It's...well to be blunt, even more half-assed and terrible than the usual RPG romance. I said all of two romantic lines in the game and now I'm back at my house and...oh, hi Merril. I guess we're in love now? Sure. Sure why not.
Related: All of Hawke's romantic lines come across as insanely creepy. The VA just cannot work it at all.
Oh well. At least I got A) An achievement and Merril has sweet new armor.
It might just be the personality clash between a man in (at least) his thirties and an elf with the mentality of a 14-year-old.
Yep. To be fair I didn't go in expecting anything less than an Aerie/Liara/Tali-esque creepfest.

Isabella! Why did you do me so wrong? I lurved youuuuuu!! Also, is there a way to keep your mom from dying? I killed the guy with the funny name before, if I had let him live could I have saved my mom?
Anyway, things are going well. Oh and to who ever it was that told me to bring Isabella for The Long Road... totally totally right. That was hilarious.
No. I let the guy live and she still died. That quest was really well done. Made me go .
Did you get the Aveline talk in the office where she talks about her Dad afterward? OMG I seriously almost balled when she started talking about him on his deathbed.
So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.
And yes I just used that as an excuse to show off again.
In any case, pretty much all BioWare romances are creepy and awkward. As much as I enjoy their games, it's wise never to expect much from that aspect of them.

Yeah. It's rare that a game actually evokes any real emotion, but that whole quest and it's aftermath got me. I especially liked the way it was spread out over 2 acts. It didn't feel rushed at all.
According to PA anyone who isn't cheery all the time or cracking jokes in a whiny bitch.
Anyways is there any way to get the loading screens as my desktop? These things are amazing.
No...according to us...any who whines all the time is a whiny bitch.
To be honest, though, I think in general PA exaggerates character traits a bit. We definitely like our memes, too, more than reasonable discussion. We can't have anyone say Ashley Williams isn't a nazi! It doesn't help that she was probably the more believable character in the game and you can sway her opinions. She's a nazi! And batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians, batarians.
As far as Anders being whiny? I think he's just passionate about wanting to free mages, not necessarily whiny. Instead of moping he actually tries to do something about it. If he was just sitting on his ass and complaining all day, then I'd call him whiny. Fenris, though? Yeah, I'd be okay if he'd stop brooding and muttering about how evil mages are every now and again. Every scene I've had with him has him do that.
And speaking of Fenris vs. Aveline for your warrior spot, I'd definitely recommend the latter. She has a ton of unique scenes and dialog for quests because of her position in the guard.

On topic: This has probably been asked before, but how many acts are there? And I take it each act equals one year? I'm still at act one, and there's a bunch of things to do. I feel like this game is going to be quite lengthy!

I am enjoying Isabella and Aveline conversations, but Varric is too amazing to leave at home. Fenris and Merrill just didn't do it for me, they don't seem to every add anything insightful or intertesting so I leave them back.

I was with you until you said something about Batarians not being horrible...
Thinking of doing an Insanity run (or maybe just hard, how difficult is it?) with me as a Rogue, Isabella off tank rogue, Aveline and then some mage for mostly damage. I figure if I can kill everything fast enough I won't need heals. Also assasin looks insanely overpowered with all the damage buffs.
I was with you until you said something about Batarians not being horrible...
Oh I never said they weren't horrible, I was merely commenting on the fact that you can't go a page or two without someone bringing up batarians.
On to Isabella, I'm also displeased with her look. Does she have breasts or bowling balls? And I was hoping with the time jumps that she'd put on some pants, but four years later and she's wearing the same thing. I wish game developers would stop appeasing testosterone filled teenagers with lewd visual designs.

Varric gets on my nerves for the random shit he disagrees with, and being forced to bring him to the Deep Roads. At least he's got better sense than sarcastic Hawke and won't (always) whip out stupid one-liners in situations where they don't fit at all.
But I've formed my party based on how I want to fight, so I've ended up with Fenris, Anders, Varric, and tank Hawke. Melee rogues are bleh x1000, and Merril's unique ability tree is meh x1000, so that's 2 characters out, and I keep Varric around so that I can unlock stuff.
I'll probably replay as a pewpewpew Hawke and let Isabela in once I've built her so that she just stays out of the way and I'll just pump her cunning way up so that I can get decent stats on my rogue.
Coming up on this for my second playthrough and I was just wondering when the Sibling stuff goes down.
If I take in Bethany, Anders, and Varric, and then console out Bethany and Anders for useful people, and console them back in after the boss should that be okay?

Right after the
Rock Wraith fight, when Varric says it's going to take a week to get back up to the surface. So basically, put them in after the boss fight.
One thing that is different in DA2 are groups spawning during a fight. I kind of like it though. Sure, it can be annoying, but it makes sense that you can be ambushed.
What are people smoking about Merrill's personal tree being meh?
Except for a single ability, she is insanely awesome against swarms.
Damage to everything around her + healing based on how many guys are around her.
She may not excel in 1-on-1 scenarios, but against a group of guys, she just tears shit up.
I don't know how it is on normal, but on hard and above, swarms don't really mean anything. They're either cannon fodder that ANY of your characters could take down instantly, or tanks that distract you from a real threat. I'd take a mage that can shut down a single, dangerous target, and heal and buff, over one that can do what all my other characters already do. Plus, the only really challenging encounters are against large single target bosses who are immune to all forms of cc except aggro, and the last thing I want my mage to be doing in that situation is drawing aggro.
I've got Anders specced for total heals and buffs. He's got 1 (2 now, since I had an extra point) damage skill, which is a single target debuff. Everything else he does is either haste or healing, or decent ranged dps with his staff, and the game is so easy on hard I'm considering nightmare.

But...you want cunning on a rogue. You can get to the point where you're critting with every hit and that's where high cunning really comes in handy (especially with the assassin talent that makes each point of cunning count for 2% critical damage).

Naw...even on normal her spec tree is meh.
Like you said, anyone can take out swarms if specs right.
She's like half-Blood mage/half-Keeper...without the better spells from either.
The main thing she has going for her is since she's a blood mage, you can ignore willpower in favor of constitution.
Melee rogues, by looking at the numbers, are by far the most single target DPS in the game.
Basically get the 100 percent crit chance for 10 (then 20) seconds and combine that with the cunning into crit damage and you have insane fucking damage.
How far into the story do I get Isabela? I'm pretty deep into the Darkpowder plot and I still don't have her.
You have to get Anders first ("Tranquility"). Then she'll be in the Hanged Man.
I don't believe she'll have a quest show up in the journal pointing you to her, either. You just stop in the Hanged Man and there she is.
Also, make sure you talk to her the first time you see her in there, or I'm pretty sure she'll be gone.
Oh what the fuck, are you guys serious? She's a missable character? I'm like balls deep in Act 2 now. I've had Anders for a long time.
I never even saw her in the Hanged Man.
You enter the Hanged Man in Act 1, after completing Tranquility, and there is a full cutscene. Not sure how you could not see it.
Never got a cutscene in the Hanged Man after Tranquility. Believe me. If I had a cutscene with Isabela in it, I woulda know. She's the one party member I've wanted the whole fucking game. God damnit this makes me want to just fucking quit. Argh.

Your non-stop brooding and your mage hating ways is why your ass is on the sideline and Aveline takes the warrior slot.
A shame too because apparently 2H warriors are stagger causing machines.
2H warrior + mage is just such a synergistic relationship.

2) Aveline
3) Fenris
4) Isabela
5) Carver
6) Sebastian

8) Anders/Merrill
9) Merrill/Anders
Those last two tend to go back and forth, and the first three are all really close.

6) Carver
7) Sebastian
8) Anders/Merrill
I put them both in 8 because they're pretty interchangabel.
