Cornel West is a public intellectual, an extremist for love, and a radical for justice. He grew up in Sacramento in the 60s and thrived in civil rights demonstrations. He is a professor at Princeton and speaks at universities across the US with messages of love and hope.
He accents his background and his traditions, with as much pride in his jazz and blues style as his Christianity. He is a "jesus-lovin' black man" with both razor-sharp intellect and a deep love for human life.
Here he talks with Craig Ferguson. When talking with someone, West often has interest in their life and where they came from--he brings up Ferguson's Scottish background and even mentions Ferguson's memoir when his is the one being showcased. (This clip also does great credit to Ferguson, a comic with a genuine interest in the work of his guests.)

West's reference level is through the roof; he's as likely to cite jazz, blues, or theater as philosophy or the legacy of MLK. West is fond of social media as an instrument, often promoting public thought as much as promoting his own travels and talks.
We live in the age of the catastrophic, catatonic and catalytic. The catastrophes in Japan and the heroic response of our Japanese brothers and sisters even when their government does not tell them the full truth; the catastrophic conditions of poor and working people in the USA and around the world, and the heroic responses of everyday people in Madison, WI, Columbus, OH, Arizona, and especially Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain and Yemen. The age of the catatonic -- massive sleep walking among the poor and working class -- is over. The major catalyst of our time is everyday people taking a courageous stand in the face of misfortune and injustice. What a wonderful time to be alive!
He also has a slick fashion sense. He radiates love in this clip even as he's being filmed by pretentious film students.

No matter where this thread turns--more sweet clips from West's work or from similar intellectuals, or to broader political speculation--I challenge you to talk to people with the values that West champions, to make your posts with courage and love.

I am Maizel East
It also doesn't hurt that he is one of the few individuals who can completely overshadow & destroy Stephen Colbert in an interview.
PARKER, YOU'RE FIRED! <-- My comic book podcast! Satan look here!
The coolest.
These videos are goin' on Facebook, because I have friends I know would appreciate this
it is possible for a static shot to be interesting bro
and it has the advantage of not making me throw up
I love the highest rated comment, all like "uh was this filmed by a cat"
I can't say I care about your unrelated shots of an owl or random books. Let Cornel West do his own thing and it will be interesting regardless of how it's shot.
I want to read about Cornel West chilling with Socrates and Space Pope.

I've figured out who and what I want to be.
Fuck yeah
And back to lurking.
West has hardly produced any work that will earn him a place in the wider canon of Western philosophy, but I should certainly agree that he's an affable enough fellow.
Oh that first point I would agree with but where the current market is for contemporary, American philosophers I'd say there are hardly any others who could compete against Cornel West for his identity within American philosophy.

That makes me sad.
What spring does with the cherry trees.
I love this man
he resembles a very intelligent bear
It's like looking through the eyes of a drunkass anaconda.

He is not a creationist asshole?
What I like so much is that he is extremely grounded in values rather than dogma
He has so much love and warmth for all human life, and I think it's really genuine in the way he talks to people and the ideas he shares. He really does believe that all human life is precious and I think that that kind of love is sorely lacking in public figures typically
