"PC and PSN would also make a lot of sense, but in my opinion, WiiWare just wouldn't be worth our time and effort. It's a dismal system that I don't want to deal with neither as a customer, nor a developer. No demos? Fuck off."
WiiWare has demos.
I was just about to post that. WiiWare is a problem for a lot of reasons, but lack of demo support is not one of them.

And in response, he said this:
Still, depending on who you are and what your game is, that could still mean "no demo" for you. A lot of WiiWare devs aren't graced with a demo, or see their demo dropped from the service less than a month later.
Still kind of a dumb thing to say to begin with when on Monday Wiiware got nothing but demos.
It's fair to say that WiiWare's handling of demos is highly lacking: on all the other services, demos are de facto available at all times. Fez is the sort of game which really benefits from a demo, and not being able to control that aspect is a big drawback to the service for content providers.

Well, at the rate of which he's developing Fez, he wouldn't be able to put a demo on WiiWare anyway since the Wii will be long gone. It's been, what, 4 years since it was unveiled?
So Will Wright makes one botched game and suddenly he's not a game designer? Hoookay.

Yeah, and I think that every time we get gameplay vids, it's usually just the first couple of minutes over and over.
honestly even though spore's gameplay was a bit lacking, the creature creator was pretty awesome, the fact you can create a backbone, slap legs/arms/whatever, move the around and have the game rig it on the spot is pretty nifty, i mean i've spent hours rigging a character and it didn't even look as good as that :?
Sim games are sandbox games. Sure they have objectives to give you goals but the whole point is to try different things and have fun.
Killing your sims or destroying your city are things that you are supposed to do. Otherwise Simcity wouldn't have disasters that you can call at any time.
Honestly though, I say don't let him in unless he agrees to a Simcity rip-off. Obviously EA isn't in a hurry to make a new one. Bastards.
The problem with his games is that the only way to really have fun is to do the exact opposite of what you are supposed to be doing. Such as in the case of any Sims game I try to make dysfunctional sims, or kill them in stupid ways like stranding them in a pool without a ladder, then collecting their ghosts in my house. And in the case of Spore, putting the disk in the microwave and setting it to five minutes. Far more enjoyable in both cases than actually playing those games as intended.
You are playing them as intended
The point of all of those games is to do whatever the hell you want
The reason Spore was bad was because of how rigid it was structurally compared to pretty much everything else Will Wright had made
I just realized that April 1st is just around the corner. I hate April fools day.
My problem is that nobody puts in any effort any more. As in, there's a million lazy and obvious stories, that I suppose are the level because you don't want to say something beyond that and be sued for libel or whatever. It just becomes a mechanical trawl through stupid news stories written by bored interns trying to be 'wacky'. The saving grace is companies like Blizzard who tend to put in a lot of effort, but even then it's "oh, that's their April Fool's thng", like a marketing stunt not a convincing effort.
What I'm saying is, I want to get to be surprised again.
To be fair none of us are 11 years old anymore. April Fools Day is just the opposite of St Paddy's Day, awesome when you're a kid but irrelevant when you're an adult.
I loved Saint Patricks day as a kid. Green boxers was the way to go when a girl went to pinch you...
Anyway, agreed on April Fools. I ignore game news on the 1st as game media is always the worse at trying to fool you. Most other new outlets actually try to stay professional on the 1st.

My problem with it is most companies just use it as an excuse to lie about stuff that many want. That annoys me since I don't know at all what to believe throughout that day.
Microsoft is gearing up for the next Xbox 360 system update, but it needs gamers' help testing a few things out. The company today announced a new System Update Preview Program for US-based Xbox 360 owners to help test a new disc format for the system.
By signing up at the Microsoft Connect website and filling out a survey, US gamers can volunteer to take part in the preview program. Multiple thousands of gamers will be chosen to participate, with Xbox Live Gold members receiving priority over their nonpaying Xbox Live Silver counterparts.
Participants will receive a copy of Halo: Reach (and possibly other rewards as well) for their trouble, but the program is not without risk. During the registration process, Microsoft warns that due to the nature of prerelease software updates, there's a chance participants could wind up with nonfunctioning systems. The agreement makes no mention of Microsoft repairing systems broken as a result of the update.
When asked what security or storage benefits the new disc format might bring, a Microsoft representative told GameSpot there were no additional details to share at this time.
...what. Surely something got garbled in passing. Surely Microsoft isn't coming up with a brand-new disk format for the 360 that would horribly split the market and piss people off a la Sega in the Sega CD/32X/Saturn days, right? RIGHT?!?

It's still DVD. They're just fiddling with the format to allow developers to make use of previously reserved disc space.
Nintendo will be investing over 12 billion yen to construct a new research and development facility in its home town of Kyoto, Nikkan reports today. Word of the new facility first broke in February 2009.
The new facility will be located in the Higashikujo Matsudacho area of Kyoto's Minami Ward. This will place it closer to Nintendo's main office, also located in the Minami Ward, than Nintendo's current Kyoto Research Center R&D facility, which is located in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward.
In constructing the new building so close to its headquarters, Nintendo hopes to bring its workforce together to improve efficiency. Once completed, the new building will house 1,500 employees, primarily focusing on product development, andwill be Nintendo's main research facility.
Nintendo acquired the 40,582 square meter lot that will house the new building at the end of 2008. The lot was previously a golf range called Kyoto Minami Golf Garden.
The completed building will span seven stories -- one basement and six floors above ground. Its highest point will stand 41 meters off the ground. The first floor will be the entrance and will have meeting rooms. The seventh floor will have a cafeteria.
Nintendo hopes to begin construction in January 2012 with completion targeted for some time in 2013.
I want to debate what this means. But I don't want to have to be constantly hitting refresh over and over again to keep up with said debate.
Weakness of the lineup going against a Final Fantasy game? All the current issues in Japan keeping the mainstream away from purchasing games? Only the dedicated game players going out to purchase games? Areas not effected by blackouts and lack of food are more fans of Sony than Nintendo?
Theories?
I'll just sit here and hit refresh over and over again.
Well if nothing else the tsunami's probably thrown the viral 'Play it and let your friends see how awesome it is themselves' thing completely out the window.
Is there any truth to the idea that Japanese people are more prone to motion sickness? If that's the case, then they could also be more likely to get headaches from the 3D effect of the 3DS which could hurt sales.
Although to be honest, the major reason is probably just that the system and games are both fairly expensive.
I think once there's better software 3DS sales will pick up.
There are a few things I can think of:
1) PSP and 3DS games look similarly graphically.
2) PSP is $160, 3DS is $250
3) PSP has more buzz. It's supply constrained and sold out everywhere.
4) PSP has better software already and has more high profile games in the wings.
5) 3DS demo kiosks may be making people sick and turning people off to the product.
6) The viral marketing never was going to work. The AR games are cute, but they're not going to convince people in the way that Wii sports did.
EDIT: Since it's been mentioned, the DS really picked up steam at around 2006 when Mario and Brain Training came out. THAT is what really pushed DS over PSP in Japan. I don't think the same hand will work twice, the burden is on Nintendo to create that new piece of software that really makes people take interest in the system. Also they now get to compete with smartphones, so that whole blue ocean demographic may be unreachable.
In an announcement today, Konami Digital Entertainment revealed that it has promoted industry veteran and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima to vice president.
The new position will become effective from April 1. The promotion comes as part of a wave of new appointments at the company, including additions to the board of directors.
Pro Evolution Soccer producer Shinji Enomoto has also been promoted to a vice president role, while three new directors have been named -- Mineaki Yoshiba, Yasuyuki Yamaji and Kazuyuki Kisohara.
Kazuhiko Nakanishi has also been newly appointed to the company as standing corporate auditor.
Kazuhiko Uehara, currently a corporate officer for Konami, will replace Michihiro Ishizuka as CEO of Hudson Soft, following Konami's complete takeover of the Bomberman creator.
Last month Konami reported roughly flat sales and a drop in profits for the first nine months of the 2010 fiscal year. The Tokyo-based publisher said its business segments "roughly [met] their earnings forecast, despite the postponement of several titles."
Rovio's Vesterbacka defends mobile games, calls out Nintendo's '$49 pieces of plastic'
"A lot of people in the games industry, they think the 'real' games are on consoles. You're only a 'real' games company if you do a big budget game. But we don't have that inferiority complex," Rovio head Peter Vesterbacka told MCV in a recent interview. Vesterbacka was defending against Nintendo's latest criticisms of the mobile market -- both Nintendo of Japan head Satoru Iwata and Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime have argued that low-priced smartphone apps are degrading the value of games.
"If I was trying to sell a $49 pieces of plastic to people then yes, I'd be worried too," Vesterbacka added, with a tinge of vitriol, alluding to the standard retail price of a Wii game disc. "But I think it's a good sign that people are concerned -- because from my point of view we're doing something right." Rovio's Angry Birds and its spin-offs are just a $1 each for iPhone and are offered as free, ad-supported apps on the Android Market.
Still, the company has plans for more console development, having already released Angry Birds as a PlayStation Mini, with additional console ports in the pipeline -- even Nintendo's 3DS is getting an Angry Birds port. "Games consoles for us are just like launching on a new smartphone platform," Vesterbacka said nonchalantly. After all, he's probably more concerned with the movie tie-in, the planned US IPO, and, uh, having an Angry Bird etched into the Moon.
Okay, that last one probably isn't happening. Yet.
Mass Effect 3 PS3 details coming April
Wednesday 30-Mar-2011 11:10 AM First look coming in next month's games mags
It looks like Mass Effect 3 gameplay details should be with us within a month, as games mags start to tease the BioWare sequel for their next issues.
One such mag is respected UK unofficial title, PSM3. Its current edition promises a "world-first look at Mass Effect 3 on PS3" in its next issue, which goes on sale on April 28.
The French Official PlayStation Magazine's also promising a "long overdue" gaming return for its next issue, whilst US retailer mag Game Informer's promising a reveal of a "highly anticipated" sequel to one of 2010's best games. That's Mass Effect 3, then.
It'll be a busy month for game fans by the looks of it, especially if as reported Modern Warfare 3 shows its cards in mid-April too.
Mass Effect 2's final DLC add-on, Arrival, hit Xbox Live yesterday.

Can't say anything about St. Patrick's day mostly because we don't celebrate it at all.
Edit: the new disc format might just be a variation of a DVD and be playable on any Xbox after an up-date.

1.4 GB? Now that's a manly chunk of copy protection.
Also that makes a hell of a lot more sense.
Huh.

December 2006 NPD:
* Nintendo DS - 1600K
* Wii - 604,200
* 360 - 1100K
* PS2 - 1500K
* PS3 - 490,700
* PSP - 953,200
The PS2 still pulled 1.5 million in a month despite three new consoles (well the 360 was a year old) on the market and outsold them all.
Although to be honest, the major reason is probably just that the system and games are both fairly expensive.
