You know what I love seeing as Nocturne? An enemy champs with 4 total bars of health at lvl 1. Because I know I will make them my bitch for the entire game.
If you want to counter Nocturne, get a doran's shield. Maybe a cloth armor and a red crystal as well. Problem solved.
Or hell just get a giant's belt pretty early.
Any of those will cockblock his early game against that character and prevent full health tower dives.
Does it slow down your mad deeps? Uh...yeah, but you can't deep if your dead.
Hey Delph, how's your build going for Jax, any changes? I gave it a shot in an AI game, but it felt a little off. I think it was the building into a lichbane when I used to the ridiculous speed of stirkes with a rageblade.
Yeah the focus with that build is definitely the burst, forgoing the Rageblade will feel weird because you won't be attacking nearly as fast, but the build is less about your autoattacks and more about using empower to great effect repeatedly. With this build I do a lot of dancing in and out of combat. I have not had a chance to try it in a normal game yet but I liked the results in the Coop vs Ai game I had. I wouldn't worry about building the lichbane until later on, get the sheen early then get a Rylai's (starting with giant's belt) next. Once you have those two i would grab a vampiric scepter and then start building your other stuff.
I have a friend who will be starting the game fresh in the next day or two, I was going to play with him on a smurf account to kind of walk him through things so I may not have a chance to play in a normal game. Once I do though I'll let you know how it worked for me.

OK, I'll try doing my build order differently and give it another shot in a bot game.
Could've not taken a solo lane. Could've banned Noc at champ select. Could've taken a less squishy champ.
Come on with this stuff. If those are your options for dealing with Nocturne, isn't it pretty obvious that there is a problem here which needs to be addressed?
Could've run more defensive runes & masteries.
And this resolves the problem how? The effect of doing this isn't going to be enough to save you.
Could've warded more effectively.
Nocturne is basically immune to warding post-6, which is one of the reasons he's so strong.
Could've dominated your lane more thoroughly.
Then all else wouldn't be equal, would it? The point is that with all summoners playing at the same level, Nocturne is stronger than other champions. Obviously if you outplay the other team by a wide enough margin it doesn't matter how overpowered a champion is, this will always be true, but it's not really a valid argument here IMO.
Could've ganked their jungler more effectively at level 1.
From what I've seen Nocturne is actually quite versatile in terms of the routes he can take and still jungle quickly. Correct me if I'm wrong.
You know this stuff. You're probably a better player than I am. Not sure why Nocturne has you so bent out of shape.
I have a problem with "super abilities" like Nocturne's or Shen's ultimates, any long-duration stealth ability, etc. I want Riot to stop putting them in the game because they are too hard to balance and the amount of attention they require feels far too drastic and out of sync with the rest of the game. Basically they feel like they belong in DotA, not LoL. If I wanted that kind of game design... I'd go play DotA.

Fine, whatever. I honestly don't care. Just trying to be a voice of reason.
There is no voice of reason when a new champ is released. Wait a few weeks. People will have learned to deal with him or he will be toned down. Same old same old. Happens every time a new champ is released. It is rare for the community to consider a new champ balanced right out the gate.
As someone who plays Nocturne I have already noticed that people are figuring out how to deal with his ult. He is going through the standard "OMG I can't deal with this new champ" syndrome. Same thing happened when I played Maokai, I could steamroll people who didn't know how to deal with him. Those same tactics don't work for maokai as much anymore (luckily he is strong all around so it doesn't really matter)
Three things you need to realize about Nocturne.
1) His ult is on a very long cooldown early on, he is only going to use it when he can guarantee a kill. Use bushes, flashes behind walls, or other methods to obscure yourself from his sight in order to avoid it. Not as easy to do if you are in mid, but the sidelanes have bushes that are readily available.
2) He needs to build a lot of offensive items to carry him into late game. Because of this he is very very squishy. Focus him down as quickly as you can, and try to lead your attacks with something that will pop his shield before you go for the CC moves.
3) Teamfight. Stay in a group to neutralize his Ult. He won't jump in on a group of 5 because it will almost certainly mean his death.
He will be trying to find people off my themselves in order to force 1v1 fights. If you have good burst you can probably take him (Poppy, etc). Just be sure to time your CC after he has blown his shield. He will assume the first thing you try to do is CC him.

how often is a champ balanced right out the gate? not usually. though lately they have tended to be UP, which is why nocturne is such a thorn in people's sides because he is at worst a very strong champion

Pretty much. And in two weeks we'll all be bitching about whatever the new champ does that pisses us off, or how weak they are.

I wonder what would happen if they changed a couple of Eve's abilities to make her viable without stealth?
Delph, tried it again with your build order, still not feeling it. Seems like a late blooming build, especially if the real people attempt smarter zoning than the bots. I just don't think it fits my style of play. I could probably be doing it all wrong though.

You're right, Nocturnes ult is just like Eve's ability to stealth for 30 seconds at a time on command and stun people out of stealth. He can also use his ult to escape people just like Eve because it is on a short cooldown.
Oh wait.
*Edit* @Uber Are you laning or jungling with him? In the lane I would use it to repeatedly jump on the squishiest of the two people and constantly keep them afraid and low.
Certain team makeups are going to be difficult though. The Bullshit Warwick/Chogath combo they keep sending me against (or WW/Shen) is one example.
My playstyle consists a lot of using empower/leap then running away and going back to last hitting. IT is good harass without much retribution. If they are using a champ with a good stun like Taric or Sion you are going to have more difficulty. Try starting with boots to help avoid skillshot roots etc.
I tend to hang out in bushes a lot and punish the enemy with this type of build. I may not get the kill but I will force them back many times (I have used similar builds to this on Jax in the past)
Pre-6 you're not going to want to be in a stand up 1v1 fight. just burst and run, burst and run.

Warwick is sort of hilarious when Noc uses his ult. If you're standing near him when he uses it you can grab him and keep him from flying away. If he doesn't jump on someone right away anyway. Then your team can wail on him and kill him before he gets anyone. I've done this a few times.
I wonder if they're ever going to do like they said in beta and make a "season 2" where they phase out availability of champions for a new batch. Seems like a waste of resources but at the same time I have literally 60 champions available right now and that's still missing like 12 or so. Releasing a new one roughly every 3 weeks.. I mean.. really, at a certain point it just gets dumb.
Plus I can't even imagine a straight new player trying to get into the game with so many champions. Part of being decent is knowing who does what and how to play against them. Imagine jumping in new with 100+ fucking heroes to try to deal with.
What I'm saying is that Eve forces super passive play in a lane because she can show up instantly at any time with a CC and is immune to bush wards, only she can actually be countered with pink wards.

Oh, and he deals a lot more damage, has an easier time catching mans, and has a built in banshee's veil. He does the same thing that Evelynn does in terms of how he affects the game, only he's better at it.

Our bot game had a Nunu and Cho in my lane, Taric and MFer were up top, and annie mid. Couldn't burn annie down before she unleashed the stun combo and almost or succeed in killing me. I was able to stand in MF's ult for almost the full duration. I went sheen/tabi/rylai's/aegis/cutlass before the game ended.

2) He needs to build a lot of offensive items to carry him into late game. Because of this he is very very squishy. Focus him down as quickly as you can, and try to lead your attacks with something that will pop his shield before you go for the CC moves.
I agree with your post in general, but not this part. I really think you should try out a tanky Nocturne build before saying that he's weaker in 5v5 fights. His ability to blind the whole team while jumping on and CCing a carry is extremely powerful, and his steroids give him enough damage to kill squishies on their own. His damage is more than comparable to a tanky-built Xin or Renekton, and his long-range jump, CC, spellshield, and movement abilities make him much more difficult to kite than either of those champs.
Focusing down a tanky built Nocturne is a good way to lose. Unfortunately, not focusing down a tanky built Nocturne is also a good way to lose. The 'right' answer is to slow and CC him so your carry can kite, but that's harder than you'd think with a built-in spellshield stacked on a BV or QSS.
Edit: I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with super abilities though. I mean, both the champs Orem mentions (Shen and Nocturne) could easily be tweaked into balance with small changes to their non-ultimates abilities. Interesting and unique abilities are good for the game.

When going for a tanky build with him what items do you get to boost his damage? Do you build him for lifesteal or for straight mitigation and health?
I'm still toying with different builds.

I think phasing out champion availability would make a lot of people quit...or rage at least. Between RP and IP I think everyone would have a reason to be pissed.
IMO I think that would only work is every champ was free always.

Yeah it was something they mentioned a long time ago with the whole "seasons" thing. I think the intent was everything was always fair game in normals but in ranked champions might see seasonal rotation. (I think in part to cut down staleness in the metagame.) It might have been completely scrapped at some point though, I was just reminded of it because I was sitting there staring at a bunch of champions wondering what the fuck I felt like playing.

It depends on the game - Wriggles is obviously important if you're jungling, but which defensive items you get tend to be enemy-team dependent. QSS and FoN are both solid choices against magic damage teams, QSS if you're eating a lot of CC. BV is also good, but I like it a little less with the 45s change on the spell shield. Against more physical-heavy teams I like to go Frozen Malette + Atmas for even better chasing with decent armor and sustained damage.
It's probably worth getting Aegis on him if no one else does (that item is simply too good not to get), but I don't think he's the best person to carry it.
I honestly have no idea if that's optimal, but its been working for me.

Ok so you go more for the mitigation/health route. I haven't really tried that I'll give it a shot and see how it works.

Time to MISS MY GRABS
LIKE A BASS
And by that I mean the fish.
Because . . . Fish don't have opposable thumbs.
Or hands.
And that means they can't, uh.
YEAH
8-)
tldr: wtb magma chamber instead of champions.

I haven't really tried that I'll give it a shot and see how it works.
re: Aegis. I actually love getting it on him. Such a great item overall.

Because he came out last week?
i can't play worth crap. basically sit behind minions, then do mediocre damage when i actually hit.
Should be next week I think. Isn't it two weeks after they come out?

It's always been the week after, hasn't it?
