Apart from a couple scores, in general I'm not a fan of Zimmer and especially not a fan of what he's changed the typical film score sound into.
John Williams will always be my top composer but I'll make a bigger post laster with my general favs
You guys know that Williams scored an Altman movie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYppv9Ht64s
That's one of the tame tracks but most of it is really crazy and weird. He scored it by looking at sculptures and not the actual movie.
I appreciate what Zimmer and his company do, which is promote a collaborative work environment where many young and sometimes inexperienced composers can work on big movies, but at the same time that doesn't always result in good music

I'm gonna keep myself posting a ton of anime musics
But since Yoko Kanno and Turn A were mentioned already (and since I finished the show on Supermoon Night) here we go
Okay, maybe just one more. You know what sci-fi anime had a really sweet, likely overlooked, excellent soundtrack? Gunbusterrr
It was pretty damn good! The advertising makes it out to be a lot more crass and all about Paul flashing people. While there is some very creative cursing, it's a really sweet movie that actually has a lot of heart to it. It kinda had a Spielberg-y friendship feel to it, fitting since he makes a cameo.
I'm still super bummed that Michael Kamen isn't with us anymore. He really was a great composer (Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, X-Men, among many others) who absolutely loved what he did. I mean, look at this interview.
I think there's something like 60 some trailers between the three of them these songs have been used in and god knows how many other oscar montages and tributes etc.

wolf's rain had some great stuff too
yeah, Zimmer just Zimmer-fies everything he touches.
Also kind of annoying that he gets sole credit for scores he barely works on.
Yeah, it did.
It's next on my list.
But the greatest movie composer is John Williams.
There is no contest.
