    it's hiberno-english that we're concerned with though

I'm pretty sure it's the same there too

the one place it might be different is a strong british accent where the double t can be pronounced as a glottal stop

This is done in Yorkshire, but we say Paddy and Patty differently.

Could you quantify the difference in words? Either way, record it for science!

Well, I don't know the technical terms. "Pad'y" "Pat'y". Only one "t" would be missed out, even though its a double. I think the difference is because there is no "le" at the end like in bottle and little, which are shortened to "bo'le" and "li'le" where no "t" at all is said. However, that is with a strong Yorkshire accent, while my accent is milder it'll be "bot'le" with the one, short, "t". Rather than the elongated double "t" of "bottle" in an RP accent.

Am I making sense? Probably not!

from what i hear, the north of england is like a mix of the southern united states and our so-called "rust belt", which is all dilapidated steel and factory towns and such.

they have distinct pronunciations at least in a lot of places, I can't speak for every dialect, there are a lot

maybe the north and the richer dublin areas they sound the same thinking on it

The difference between t and d is only in voicing, ie whether or not your vocal chords are vibrating. You can see that difference by saying 'fat' and 'vat'; v is voiced and you can feel the vocal vibration, whereas the f is simply exhalation with the lower lip touching the upper teeth.

Same thing with t and d; it's the exact same configuration of lips/teeth/tongue, but d involves vibration whereas t does not. However, because they're "stops" (as opposed to f and v, which are fricatives), and thus would stop the flow of air if fully pronounced, when occurring inside a word they're both usually reduced to the same sound: the alveolar flap, which involves flicking your tongue off the roof of your mouth just behind the teeth.

Again, in some british isles pronunciations the double t can be reduced to a glottal stop (ie Oh no, me coat's lost a buh'in) instead of the flap, which would differentiate Patty from Paddy. Of Ireland, I've only really spent time in County Clare so I guess it's not the most representative sample; would you pronounce "Patty" as Pa'ee?

I don't know if I can write it out phonetically in a way that makes the difference apparent uh Pad-ee, Pat-ee

when I say Patty I'd but a lot of stress on the 't' sound (which is kind of a characteristic of the irish accent).

basically d and t difference would be fairly clear. But I think if you pronounce them the same my little spelling attempt above won't be much help

Ohh stay classy Yorkshire, stay classy.

That is pretty much it, Metzger. Yeah. Though we do have some nice areas, we're surrounded by beautiful countryside and despite what people think, we are generally a friendly bunch.

Is that a scantily clad girl, Staleghoti? I imagine that the girls who go about dressed like they don't know what it is to be cold at night change their usual outfit for green, but its not a big deal really over here. We're not Irish, so don't really bother much. Maybe an excuse to go out for a drink, but you don't get loads of people dressing up.

Not really, only in that they have an "le" at the end, not little "rattle" and "cattle" would rhyme.
