It doesn't look like there's much in the way of JRPGs right now, I guess SMT could count but it's sort've just a 3D port from the DS. I except Atlus to give us a boatload of awesome though.
As was pointed out in the other thread, RPGs are the kinds of games that take dev time, and as such are generally not so common near system launches
Not that it really matters anyway, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D is going to make everyone forget that they ever desired other games, let alone gave thought to making other purchases. Once it graces us with its presence and enters 3DS slots everywhere we will find ourselves at the pinnacle of the heighest heights of gaming. All the other games we have consumed will not even begin to compare. Henceforth, they will all exist in a vast gaming ghetto located far far below the most sacred and revered of plateaus upon which Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D will be placed. People everywhere will simultaneously connect, their 3DS systems tethered to walls so that their batteries never run out, and we will all weep for joy as we are united in a moment that defies all others. We will unblinkingly gaze into the greatest achievement that could ever be achieved, and we will all be too hopelessly transfixed to bother to wonder how this could have resulted from that which was created by the hands of mere mortals. Our fragile copreal bodies will be overtaken by the sheer brilliance of an experience that will transcend interactive art and become something greater, something God-like, although we will never truly possess the language required to even begin to adequately describe it. Nor will we bother to either, as we will remain transfixed eternally, powerless to ignore that which is before us and rendered completely unable to do all else. Rendered completely unable to want anything else.
Or . . . at least this undefiable moment in time would last eternally, but as mortals it would have to eventually end as is written by the laws of nature. And so we will take in this splendor that nullifies all else until we collectively perish, and at this time we too will become like the dinosaur, but through them we will have seen the virtual equivalent of the face of God. And if he exists and we meet him in the afterlife, here we will all find ourselves united once again. United in the immense dissappointment that he is not a dinosaur, fighting other dinosaurs . . . in 3D. And at this time we will wish to undo the fact that we ever existed as the only thing that we could ever possibly begin to desire will be out of reach for all eternity. An eternity without Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D.
Forumer Two Headed Boy actually received this at work and so we should hopefully have impressions about the game soon. They might have to be transcribed by someone else as he basks into the void of perfection murmuring about its utter . . . perfectness, but I look forward to it nonetheless! I'm anxious to hear about the 3D effect (and the overwhelming bliss of course).
Hey man, my nephew has the bug game on DS that those guys made and it's actually pretty cool. I was surprised.
After seeing the 3ds hands on i have to say that nintendos got one thing going against it marketing wise...
When the Nintendo 64 first came out it was all about the polygons and 3d....in fact im pretty sure we overused the word 3d to describe so many games just because they were technically 3d ...but the 3ds isnt the same. its 3.5d or something. its not quite the same 3d as games have claimed it was for so long, and its not the same 3d you see on tv screens wearing funky glasses.
This in a way is the reverse of that. The glasses made the image appear to leap off the screen of the tv. The 3ds turns the screen into a shoebox with little people inside it. I'm really surprised that the simple notion of putting the depth behind the screen instead of in front of is not one that has happen before (to any sucess at least...i vaguely recall a stand up arcade game that looked like a hologram...but played like shit).
I really cant wait to see more. I tore myself away after only a few minutes of testing time so I could enjoy the experience later in full instead of with a bolted down 'i basically have to sit on a box/kneel on the ground to use it demo unit.
Not only because of the gaming possibilities...but the technician in me is massively impressed by the tech.
I've decided that I want two things out of the 3DS.
1. Super Metroid retrofitted with 3D (This would be the 10th or so time I would have bought it)
2. A upgraded port of Shadow Complex fitted with 3D.
I get the feeling that you like Metroid! All we'd need is a port/spinoff version of Arkham Asylum, and then we'd have my three favorite Metroid games all together.
I can't dig it up now since I'm posting from my phone, but Sporky, thanks for digging up that Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (p)review - it has not swayed me and I'm still set for now on making that my sole launch pickup. I'm excited about the 3DS, but not as much from a Day 1 perspective so much as the promise of what this year and the future holds (Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, the new Super Mario, whatever third-party surprises come, and hoping that the e-shop ends up being awesome).
I was lucky enough to get my fill of the AR games and general built-in tomfoolery at an earlier press event, so none of that has me chomping at the bit. I would like to see if I could score Pilotwings on the cheap in a month or two and see if it's something that would entertain me beyond a few hours, and there's still a part of me that might want SSFIV just to play with you guys, but I think I'll be spending the spring and summer hacking through my backlog anyway.

How can you tell? :P
Actually a portable Arkham Asylum would be awesome too. But yea, there was a lot of Shadow Complex that took place in the backround, it so needs to be on the 3DS. Too bad Epic are morons who seem to hate Nintendo. :x
Oh, and BTW the scuttlebutt on GAF is that IGN's review of Steel Diver is going up today; a podcast mention only hinted that the game was "way too short," so it might end up falling into a Pilotwings situation where it won't be for people that are done with a game after one solid playthrough. This is really a staple for most launch games for any system, though; it's why I typically don't buy systems right at launch. :P
Any word on the Splinter Cell 3DS game yet? I was thinking of picking it up on launch day. Maybe Street Fighter, too.
The rumors on the Internets are that the Ubisoft launch games have review embargos until launch. :? Take from that what you will. I still think that Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars will be a purchase from me, but I'm still wavering between a day-1 buy or waiting a week or two to see what other people think. Honestly, the promo above has me reconsidering my ragequitting affinity for fighting games; SSFIV 3D seems to be far and away the most fully featured launch title with good online and StreetPass modes.
EDIT: Also, for anyone who hasn't preordered and is just going to buy, you may want to check out KMart: According to one of their official game bloggers, if you buy a 3DS unit at KMart from 3/27 to 4/3, you instantly save $25 on any launch title! That's pretty rad. KMart has been really aggressive on gaming deals as of late.

It's the only thing that could save Final Fantasy.
Why use FF7 when FF8 was so much better?
You know what Brainiac? You're all right.
Hard to believe this thing is coming out so soon. I myself have never seen a 3D move, TV show, or videogame in my life, so I imagine the 3DS cause some sort of visual overload that short circuits my brain.
I can't wait.

Holy crap, I didn't realize we were so close to release on this.
I admit I haven't been following the threads, but I am curious about people who have played the 3DS with glasses. I'm nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other, so I pretty much have to wear glasses all the damned time to be a functional human being. Every damned time I've gone to a 3D movie, wearing 3D glasses over my own glasses has sucked ass. I get blurriness a-go-go, and nothing other than that. I assume this is just because the 3D glasses are too far away from my face, and that because of this the 3DS will be a sweet, sweet taste of the third dimension in media I've never experienced. Some folks have told me, though, that it's less a function of glasses as it is vision. I do have a few friends who just can't 'see' 3D, glasses or no.
I'm also going to assume that finding one of these is going to be positively the most difficult thing ever. Best Buy around me isn't doing a midnight launch, sadly. Does anyone know if you can preorder from a Best Buy in a brick and mortar store? I know they do online preorders, but I'm too impatient for delivery.
Finding one is gonna be tricky, no doubt. I recommend waiting in Wal-mart, as they're open 24 hours, you (often) can wait inside, and if you bring some people and get bored, you can buy a board game. I played "Simpsons Game Of Life" with some random people for a few hours while I was waiting for a Wii :-D

FWIW, I wear glasses 24/7 (nearsighted in both eyes, though my left is worse than my right) and I had absolutely no problem with the 3DS. I've never tried 3D in the theaters, though.
The slider functionality seems to mitigate a lot of people's problems as you can find your own level of comfort/3D-ness, but yeah, a lot of the 3DS's effects are going to be highly subjective, based on a ton of different variables on individual preferences, biological abilities of sight, the individual game's application of 3D effects, the mechanical aspects of how you're holding the system, what angle/distance you're viewing it from, etc.
It sounds kind of crazy technical, and going by Internet buzz about the Best Buy demo units I guess it is, but when I tried it, I was kind of taken aback at how easily it worked for me. Like, the first time I saw it (a demo guy was showing it off), I just kind of blurted out, "Oh shit, it actually works!"
Also, it's hard to say if this thing is genuinely going to be difficult to find right at launch or not. Nintendo hasn't rolled out the full strength of its marketing campaigns yet, and the higher price plus lack of one singular bona fide killer app makes it seem like more of a soft launch. I wouldn't place any bets, but I'd think the system won't be overly difficult to find until the summer/fall, when Ocarina is out, E3 surprise announcements have been made and the looming shadow of Mario Kart 3DS is on the horizon.
Best Buy does do instore preorders; they usually have cards or empty boxes with the system or game name on them littered around their gaming departments, and you take one of those with you to the register and make a small deposit. Then they keep the items at the service desk or one of the registers on launch day, and you bring your receipt and pay the balance off and take your stuff home. I don't know if they're taking preorders for the 3DS, though. Target are doing in-store preorders, however.
I preordered online because I don't have to pay sales tax, and it ended up being cheaper than buying in store with sales tax would have been. Also, I've got quizzes the Monday after launch, so I don't really want to stay up all night on that Saturday to get a game system. Most people won't have that issue. :P
Still haven't decided whether I'll get a second game or not.
Only 8.5 days to go! I'm assuming that the fact that I haven't received an email from Best Buy telling me about being able to pick up my pre-order isn't any indication that I'm later in the queue, since I haven't seen anyone else say that they've gotten an email.
And Two Headed Boy, I know you're probably under embargo and all that, but if you could, you know, secretly release details about Ghost Recon, it would be very much appreciated.
Quick Amazon question: along with the 3DS one of the games that I preordered was Dead or Alive.
Since it seems it isn't a launch title anymore will it delay my whole order or will they just ship me whatever they have?

I also wear glasses 24/7 (heavily nearsighted), I tried the demo unit out at BB and i could see the effect without a problem.

I think that's dependent upon your order settings, go into the order and change the shipping speed and there should be an option for "send as soon as they're available" or "send in as few boxes as possible."

I wear glasses as well. 3DS' effect works just fine.
Of course, I can see 3D at the movies as well. It's very annoying wearing the glasses over my own, but I can still see it.
I've decided that I want two things out of the 3DS.

I think I'll go with portable Smash Bros and as many awesome Advance Wars and Castlevania games as Intelligent Systems and Konami can crank out myself. So, three things I guess!
That first one you mention sound really good too though from everything I've heard about the game on here (and the fact that its Metroid). I actually intend to do some serious Metroid playing soon here as I've barely scratched the surface on Super Metroid (own it on virtual console but in my youth I had a Genesis, so I was probably playing through Sonic 2 again at that time) and Corruption is the one Wii game I own that has remained unbeaten.

I looked for this when I went last time but didn't see anything. I'm sort of tempted to just go for it and get there at opening. I have a feeling they are not going to sell out - there doesn't seem to be nearly as much hype surrounding this as the Wii had. And I've never had problems getting a Nintendo handheld on launch day before either.

Amazon UK has reported the 3DS has the highest number of preorders of all time for a game system, beating Wii and PS3.
At the same time, yeah, it shouldn't be that bad. This is early spring, after all. It'll probably get bad around November.
If you've already pre-ordered then to take advantage of the Amazon UK pre-order extras (free screen protector, cheap case, £15 game) all you have to do cancel your previous pre-order and make another one!
No thanks! I like being head of the queue.
Plus I don't actually want any of the extra cruft they are trying to push.

Super Metroid holds a rare place in that it's a near perfect game in every way. Enough story without being bogged down, atmosphere was tops, it was cold, creepy, and isolated feeling...and the boss battles were spectacular. And the ending....oh the ending.
From what I have seen of the Nintendo ports that have made it to the DS and 3DS so far, only N64 games are being considered! Not that I mind given that one of those games is Ocarina of Time and its getting the substanital overhaul that it is. Hopefully they go that extent with Starfox, but even if they don't its still a great game that will probably benefit a lot from simply being in 3D.

There is a whole section of the e-shop that deals with 3D retrofitted NES/SNES games. One of the games they had people demo was Punch Out.

So are these games still the same pixels just set up for 3D or enhanced to cleaner art/sprites?

They need to make F-Zero and Super Mario Kart (both SNES) work in 3D That would be pretty neat. Actually, the N64 versions would be pretty awesome too.

By most reports, the same pixels with modifications to make it look 3D. Possibly looking like these, if you can do cross eyed 3D.
I just moved and am really strapped for cash this month. I had canceled my preorder on Amazon for the black 3DS... but! i! can't! resist!
Now I am planning on selling my white DS Lite and my Bronze DSiXL to Gamestop to get $150 credit towards the 3DS. No plans on buying any launch games, I just want to have it to be ready for the future.
Question about the DSiXL. How do I remove all of my personal info off the device? Only bought a few DSiware titles that i may lose now right? I just don't want to sell it back to Gamestop then the next owner has my account info and games.

I honestly don't know what game I want for launch, and am thinking about cancelling my order because of it.
Rayman is the only really appealing title, as it's a game I never got around to playing, but I know a lot of people love it. There's no telling that it won't be a shitty port, though.

There is going to be a way to transfer DSi games. I'm not sure if they have given the details on how yet but they've confirmed it will happen. Since you don't plan on buying any launch games you may just want to wait.

And Two Headed Boy, I know you're probably under embargo and all that, but if you could, you know, secretly release details about Ghost Recon, it would be very much appreciated.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.

There is a whole section of the e-shop that deals with 3D retrofitted NES/SNES games. One of the games they had people demo was Punch Out.

I'd take both. a Super Metroid 3D port with a brand new second quest. Yes please.
So are these games still the same pixels just set up for 3D or enhanced to cleaner art/sprites?

Thanks for bringing that up.
By most reports, the same pixels with modifications to make it look 3D. Possibly looking like these, if you can do cross eyed 3D.
