I tend to enjoy the videos from Gametrailers, although I really dislike Geoff Keighley.
As much as I hate Kotaku, I do really like Stephen Totilo, as he's one of the few journalists that seem to take what he does seriously, plus he seems like a really decent guy. Why he took a job with Kotaku is beyond me though.
He did it for the chicks.
Actually, Nintendo dropped off 3DSes to several big-name game journalists that way. Yeah, that's over-the-top and baffling. Then again, Nintendo has been using outfits with portable game systems chained to them ever since the GBA was revealed at E3 2001.
I tend to enjoy the videos from Gametrailers, although I really dislike Geoff Keighley.
Yeah, I'm not completely a fan of his either (he's definitely the poster face of what most people hate about gaming journalism), but I do recommend watching the "Bonus Round" roundtables on Gametrailers hosted by him as it offers the opinions on different aspects of the industry as shared by the three panelists that show up.

Gaming journalism is bad if you only follow shitty sites and magazines.
What are some good ones? I like Giant Bomb, mostly for the podcast, and I like No High Scores, but I'm looking for more. I like Gamasutra's features too, but don't generally read their news or reviews. I'm not big on reviews at all, really, I tend to go with the forum's opinion on most games and I'm rarely disappointed. But I like long, well thought-out and well-written features rather than short blurbs or previews.
Gamasutra and Next Gen tend to have interesting features and developer articles.
If you stick to their monthly 'issues', then Escapist has some good stuff, and their Extra Credit video series is always great.
You got the best ones. GB doesn't write a lot, but their video content is pretty good, and they rarely show bias on their Quick Looks (even if their gaming skills leave much to be desired).
Like mere_immortal said, RPS is an excellent website. Same with Gamasutra and Develop.
On the print side, Game Informer is OK as long as you stay away from the fucktarded review section. I don't know if Hardcore Gaming magazine is still around, but they used to be excellent.
Well that video WAS pretty bad. At that resolution, if you removed all the logos, you could probably convince me it's a handheld version of WoW. The design is pretty much spot on from my perspective (though I admittedly am not a player of WoW, just a follower of it's antics).
At the endgame, you have to fight against "MajorRomo" to unlock a battle against a giant lava creature named "Sagnaros"
I really do have a lower opinion of Gameloft than Zynga - at least the latter actually had a unique idea before ripping themselves off repeatedly for money, as far as I can tell Gameloft's entire business plan is "find good games and see how fast we can make a cheap iphone ripoff"

You're kidding, right? Bonus Round is one of the most laughable shows about gaming. They very occassionally have guests who have some idea of what they're talking about (N'Gai, maybe Garnett Lee) but most of the time it's a crew of idiots (Pachter, Shane Satterfield, Brian Crecente, etc). I remember Pachter actually predicting once that this would be the last generation of consoles.
I don't really mind Keighley that much though. He can be a bit of a douche sometimes but then he's in an industry of mostly douches so only being one sometimes is still an improvement.
Well that's weird because I consider N'Gai Croal and Garnett Lee to be the most misinformed and lacklustre luminaries in the gaming industry. They really don't seem to know what they're talking about at the basest level of fact most of the time.
Keighley is just a presenter, and not a terrible one. And Gametrailers as a whole is one of the higher quality outlets and certainly the best for, LOLZ, game trailers.
Real men have RockPaperShotgun bookmarked and ignore everything else, though. I even get my console news from there and they literally don't report on consoles at all.
N'Gai has the mixed fortune of being a latecomer to gaming in general, so while he has the ability to analyze things without a lifetime of gaming experience coloring his opinion, it also tends to lead him to being woefully underinformed about just what's going on, which makes his commentary on damn near anything borderline useless.
At the end of the day, he's pretty much just another mass media game journalist who happens to have a bit more interest in the industry than the average 39-year-old-tech-guy who is typically shoehorned into going to game industry Q&As for shit he doesn't care the first bit about.

I'll never forgive N'Gai for trying so hard for fucking 6 months to turn the 'Resident Evil 5 is racist' thing into a thing. It was a complete non story but he kept going on about it even after release because, I guess, racism is a real world issue and reporting on real world issues validates his profession.
Game Developers Magazine (associated with Gamasutra) is probably my favorite gaming magazine. And it's not just because they're running a post-mortem of mine in an upcoming issue.
They were handing out free copies of Edge magazine at GDC and it seemed like a high quality publication, but man, is a subscription expensive.

Not to start a whole 'thing'. But RE5 literally had african enemies which were zulu esque grass skirt wearing spearchuckers who sacrafice people to crocodiles. And the outcry aimed at shouting down any complaint was telling of standard society memes as a whole.
Though I suppose a lot of the more problematic elements weren't actually apparent until launch.
The racist outcry against RE5 happened because the enemies were black, not because they were racist charactures. Mainly because the outcry happened before the game released and all of the footage was of the city at the start of the game where it's just infected normal people.

Wait, some black people in Africa still live by tribal standards? Get the fuck outta here!

This is pretty much word for word what I was going to write.
I find his writing interesting, but in much the same way I find a child's writing interesting. He has some interesting thoughts, but you can't help see the gaps in his knowledge, as much as I like his written style.
He has a lot of potential.
But yeah, the RE5 thing was annoying.
Also, while on the subject of games rags - EDGE and Eurogamer are both pretty good, but still sometimes fly wide of the mark. GamesTM is a good read too. The Giant Bomb guys seem pretty cool.
I get most of my news from Joystiq, but that site rarely has much content besides blog-style latest news updates or 'Look! New shiny!'-style reviews.
You'd probably have a tough time finding any recent examples of human sacrifice in Africa. Terrible, horrific violence and torture, yes - but nothing equivalent to "We have built a massive worship area dedicated to hanging people by their ankles and feeding them to crocs in pursuit of our unnamed religion".
RE5 is just a massive parade of African stereotypes. Whether that is racist, ignorant, lazy, or just the best marriage of setting with gameplay is entirely up to debate.
I think the reasoning behind it was that the virus (I think it was an offshoot of Plagas) caused a sort of primitiveness to rapidly overtake the population. It was dumb, but it's not like they just believed Africa was like that.
Considering the outcry was there before the grass-skirt tribe showed up, it wasn't going to help matters. No matter how it's explained. They'd have been better off not going that far.
I tend to enjoy the videos from Gametrailers, although I really dislike Geoff Keighley.

No..? Why would I kid? I find it enjoyable to watch because it's not always the same people giving their input (Pachter excluded), whether one may agree with them or find them detestable. I like to hear about how they view the industry and what their takes on things are. I don't always jive with what someone has to say, but I feel it keeps me from having this "holier than thou" attitude towards gaming.
I'd love it if I could get DICE and GDC-style panel discussions each week, but that's not the case, so I take what I can get. Sometimes it's more fun to occupy myself with the topics surrounding gaming than the actual playing of games. After all, it's why I come to this thread and read all the posts here and read Penny-Arcade. I want to hear what others have to say.

This game wasn't a natural occurence, or some kind of documentry.
It's there because the designers wanted it there, and they came up with a poor excuse to justify it.
At best they made a game with uncomfortable overtones because of their steep ignorance of the countries they planned to sell it to, which is why, you know, most sensible companies selling abroad do some research.
The outrage over RE5 is the ultimate example of white guilt.
Actually, it's just the next step in the identity politics rumba that occurs when people see some representation and then project themselves into the victim slot.
I still can't believe that a Haitian group was pissed off about Vice City because of a cutscene featuring a rival gang leader declared that they wanted the Haitians dead.
White guilt about RE5 happened when arguing in defense of Capcom makes you look even worse as a human being.
RE5 was pretty much like Gilligan's Island - absolutely nothing in it can be justified or explained by any understanding of geography, anthropology, or science, but it's still fun for what it is so long as you don't think about it too much.
But, if you do find yourself thinking about it too much, prepare for plenty frowny-face "What the Christ?" type times.

What I like most about japanese developers is that they don't give a shit about being PC.
Now seems like a good time to remind everybody about how Left 4 Dead 2 was a racist game because the team of protagonists which was 50% black kills some zombies who happen to also be black.
Remember how great that was?
I guess it would have been more acceptable to depict an American south where there are no black people at all? Because then there would be none to become infected, after all...
What I like most about japanese developers is that they don't give a shit about being PC.
Having spent a lot of time in Japan, I wouldn't conflate "not giving a shit" here with "having absolutely no clue".
Japan, for lots of social and political reasons I won't go into here, has a bit of a different outlook when it comes to race relations. I think many would say that they're not very progressive about the issue.
I do think that for the most part, many Japanese people are content to operate with stereotypes, although not necessarily with bad intentions.

I mean I enjoyed it for sure, but have gotten pretty tired of the 'pc gone mad!' brigade.
Though the most unfortunate implications aren't even the race stuff.
It's the failed science experiments who are half starved people who try to cling to you as you poke around their corpses for rings, and jewlery, feeding them into a giant furnace, as loud speakers are used to talk about a new perfect ubermensch world.

That he promises more than he delivers is a fact. And I'm certainly not saying he should be immune to criticism. However, I get this feeling that everybody takes it so personal, like they were so looking forward to whatever new thing he was going to do. Then, when it (inevitably) doesn't happen, they react like he kicked their dog.
I maintain that this goes back to the whole outspoken thing. People only like it if they can deliver and very few ever deliver. If Reggie was a spokesman for Lionhead, people would hate him, too.
