemy of this game.

Things like the energy burn rate and health regen will really make any sort of Tribes vet be worried, but I'm really going to just hold back any sort of judgement until I've had enough my hands on the game long enough to get past the desire to just have Tribes 1 in new fancy graphics and judge it on its own merits.

Their VIP model is kinda shitty only because of the exclusive server bit. The rest of it is basically the same thing World of Tanks does and that is a damn good model to be following for a F2P game. I wouldn't be surprised if Hi-Rez backs off on the server/map thing eventually.

The whole repair your teammate/bring a repair pack for yourself/kill people fast enough to be able to grab a health kit from their dead corpse dynamic completely disappears with regenerating health, and it makes hiding out the opponent's base and blowing stuff up much less of an adventure.
