For what it's worth I have yet to see a single crash. I have wireless on 100% of the time, but I only have Pilotwings and SSF4. That makes me worry about my plan to pick up Ghost Recon when these 2 get old...
I've never seen it as drastic as that yellow one. One of my cameras seems a bit darker than the other but as you can see above it's not always noticeable. With your yellow pic I'd almost say that's enough to ask Nintendo about it, if you can get it to do that pretty consistently.
Hey, a fellow DC resident. We should all get together for a happy hour street pass extravaganza.
I think I suck at SSF4, because I honest to god cannot do the stupid combos in the challenges. I'm trying to do the jump.HK+HP+Cannon Spike combo with Cammy, but the Cannon Spike either whiffs because the HP pushes Dan out of range, or the combo simply ends before the Cannon Spike hits. So I took it into tutorial mode, and turned on the input display (just to make sure I wasn't accidentally inputting things and slowing down my Cannon Spike execution)... no, no extraneous movements. So I mapped Cannon Spike to a Touch Screen button, but I STILL can't get the combo to execute properly.
I want to ask if this combo is even possible, but I'm sure it is and I'm just missing something....

Some of the combos are insanely tight as far as timing windows are concerned, and with many of the more advanced ones you have to layer your inputs. I've only done a few of them, but a lot of the basic combo challenges are [jump attack], [standing attack], [special move]. You have to kind of prime the moves ahead of time; the instant you hit the standing attack button, you have to roll into the special attack motion. I'm sure someone in the SSFIV thread or maybe a YouTube video can give you a much better explanation than I'm giving.
I figured that too, and I tried to make it a smooth motion from the standing punch to the roll. And I feel like I'm making the transition pretty seamlessly... but there must be some lag SOMEWHERE. What gets me is the fact that even using the Lite Touchpad controls isn't working for me, either. If I press it too soon nothing happens, and if I mash the button until the special move comes out, the combo breaks. Blargh.
Out of interest, has anyone in the Pal regions experienced crashes. I'm wondering if it might be a problem with the american models since I only started hearing about crashes post US release.

I have a PAL 3DS and just had my 2nd crash. Both were while playing Ghost Recon. I'm going to try turning off wifi and see how it goes.
The first crash gave me the black screen error message, the 2nd both screens started interlacing and went white, had to hard shutdown the system.

I'm one of those scrubs experiencing Street Fighter 4 (or really any "serious" fighting game) for the first time.
Are you actually supposed to use those challenge combos in a real game? Were they programmed in specifically as presented in challenges, or can anything be comboed like that and challenge is just examples? Either way I can't imagine ever pulling them off with any regularity. I tried like 100 times to do Ryu's second or third combo before I got it, and gave up after that.

Yeah, they're supposed to teach you bread-and-butter combos. I wouldn't really be too worried though, from what I've read SF is more a defensive game than a combo fest like MvC.
I've been focusing on Dudley, and some of the more basic combos (the three-hit jobs, usually the jump-in, one or two hits, then a basic special) come quite in handy online. Seeing some of the more advanced players online is humbling -- they use those frame-canceling combos constantly.
Also, I've spent a bit more time with Pilotwings today, and it's growing on me quickly. Definitely a lot harder than I was expecting, at least to perfect a mission or even just score 3 stars. Sticking the landing is always the hard part, and I never played the n64 version but I'm getting a lot of flashbacks to the SNES original, which I haven't played in easily 15 years. So far hang gliding is my favorite -- very relaxing, and the music is really great, but every other track just sounds like bad porn music.
The 3D is crazy at first, but I found myself getting more used to it as time goes on. I had it really low at first, just barely above the 2D setting, but after spending some time I was able to get to about 50 or 60 percent and be more comfortable with it.
I love how the menu looks in 3D when you use the home button while in a game. What you're playing gets pushed into the screen and you get a layered effect of 3D icons floating above the game. Also, ultra combos are amazing in 3D.

Not a single crash yet in SSF4, Ridge Racer, or Samurai Warriors. Maybe I'm just lucky?
I know I've mentioned this before, but my enjoyment of Samurai Warriors is lessened to an almost incalculable degree by how much I dislike the looks of my appallingly generic, completely unmodifiable character. He could be any off-the-shelf, adolescent, vaguely androgynous Made In Japan™ protagonist from any game. He doesn't even wear samurai armor or anything that makes him look like he particularly belongs in the setting; with his costume he would be right at home in the most derivative of undistinguished third-rate RPGs. Every single battle I get to spend part of my time controlling dudes who are infinitely cooler and more badass, but at the end of each one I must bid them a sad farewell and trudge onward in the persona of my cookie-cutter Final Fantasy-reject samurai boy toy.
Not that I don't enjoy hacking through swaths of mans, but when I set the game down I just end up feeling like I would rather finally plunk down the dough for Shogun: Total War 2, and I hate RTSes. Either that, or watch a Kurosawa movie.
1. Is it me or is the volume really, really low in this game, even with headphones on? I've played the console version with headphones before, and this isn't even half as loud when cranked to the max.
2. The delay with Ultras is pretty distracting. Strangely enough, the time between KO and the opponent falling has been sped up. A weird trade-off.
3. Is there a particular reason the backgrounds are static? Was it due to system limitations, or were they afraid it would cause too much eye-strain? It's not a big deal save for the Africa level, which has a hippo stupidly frozen in O face.
4. Online simply does not work, at least for the time I've tested it; even Arcade Request has resulted in time-outs and slideshow lag. Only tested briefly, so I'm unsure how it stands right now.
Those quips aside, the game is solid, and gives a good idea of how the 3DS can handle 3D.
The easiest way anyone could have described how the 3DS looks is by comparing it to looking at fish in an aquarium. Anyone ever make that comparison?
And while I tend to hate leaving fingerprints on the touchscreen, the shortcut buttons work quite well. Almost feels like a cheat being able to pull off Akuma's Ultra whenever you want, but it's not like the game is meant for serious competitive play.
That said, I'm curious if any tournaments will feature it, because the livestream meltdowns would be hilarious.
1. Is it me or is the volume really, really low in this game, even with headphones on? I've played the console version with headphones before, and this isn't even half as loud when cranked to the max.
Everything is completely audible and satisfactory for me even through the speakers. I'm not sure why you would expect the 3DS to have the same sound capabilities as a full-size console, though, that may not be entirely fair.
4. Online simply does not work, at least for the time I've tested it; even Arcade Request has resulted in time-outs and slideshow lag.
I do think the 3DS is relatively quiet. I can turn the volume all the way up with headphones and it's actually what I'd call a reasonable gaming volume, not to the point of almost hurting my ears as is the case with every other electronic device turned up to the max. But regular DS games are just as loud as they were on the DS...
I've got Ridge Racer now. It's fun, I have to wrap my head around its gameplay, but for now I can still win races while slamming into walls. I would say RR is a pretty strong case that 3D does not provide "free antialiasing" to any noticeable degree, it's quite jaggy whether 3D or not. Still a pretty game with an awesome 3D effect. And the best part of the whole package is the music.
But as I play other 3DS games I keep thinking to myself "I could be playing Ghost Recon instead right now," so I quit out and pop it back in. I might be around the halfway point by now and it's still really enjoyable.
So far, I have to say that Pilotwings is my least favorite of the games I've tried so far. Not a lot of content, and the 3D really is too much in it. The effect is handled in Samurai Warriors and Ghost Recon MUCH better. Even turned down to a comfortable setting, Pilotwings is just kind of hard to focus on, whereas other games can be crystal clear with it on full.
Enough good things about Ghost Recon can't be said. It's just plain awesome, and the 3D is just icing on the cake. Though I was a little sad when I ran my battery down going through a mission and I lost my progress. The battery life on this thing is really short. Though admittedly this was with full 3D, full brightness, and wifi on.
I've also tried a bit of Rayman, and 3D aside, the only thing I can really say about it is that it's... well... and old game.
I really, really hope that Nintendo eventually adds a way to challenge friends to games.
Hell, I don't even need chat capabilities, really. I'd settle for the ability to easily search my friends list playing the same game I am, and being able to "poke" them with a generic "ChopperDave challenged you to a game of SSF4!" or whatever.
It's my one major complaint with the system so far... well, that and the shitty camera lenses.

3D aside, I'd say Ridge Racer's graphics are somewhere sub-Dreamcast level. Still a fun game, but it looks poor even in comparison to the other racing launch title, Asphalt 3D (which as far as I can tell not a single person here has bothered with).
My pet peeve with RR is the way the AI opponents always qualify and run in the exact same order.

Agreed here. Regular DS games through the 3DS are still pretty loud, but 3DS titles are quiet.
I'm going to be really happy when I finally lose my habit of trying to pause by moving my button-finger straight down. This is the third time I've lost my progress in ghost recon by hitting the power button when I meant to hit start.
Well, after my first full day of really using the system, I wasn't even able to eke out 3 and a half hours on the thing before going down to "flashing orange" and having to charge. Big disappointment. I have it on Brightness 4 and power-saving on, and I ended up turning the system on at around 8 a.m. and just keeping the system in sleep mode when I wasn't playing. I did do a fair amount of online play today, but I was hoping to get to the point where I could play and not have to charge until I was done for the night, but I had to go grab the charger to get in more SSFIV time.
I'm hoping that Nyko battery solution works out and tests okay; I'll gladly sacrifice a bit of bulk for solid play time without having to worry about bringing my charger to school for the day if I'm on campus (I'm a GA, end up idling on campus a lot). I'll try going down to Brightness 3 tomorrow and seeing if I fare any better.
4. [SSFIV] Online simply does not work, at least for the time I've tested it; even Arcade Request has resulted in time-outs and slideshow lag. Only tested briefly, so I'm unsure how it stands right now.
I think their servers might be getting hammered now as more people are getting the game; I tried to play a little today, ran into one really laggy game, and just a while ago tried but couldn't even get online (though that may have been something with my router). But I was playing yesterday and last night for about an hour online, and aside from a few hitches it ran amazingly smooth and with minimal lag. I wish we could get 60 FPS online, but I'm guessing the lower framerate is to hide some of the lag issues.
I think I'm using the term right (the last fighter I played semi-seriously was Tekken 3!); it's when you chain certain moves/attacks together so that you interrupt the animation of the first attack in order to start the second. The combos in the Challenge mode train you for certain ones unique to each character. I think it's one of those fighting-game quirks that started as a bug but has since been incorporated into the game.

Yeah. There's no two ways around it. The battery life is absolutely dire and I'm looking into the Nyko solution as well. I'm sitting at Brightness 2 right now with power-saving on.
Today I noticed very fine marks on the top screen that appear to be from contact with frame of the lower screen. I wiped the top screen with a good cloth and they disappeared, but I'm fairly certain they will turn into actual scratches with time.
I've basically decided that a screen protector for the top screen is mandatory. Pretty disappointed with Nintendo. I mean how do you not notice that the top screen is scratched by the bottom screen during testing?
Australia's got it! Or, at least, I have it. Schwing!
Sweet, glad you guys didn't have to wait too long.
I haven't been on the forums for awhile because apparently it has been very busy lately. Hopefully the WiFi on the 3DS has been more dependable then being able to post on here the last day or two!
The Amazon deal is kind of goofy. You have to wait until it ships to get the $25 credit on a launch game and the free accessory. That should be locked into the order from the start. I am going for Steel Diver. I already have SSF4 on the 360.
Road Rash is very arcady if wer're going old school.
If Acclaim is still around (I'm honestly not sure if they are) they should bring back Extreme G just for the 3DS. A game from that series would be fucking amazing in 3D on a system like this.

To be fair the wait for Australia was just for late-night shopping, which is where 95% of games get released anyway.
Going to pick mine up tonight, I hope the black screen issues don't become a concern.
