i thought people were overreacting and this only happened to people who put their 3ds' in pockets or cases that were too tight, but my 3 day old 3ds, which has never been in either, has developed permanent smudge/scratches on the top screen from the touch screen edges hitting it when it's closed..wtf nintendo how does this get through testing/qc?
Today I noticed very fine marks on the top screen that appear to be from contact with frame of the lower screen. I wiped the top screen with a good cloth and they disappeared, but I'm fairly certain they will turn into actual scratches with time.
I've basically decided that a screen protector for the top screen is mandatory. Pretty disappointed with Nintendo. I mean how do you not notice that the top screen is scratched by the bottom screen during testing?
I noticed the same thing, sadly. I tried cramming the 3DS into a DSi case, and when I pulled it out there was a distinct 3-line marking on the top screen. Faint, but I wonder if putting a screen protector on the top would interfere with the 3D at all.

Alright, played around with mine (although with barely minimal 3D since it's nearly 11 at night here), and I'm enjoying it so far. That sample video is very pretty and a great example of the 3D.
Street Fighter is really nice (although while I understand the basics it's going to be a while before I get the hang of it again, especially on a new console), I'll probably try Ghost Recon tomorrow.
I think there may be a dead pixel or two already, but I'll live with it, since the same thing happened to the new DS Lite I bought not too long ago (I'll just convince myself it's a speck of dirt).
And the wi-fi works great, in of spite the crazy distance I am from the router.

Faint, but I wonder if putting a screen protector on the top would interfere with the 3D at all.
Nope! Unless you put something over the screen that non-uniformly distorts the screen (like if it's thicker in one area than another), there should be no effect.
It's interesting that they designed the clamshell the way they did, because it seems like an obvious flaw. The outer rim of the top half should be what provides the space between the two, and then the rubber stoppers should just soften the impact of closing. But you can plainly see that the rim isn't thick enough to keep the screens from touching, and only the super-flexible stoppers are preventing it. So just a small amount of pressure is enough to make them press against each other.

It's kind of ass, really—I thought that whole Iwata Asks justifying the hardware design in intricate detail would have accounted for something as obvious as "screens will mark each other up if you apply pressure." I'm just going to have to baby it for the time being and then try to pick up some screen protectors. Good to hear it won't affect the 3D. I don't know how the tech works so I've been nervous to even brush away smudges and stuff on the top screen!
That doesn't sound "interesting" so much as "No redesign at all, huh? Right.".
Anyone who thinks there won't be a redesign/reiteration (be it a Lite or XL or something parallel) is lying to him/herself. That said, I don't really see one coming for at least 18-24 months. Something pegged for holiday 2012, or maybe the spring afterward (DSi, DSi XL and now 3DS have all been March/April releases in the U.S.).
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a redisign by Christmas. I'll stick with my launch day 3DS and will not likely upgrade until the next gen, just as I did with the first DS.

We might get an XL version, but I doubt we'll be getting a Lite version anytime soon. While the 3DS is not the best design out there, it doesn't have the glaring problems the GBA and DS Phat had originally.
Caved in and bought a aqua blue 3ds, a carry case and SSIV. It's so fricking pretty and shiny. The battery is as bad as I've heard but at least it comes with a bitching charging crandle. And in terms of value I probably could have gotten a better deal if I bought it all a bundle but that's what I get for being an impatient dumbass. Still, $288 for the console alone is a lot better than the RRP here in AUS.
Maybe an obvious point, but the battery life is greatly improved if you switch off wireless and set the brightness to 3 (or even 4) rather than 5 - it's the touch button on the top left of the home screen. There's also a 'low power' mode on the same options screen that red-shifts the colours slightly - haven't really tried that out though.
The marks on the upper screen wipe off for me without the slightest issue. I kind of doubt that they're permanent--that would make so sense. How do you get a scratch without some sort of directional movement when the ridges aren't even remotely sharp?

I noticed that myself. I've been playing for at least 3 hours at a time after having had it in sleep mode for the whole day at work with the brightness at 4 and wifi off (seems kind of pointless to have it on with little to no network functionality at this time), and keep thinking, shouldn't the low battery light be on by now?

So what is the point of the charging cradle? I don't really get this. You can plug the charger into the cradle or the 3DS itself, it seems to be exactly the same. Except it's more annoying to fit the 3DS on that cradle than it is to fit the plug in the hole. So why?
I thought maybe the cradle would hold a charge so you can be without a charger at times but this doesn't seem to be the case
The cradle is so much easier than struggling to find that damn hole (heh) especially in the dark. At least for me, you must have monster hands to struggle with the cradle.

The 3DS has to fit in that stupid little notch on the cradle to charge. It's way harder to line that up than plug the cord into the back of the unit.

You might be over-thinking it. Put the front of the 3DS in first, then drop the back in. Honestly, it lines up so easily that I accidentally dropped it on the thing without lining it up and it still fell into place.
Edit: Alternatively, perhaps you got a bad cradle. Upon further inspection of my cradle, it seems almost impossible for me to plop the 3DS on and not have it line up and charge correctly unless I put it in backwards or something.

I'm sure Nintendo has some so super secret LCD material that doesn't scratch like every other LCD on the market.

This is my experience too. I actually can't get it to sit in the cradle without charging. Tried just now.

Hey, sweet, I got my first Street Pass today! Looks like another early adopter named Brett passed by my work this morning, if the time signature is correct. That's so cool.
Time to go and put Brett to work as the general of my cat army...
edit: Haha! I just realized that you can choose whether you like cats or dogs better in the StreetPass plaza. If you choose dogs, your hired grunts have dog heads rather than cats.

I managed to fail the night I brought it home. I got up in the morning, all ready to continue playing, and as I touched the unit it just went *click*, shifted slightly, and the charge light came on
But yeah, it's not something that you can struggle with once you know where it goes.
Does your heroes disappear if you enter Streetpass Quest, but don't enter the dungeon? I had a Streetpass hit, but the guy disappeared from Steetpass Quest after I had checked that he was available. Or do you have to choose if you want to use Miis for the quest or the puzzle?
I used 20 Play coins on puzzle pieces. 4 of the 10 pieces were duplicates.

I don't know, I always struggle with it. It's not that it's hard, it just takes a few extra seconds to find the right position. It's always just easier/faster for me to plug the thing in directly.
One thing I will give to Pilotwings is that it really demonstrates how fantastic the analog slider (slide pad? what are we calling it?) really is—it has just the right amount of tension and pull to it, so when you're hang-gliding you can use really subtle degrees of movement to nudge yourself one way or the other.
Really? I don't hear anything particularly American about it. It's typical action game/movie score stuff, but pretty good quality.
I think he means patriotic in the kind of "dudebro Tom Clancy generic action hero" way, which so far I can kind of see. But I also think that it's pretty good, quality-wise. The 3D really is fantastic in Ghost Recon; I might like it the most out of the other games I have (Pilotwings and SSFIV), though oddly, the most wonderful use of 3D for me is in the menu icons. The Mii Maker and Mii Plaza ones are really stunning.
I'm sure Nintendo has some so super secret LCD material that doesn't scratch like every other LCD on the market.
It's called Gorilla Glass and they use it on iPhones. It's not perfect, but it is damn good.
I've been messing around with my DS titles so far with it. The 3 Etrigan Odyssey games all look...right. The images scale really well. Pokemon White looks, good. Infinante Space and Suikoden Trikrisis are the only ones gives me issues...and they are minor.

Yeah, that looks to be the case. I checked on my new friend Brett and got his puzzle piece, then closed out of Street Pass Plaza to do something else. When I reopened Street Pass Plaza and went into Find Mii, a sword-wielding Brett was not where to be found.
So it looks like if you get a successful street pass and open Street Pass Plaza, you need to be sure to get both your puzzle piece AND run a game of Find Mii before you close out. Use it or lose it, I guess. Kinda lame...
Also, if you hire cats/dogs you have to use them immediately, or you lose them too. Lost a few coins that way today, bleh.

Just got my 3DS last night and put my Friend Code in the list on the main page, which by the way is awesome. I only added a few peeps, but will add more tonight. Code is also behind the spoiler in my Sig.
First impressions of it: The SSFIV's 3D is 10x better than the built in games 3D. Much easier to focus on, and seemingly "cleaner". But even the built in games were more than interesting and quite fun to screw around with. I appreciate having content on a system like this when I only have enough money to buy one game for a while after dropping a good amount of cash on the system itself.

As someone who's never played Rayman 2 before, I'm really enjoying the 3DS version.
Steel Diver and Pilotwings are really pretty good. SSF IV and Shadow Wars are the best value. RR looks like shit but plays really well. Lego isn't bad. Nintendogs is adorable.

Honestly, I prefer character-driven TBS than story-driven, although best of all is Fire Emblem where you just combine the two.
