You can pick him up very very first thing in Act 2.
Which is annoying. I paid 7 bucks for the dude, I should be able to use him in Act 1.
damn im at like 14 hours in and i still haven't got enough money for the trip, im like 10 gold out yet the quests keep on coming, done quite alot thought..
is it worth exploring sundermount and the wounded coast early or just waiting until i get a quest to those parts? i notice theres still alot of unexplored areas when i went to these places last but i keep getting quests to come back..

I would say just do your quests the first time you go to one of the major outdoor area maps (Sundermount, Wounded Coast) and then the second time you go back for new quests that pop up explore every little nook and cranny.
The smaller outdoor places you should fully explore on your first trip, you may not get a chance to return or may have the option, but no more quests there so it could just be a lengthy trip for small returns.
How are people getting over 40 hours? I did nearly every quest I could find and I came in at 25 hour or so.
By going slowly and not rushing? I finished at 34 hours and didn't feel like I was going particularly slow, but certainly wasn't rushing at all.
I didn't Rush really, I took my time, the only quests I skipped were companion quests for people I didn't use, as I wanted to save those for the 2nd play through. I never skipped dialogue or anything either, played on Hard. I am just amazed some people nearly doubled my time, I feel like I missed out on something.

I like to redo scenes a few times to try out the other options, and on Nightmare some battles take a few tries, so that added a lot of time for me.

You'll get a quest for it to talk to them.

Trying to think of a good party for a second playthrough.
I hardly ever used Merrill, so she's probably a shoo-in. So is Isabella.
Merill, Isabella, Rogue-Hawke, and Fenris is okay I guess. I might miss having a real tank, though.
Fenris, or a 2h warrior Hawke for that matter, can be an awesome tank, just as long as you put some points to keeping him alive. The sheer damage a 2h warrior can do is often more than enough to keep mobs on him, just need to either get some defender abilties (I personally swear by Stonewall) or spec Merill and/or one of your rogues with protection buffs or crowd-control.

23 maybe?
Hm, you might have missed a few things then. I was 27, but one of those levels was from the potion, so 26 and I don't even think I got everything. Probably didn't miss enough to make a huge difference in the playtime, though. :P
I was straight level 20 when I beat the game the first time. I just wanted to see the ending. Now, after I beat Origins, I'll do a complete sweep of DA2, and be sure to have plenty of saves around to enjoy the future DLC with... assuming there is some.
How has this game been selling? I know there's the Metacritic dumbness going on, so I hope that doesn't have any negative effect because this is definitely my favorite Bioware game.
Isabela makes for a good Defense tank, too as does a Duelist Hawke.
That has not been my experince... at least on Hard, when everything has enough force to thier attacks to make anyone who isn't a warrior or Force Mage flinch, stoping attacks, abilities, potion drinks, running away... real frustrating if you are just jumping to a person to do an order, because flinching aparently clears whatever order you just gave them.
Worst part is that it is possible on some talents and spells to start it, flinch, and not only loss the stamina/mana cost, but have the ability now on cooldown as well...
Although, I'm just now starting a Duelist Rogue Hawke Playthrough, maybe she will do better than Isabela, since Isabela lacks the talents to consitently hit the 80% Defence cap against the enemy she taunted that a Duelist can....

I know I missed a lot of the secret sidequest my first playthrough. I was still level 27...but I cheated.

The Metacritic dumbness is really weird. I have never seen a game with such a huge disparity between critic scores and user scores. How would people that didn't know anything about the game take that, anyway?
The amount of hatred and vitriol directed at the game is just fucking bizarre.

Probably won't know until the end of the month, but it's at the top of the charts in the UK so I think it'll have done decently here too.

Well, the only numbers I've seen where the latest UK sales chart. Straight to number 1 in the all formats charts, so it's looking good so far. Seems to me as if the initial hate is dying out a bit now, at least on saner forums, that people actually play the game and realise that it actually is pretty good.
I don't get the hate. We've only had a couple people in this thread dislike the game overall. Lots of criticism, but criticism =/= disliking the game.
A lot of other forums are almost invested in hating the game at this point, you post a positive opinion and you get jumped on until you go away so it gives the impression everyone hates it. This is the only forum I usually go to I can even discuss the game without an insane amount of crazy.
Damn, I've missed around 70 pages of the DA thread now
Anyway, I need some advice on the Isabela romance:
So I've just finished her companion quest in Act 3 and did the talk in the Hanged Man afterwards where she's all "I'm falling for you!" *smooch smooch* etc.
However, I've also found her gift in Act 3, the Rivaini fertility talisman, and when I give her that and she mentions it's also a sign of love, the only responses I can give her are decidedly "anti-love"..even the one marked with a heart, indicating a romance option ("I only want lust" or something like that).
I've reloaded an earlier save and decided to hold off on giving her the talisman for now..anyone know if giving her the gift will screw up the romance somehow?
Well, to be frank, there are a couple people in the DA2 threads here that have been borderline white knighting the game's (well more often EA's) bad decisions to the point of silly as well. Mentioning names or going into it more than that is begging for an internet fight, so I'll just say I've seen it on both sides, really bad in some cases, and leave it at that.
Metacritic thing is stupid though, as I'm pretty sure a lot of those didn't bother playing the game at all. Not that I'm against writing comments that explain their issues with the game there, but actually downvoting the score is dishonest, since that's reserved for the gameplay itself.

It looks like its only an issue if you romance her. At least thats what some people on the official forums and wiki are claiming.
If so, a lot more people romanced her than I thought.
I romanced her my first playthrough and didn't have any problems at all. So I don't know what's up with that.

It should be noted, however, that I romanced Isabella first so perhaps the bug has to do with an early game romance?

Weird, I slept with Isabela first and still got hit with the bug.

Okay. Those bugs explain SO much.
