I thought the fatalities and x-ray moves look way more original than the stuff from the good 'ol days, though perhaps not quite the ever-awesome MKII.

Ya I'm happy with the originality of the new one. Honestly it's pretty impressive how after all these years they come up with all these new ways to violently kill someone.

Cripes, the Kabal x-ray where he breaks your fucking knees inside out caused a sharp intake of breath.

Then he shreds the back of your ribs. I think it's the most destructive x-ray move we've seen yet.

    I like Kano's x-ray personally.
He puts a knife through each one of the other guy's femurs, then a boot to the skull.

One thing I noticed when watching all these videos and playing the demo for a few hours is...everyone plays exceptionally similar to each other. It's concerning, but it may just make the game more balanced!

Well remember, in its heyday, this was never a series where the characters were greatly differentiated from one another except by virtue of special moves. The series' accessibility was based on the idea that you had a pretty good idea what to expect from any given fighter; thus, exploiting said special moves became the extent of its depth.

Street Fighter this'll never be, and I'm okay with that.

and exploiting the specials is probably even moreso the case now by spending meter for improved versions.

probably gonna be tough to save for an xray between improved specials and combo breakers, unless your character's improved specials somehow aren't worth it

Agree completely here, she's faster, she can't guarantee an xray unlike cap'n's spear and freeze... relies more on mixups

Wasn't there a rumor that each character had like three or four fatalities? That may be why they're showing off similar ones now: save the unique ones for when the game comes out.

Keep in mind there's likely a huge number of "rip/knock off the head" fatalities as well.

And for that matter, how many fatalities have we seen rip the torso off of the legs?

Geez MK people, be more creative in your needlessly brutal desecrations of corpses.

Going to MK2, which is the best MK game that I think we can agree on, there's a LOT of repetition.

Decaptations: Baraka, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Kung Lao, Reptile
Torso Rips: Johnny Cage, Lui Kang, Reptile, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero (also an explosion)
Explosions: Kitana, Raiden (X2), Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero (also a torso rip)

There's minor variations in each of these, but they're all very similar. Out of 25 fatalities, only about 8 are really that unique, and that includes a few lame ones (like Lui Kang's somersault uppercut, or mileena's stabby stabby)

I suppose it could be worse when everyone has multiple fatalities.

3 vaguely similar ones out of a lot isn't too bad

And those three are only similar in that they involve people getting ripped in half, starting from the crotch.

The ways that they get ripped in half are completely different, which is whats important. Decapitation is another one to be expected every so often, but its all about the technique involved. These guys are artists of human mutilation, and should be thought of as such. They are more then just mere kombatants, like you would see in those other games!

If 3D artists are going to spend the time to create "ripped in half" models for all of the kombatants, you better believe they're going to use those a few times.

Gametrailers has the third part of Fatality Friday up. It's Trilogy.

Some of those fatalities are super lazy; so many decapitating uppercuts. Some of them suffer from poor animations. Baraka's animality is like some MS Paint clipart reject. But there are some neat ones, like Reptile's fatalities. It'll be interesting to see how many of these get a glorious HD upgrade in the new game.

Also, Sheeva is performing some heroic brutality shit there.

Also, they did raiden, but not classic Jax or Kano. Weird.

They showed both of Kung Lao's fatalities. Can't blame you for blanking out on them, one of them is a boring whirly thing and the other one shows off the "hands floating in the air after torso is cut" graphical feature.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say.
Raiden's name was spelled as is in all of the original arcade games, and in every console game released since Mortal Kombat 4. The console ports released up until Mortal Kombat 4, along with both movies and the comic book series, changed the name to "Rayden". According to Ed Boon, he spelled it that way to avoid confusion with the Fatal Fury character Raiden.

I was always a little sour on Sektor's flame fatality (and Cyrax's net) because Scorpion was my favourite character and it was pretty obvious that for whatever reason (the Bloodstorm thing?) they were trying to replace him with these robots. Cool as they were, my ninja code name as a child sure as hell wasn't Sektor or Cyrax.

They all had pieces of Scorpion. Cyrax and Smoke with the "get over here" move, Sektor and Smoke with teleport punch, and then Sektor's flamethrower fatality.

Also, seeing how Smoke was a faster, stronger Scorpion in MK2, it makes sense that he'd be the most reminiscent of him.

Living in Australia I will never be able to enjoy this fabled game of violence and spectacle.

They've banned it outright and have issued an import ban on it entering the country at customs. So if you import it you'll face a big ass fine for you and the importer you use.

So, played the demo at a friend's house tonight. Two thing: 1) I've become completely desensitized to violence in the media, the fatalities were pretty cool, but they definitely don't bring the same feeling of awe and amazement as they used to when I was a little kid despite the far superior graphics engine and 2) this game is going to be fucking awesome.
