One thing ive noticed in the streams and videos is that players positions are not always reset in between rounds, it seems to happen if both characters are close to an edge. Have Netherrealm stated if this is intended or is it a bug?

Prob a bug... or rather just a clumsy aspect.

Mortal Kombat looks great, but it does seem to have that typical Mortal Kombat clumsiness about it.

I think it speaks well of my enthusiasm for this game that I haven't clicked a single spoiler in the last twelve or so pages. Maybe there should be a thread for spoilers in general or something?

General question. I'm pushing myself through Expert with Mileena, which means mostly getting juggled and smashed, in an effort to adapt into blocking and becoming a more nimble player. I've begun to appreciate the multiple freeze moves Sub-Zero has, at least from being on the receiving end of them-ah, he's doing a freeze, but which freeze move is he going to use? Shi- sort of feeling.

How does one do the combo breaker move? I don't think it's actually listed, or I'm being ridiculous.

Also I want opinions on the rollerball move Mileena has. It seems more like a move for when your opponent is trying to fall back or is literally falling on their ass already, than a direct tactic. How do you guys prefer to use it? Most of the time the only thing it gets me is an uppercut to the face, and I suspect that's likely gonna be the norm with a human player.

But no, there doesn't need to be a thread for spoilers...

It will have a good story for a fighting game... but story centric games don't even have their own threads.

Is there a possibility we could get some info in the OP concerning friends lists for the 360 and PS3? Would love to participate in some PA tournaments.

Anyone care to explain why Sub Zero became 'The Hero' of Mortal Kombat?

Cause, he's always getting his ass kicked by Scorpion....and everyone else.

Only the first sub-zero got his ass kicked by scorpion. Aka older brother sub-zero. Scorpion killed him in MK1. From MK2 onward, sub-zero is the younger brother, who originally was looking to avenge his brother's death. However, scorpion has no beef with this younger sub-zero, and at the end of MK2, Scorpion pledged to become Sub-Zero's protector at all costs to repay wrongly killing his brother.

So after MK2 onwards, scorpion is sub-zero's ally. Scorpion enters UMK3 as a badguy, then midway through his allegiance with sub-zero forces him to become a good guy.

This was all in the original trilogy btw. Stuff may or may not be the same anymore.

I have been saying this for a few days now. OP is over a month old. Need to update with new info/videos to maybe get people's interest so that we can get more inquiring about a league/tournament.

I would say use it when the opponent is a ways away, but still in striking distance. I am pretty sure I have used the ball to go under Sub-Zero's freeze and Scorpion's spear and hit them. Use it on an opponent who likes to throw out random punches and kicks and specials. Also use it to punish blocked moves/combos since you can get an OK combo off of it.

According to the wiki, Cyber Sub-Zero is the younger brother of Sub-Zero. So maybe older brother Sub-Zero is not going to be turned into Noob Saibot? Then...Noob Saibot would'nt need to be around cause older Sub-Zero wouldn't be dead.

Ah fuck it! Why am I trying to make sense of a MK storyline....
Older Sub-Zero indeed becomes noob saibot, and younger is forever cyber sub-zero from now on.

There's a climactic battle near the end between Cyber Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot where CSZ explains that they are both "flawed copies of the original sub-zero"

Technically, from a story perspective, smoke would have likely become the hero sub-zero was going to become, had things not changed beyond that.

So I just went ahead and spoiled myself on the entire story.
So, it seems all the "good" guys except Sonya, Johnny and Raiden are all dead. Quan Chi may be in control of them, so who knows if we're going to see them? The majority of the "bad" guys are still alive though, so in the next installment we'll probably see them join forces with the last surviving three to stop the Netherealm's invasion.

I thought it was a pretty good mode, the transitions into fights was way cooler and smoother than MK vs DC's own story mode. I also liked how Cyber Sub Zero was the good cyborg, although he's sadly dead. I noticed they built up Cyrax's story and just kind of left him hanging, so that obviously must mean he has to have some sort of whole new plotline in the next game. At least I hope so.
Cyber Sub-Zero's story in this game is the exact same as Cyber Smoke's story, right down to the reprogramming.

Cyrax, in the original trilogy, got similarly reprogrammed, by sub-zero and cyber smoke, and joined their forces, and this played a major part in later games, so he'll more than likely be turned in the sequel.

There are actually a ton of story segments left for the sequel which, if you followed the old stories, may change dramatically. Notice how scorpion is still under quan chi's control? Notice how older sub-zero, before scorpion killed him, said "that is not me!" when quan chi was showing scorpion sub-zero murdering his clan? That's a major, major plot point in MK4.

Smoke was one of the most popular MK characters after MK2, and they had no qualms about making him a cyborg for the rest of the series.

Besides, even after smoke was turned into a cyborg, for years after they'd throw in human smoke as a non-story easter egg, so they'll undoubtedly do the same for sub-zero.

And, much further down the road, Tundra joins the cast, who is bascially girl sub-zero. I could see her becoming the new sub-zero maybe.

something that no one seems to bring up when talking about story mode is how completely and utterly fantastic the voice acting is. This is god tier voice acting, every character sounds awesome, especially MK2 sub-zero. His voice sounds NOTHING like what I'd ever expect it to sound like, but it winds up fitting him so, so, SO well.
Shame he speaks like that for only a short time before that incredible voice will never be heard again.

The way he says "Cyrax?! I'm sorry for what they've done to you... but I cannot comply" is awesome. He has a sense of sophistication, the kind that completely befits a legendary ninja.

No one can't return. Everyone will return eventually. No one popular stays dead in a fighting game story or not. Noob Saibot is probably popular enough to be back relatively quickly, though maybe not in the next installment.

Regarding your previous post, I could see a human Sub-Zero in there as a bonus like they did with human Smoke. That would make a lot of sense since it sounds like they're basically changing roles. But I'm sure there will be a human Sub-Zero of some sort regardless of story considerations for the same reasons as above.

Also, fyi girl sub-zero is Frost not Tundra. I think Tundra was younger Sub-Zero's real code name before he took on his older brother's. Unless that stuff was changed.

Noob Saibot can't return for story reasons. His soul is literally no more. He doesn't exist anymore. He's not even dead to come back.

Besides, this is such a story-based series now, I could see them keeping some people away for good.
I doubt shao kahn will ever come back, for example, since that was the entire point of the game. Whenever you killed him conventionally, he kept coming back again and again. It wasn't until they finally let him incur the elder god's wrath that he should be finally dead for good

speaking of the story, MK has always been dark, but god damn. God damn.

Also I fought Klassic SMoke today too, I didn't figure it out but I did do it

EDIT: LOL just after you post that picture. Its down + back/select when you see him there.

really? That's weird, because if that's how you access him, it's different from the old games. In the old games, you had to see him pop out of the trees in the living forest, then you had to get to the portal stage, without losing a single match between the living forest and the portal, and then you had to uppercut someone, and when Dan Fordan would yell toasty, you held down and block to fight smoke.

Ehh, my whole point was story doesn't matter for deciding who will and who won't be in a fighting game.
I can see that they probably want to try a lot of new cast in the up coming few, but everyone will be back eventually. Noob Saibot will be back. It could be a new ninja that's basically him again aka not elder Sub-Zero but a new demon ... wraith ... thing (whatever he is), but the character will be back.
I'm really glad they did a cool story mode to go through, and I plan to enjoy it. But I've been playing fighting games long enough to know how little it really matters. I honestly can't comprehend someone who thinks any character death is really final.

mortal kombat isn't just a fighting game, though. It's a franchise, and it has been right from the beginning. And they're playing closer attention to the story now than ever before. Everyone in the new MK, every single character and their costumes, have story reasons for being in this game.

    The four secret battles are
    Reptile
    Noob
    Smoke
    Jade

Supposedly if you find and defeat all of them, that unlocks the Klassic Kostumes for the ninja characters (ladies too). Don't know how true that is... if someone manages to do it, maybe post for us?

I don't know how to do the Noob or Jade ones. and afaik the Klassic Kostumes thing is all theory only cause Boon said they are in the game somewhere.

I'm willing to bet there's a 5th hidden fight in MK.

They included all the hidden fights from MK1 and MK2. Is everyone forgetting the hidden fight in MK3? I mean, that character model is all over the game, too.

Of course it will remain right, they will come up with reasons to bring people back. I was never suggesting the next game will go "oh buy the way this stuff never happened." Well actually this game is sort of that for the previous four but whatever. They will kill people off and bring them back as they have done before. Hell it's the reason we have two Sub-Zero's in the first place. People come back.

You know what, I'm going to continue to insist your wrong no matter how long this discussion goes on. So this will be my last post on it. We'll just have to wait for the sequels to see who is right.

That was MK Trilogy. Which was a console-only MK game.

Good. That's way better than having to do specific things to get stuff. Neither the challenge tower nor the story mode are very interesting to me, so the less I have to play them, the better.
