Agreed. Anyone with half a brain would prefer a pet they never see, coughs up shit all over the place, leaves the house reeking of urine and scratches the shit out of everything. I know I'd much rather pay for food, medication and shelter for an animal that shows no affection.
Sarcasm. Cats suck, dogs rule.
It's funny because that exact description seems to apply more to dogs, except replace the "never see" part with "won't ever leave you or company the hell alone, is extremely loud at the most inappropriate times and won't do shit about household pests."
guys guys guys, i think we can all agree dogs at least make for a better game, i mean "sit! *the dog sits* you taught the dog to sit, give it a treat!" vs
"sit! *the cat looks at you like it wishes you were dead and replaced with a food vending machine* *you cry*"

Cat's don't generally do tricks because they are too smart. But you can teach a cat to do tricks if you properly motivate him, it's just harder than with dogs.

8/10 - but for comparison's sake, they gave SSFIV and Nintendogs 6/10, so that's a pretty glowing review. They also gave Radiant Historia an 8/10, and I've found that game to be wonderful, so if they're being consistent, it looks like Ghost Recon is actually quite good.
Just the sort of review I was hoping to hear. Sounds like this will not disappoint, especially because whatever reason they knocked 2 points off seemed not to be worth mentioning in the review (lack of 3ds features/multiplayer I'm guessing?).
Anyone know any Canadian retailers who have this one out on their shelves already? I'd like to go buy it now and simplify launch day.
Edit: will NOT disappoint. Doh.
Zellers has it. Not only that, if you buy it and another Ubisoft game you'll get them both for 50% off.
Personally, I figure I'll alternate in SSF4 between Pro and Lite modes...Pro for when I want to practice and feel legit, Lite when I remember that I'm horrific at fighting games and just want to tear shit up.
As long as you can filter your opponents based on what control scheme they're using, everything should be cool. I was alarmed at that article for a second when I thought he was saying you couldn't. I think after the game's been out a little longer you'll find more "serious" opponents in Pro mode.

Thanks for the heads up. Got it at walmart already though.
There's a problem with that deal though:
You would have to buy another Ubisoft game :winky:
So is there actual legitimacy to the K-Mart deal of getting $25 off a 3DS game when you buy a 3DS? I saw a thread about it on CAG, but the guy posting it basically "heard about it from his manager friend," and we all know how that can go.
Also, is the B1G1 50% at TRU for 3DS games legit as well, and does that require the purchase of a 3DS, or is it simply a deal on 3DS games, period, for that week?
Edit: Err..the K-Mart was from a Facebook page of someone who I guess was employed by K-Mart. The TRU deal was a guy who "heard it from his manager friend." Got those mixed up.

I don't think we're going to know if it's legit until the day of. When I worked at TRU I don't remember us announcing these things in advance, although I didn't work in the [strike]R-zone[/strike] electronics department and I generally didn't know about or bother to keep track of sales until I walked in and they handed me that day's ad so I'd have some idea what people would be desperately searching for/rudely demanding that day.
But from what we've heard I don't think a 3DS purchase will be required, it's just a sale on the games.

Unfortunately, I think chances are pretty slim that it will ever see the light of day - in the US, anyway.
Is that real? It's... it's beautiful.
Wait, no. Pimp. There we go.
The images are real - they were demo units that were on display following Nintendo's big E3 hoopla last year. They showed off an orange 3DS and a red 3DS, too. But much like they did with the Gamecube reveal years ago, the idea was to show the unit in range of different colors as a concept. They pretty much said from the get go that - in order to secure initial production capacities yaddayaddayadda - many color variants won't be happening for a while. Similar to how the DS lite (I think) was originally only available in white. However, you can bet there will be a gazillion different colors (limited and otherwise) through the system's life - much like what they've done with every DS up to this point.
So, I had SF4 pre-ordered because it looks like the best game out for 3DS in terms of overall quality and utilization of the system's features.
I also had Pilotwings preordered, but now it's looking a little lackluster and I just found out that Ghost Recon was made by the guy who did X-COM... looks like I'm going to need to go switch 'em.

I wanted the orange one from the second I saw it. I'm sad it will never see retail.

They showed an awesome copper coloured one too. I wanted that one.
Gah..i would love to get one, but the economic situation is a bit tight atm
I'm sure I'll end up getting one eventually, maybe once they drop the price 50$ or so. Seems to have an amazing lineup planned.

I don't know what cats you people have been around if you think they're not unbelievably affectionate and intelligent.
My cats are just so incredibly needy even when they've just been fed. At any given moment they're not sleeping they'll 1) sit by your left ear and let loose the most heart-wrenching cry until you pay some attention to them, 2) go off and attempt to knock over or destroy some priceless documentation/fine ornaments/leather goods, or 3) attack/eat loose food items (including leftover pasta or chocolate chip muffins) or 4) get into the fridge and somehow go straight for the vacuum-sealed meats.
Now they're also incredibly affectionate as well, and can certainly be played with (I'm sure owners only know too well the dangers of putting the thing on the end of a bendy stick too close to the feet of loved ones). I think a cat pet game would essentially be a physics-driven chaos simulator with randomized periods of lethargy, including a huge variety of situational puzzles ("it's on top of the door again - how do I get it down with miminal property damage?"). Note how much more complicated that would be to develop than "cute puppy model + canned animations + set lists of tricks".
I love cats and dogs myself, but I also like this quote I heard somewhere. ""Dogs are smart enough to do what you tell them, Cats are smart enough to tell you to go f*** yourself."

I would buy a second 3DS just to host this type of simulation full time. My roommate's cat is great at the chaos simulation, and all kinds of physics experiments. He has to be really smart. He sleeps so much to recharge the crazy that he unleashes when we are all sleeping.
Best thing he has ever done, I was sitting in the living room at the table organizing some papers for a work project, a glass of water next to me. Cat curls up on the table, on top of everything. I shoo him off, "Not right now, I have work to do." He gets off of the table and comes back in a few minutes, paws on the edge of the table, gives me that "I'm not doing anything nefarious at all" look, and lifts his right paw, and shoves the glass of water off the table, onto my lap. While staring me in the eyes.
What an awesome bastard that cat. He had the decency to not get my work wet at least.
My cat has developed the ability to wrap his tail around wine glass stems and then rip them off the table without even looking. I'm not talking pushing off, he deliberately wraps his tail around them and then pulls them off.
I love cats and dogs myself, but I also like this quote I heard somewhere. ""Dogs are smart enough to do what you tell them, Cats are smart enough to tell you to go f*** yourself."
I'm more of a cat person for sure, but I have met digusting, horribly mean cats. I have also met disgusting, yippy god-I-wish-I-could-kick-you dogs, but my parents' dogs are quiet, clean, and cute as all hell.
It's really about the personality of the animal. There are cool dogs and cats, and there are fucking nasty/maladjusted dogs and cats. I don't think you can blanket-statement say that all of one species are horrible.
I think German Shepherds are the most adorable animals (excluding the Red Panda because they are too adorable to exist) but I doubt I'd ever get one. Cats are more my type of animal.
Incidentally, the whole thing with nintendogs + cats reminds me of this.
It's really not quite that bad, at least once you get a cat in the game, but until that happens, it really feels like it.
I'm writing my cat impressions up later. I had hoped to have it up by now, but I wound up being too busy with Pilotwings.
I'll throw this out, though: having a cat and a dog are a lot alike in this game, at least on a basic level.
...incidentally, I don't think cats come when you use your whistle command, in case anyone was wondering. I think you have to actually call their name.

My wife loves German Shepherds, and so does her mom. They've had at least two since we've been together. But she loves cats, too.

I'm becoming increasingly tempted, to pick this up at launch tomorrow. But I'm just curious about one thing. How's the backwards compatibility, for DS games? I've heard it does have it. But is there anything I should know or does it just play them exactly the same as before?

Due to the difference in resolution between the DS and the 3DS (256x192, to 320x240/400x240), DS games will be scaled or bordered on the 3DS. You can choose which. The scaling makes them a little blurrier, and bordering makes them display smaller than on the DS.
Other than that, it's the same as the DSi-- everything's compatible except games that used the GBA slot for something.
I just got home to find an amazon box sitting on my counter, cue child like excitement and box opening, it's the 3ds a day early \o/ (in the uk here)... but nothing to play on it! my games haven't been dispatched yet... what the hellllll.
this blows. I'm now torn, do i turn it on and get the new gadget new 3d effect omg feeling spoiled for me on basic menus and stuff, or do i wait for gaming goodness to blow my mind. I haven't opened the box yet, i don't know what to do anymore haha... i feel like i'm 5 again.
One GAME shop I passed in Paris was already selling units yesterday 23/03/2011 :O
Also, can somebody recommend a good brand of screen protector? I scratched the lower screen of my mint-green japanese import DS lite after the first pencil stroke. This was a horrible experience I don't want to repeat with a 250 Euro device. (Why does the 3DS still use a resistive touchscreen?)

Open it. I'm not getting any 3DS release games (but Shadow Wars might tease me too much once I've got this thing in my hands...) but mine's preordered.

In other news, good news, everyone! Pilotwings/Steel Diver have been dated in Australia.
Pilotwings is the 14th of April, and while Steel Diver is still 'Coming Soon' on their site, I've been told it's out on the 28th of April.
