Hey, I know elvish! I will chalk it up to lots of reading. I'm assuming I can't speak it very well, but...
Alise's jaw drops a few inches as she takes in the sight. So there really was such a place... she thought to herself as they walked further into the city. Upon being teleported (again), she couldn't help but wonder how much arcane energy this place used up, considering that it had taken Enthrexa a considerable amount of energy to get them all out of the mountains.
Elvish wasn't a common language back home, but books could teach you anything...and now was as good a time to make use of that education as ever. "A pleasure to meet you, Talansi," she says in broken Elvish, greeting their new host. "Please forgive my accent. I've spent some time studying the language, but practice is hard to come by when you're constantly fearing for your life."
Deciding that she's spent enough time making a fool of herself, she switches back to the common tongue. "Is the guard for our protection or your people's? We are hardly the types to go rampaging about the city. Still though, my companions and I thank you for your hospitality," she concludes. All these formalities were giving her a headache. If they wanted to achieve their goal though, she would have to be as...gracious as possible. Which, she hoped, didn't include falling over her face to do their bidding. The guard had seemed to appreciate her candor earlier, but that did not necessarily mean anything here. Either way it seemed that as the sole user of arcana, she was elected the unofficial spokesman for now. She just hoped that her companions would find a way to let her know if they did not approve of anything she was doing. Maybe if Enthrexa could telepathically talk to everyone...

As Talansi begins to talk in flowing Elvish, the dog to his side takes a step forward.
"My master wishes you to know that my presence is both for your safety and his." it speaks in common, a rough, growling tone that is in line with it's large stature. "The Master welcomes you to his house and he hopes that you find comfort knowing that a guard will benefit both parties." The dog continued.
"I am Herod; your guard and translator."

Shen blinks twice, almost losing the tough exterior he's been putting on for a look of pure wonder. A talking dog huh? Probably a druid in beast form, but still, its enough to catch you off guard. He'll have to keep an eye on this one.

For the second time today, Alise stood dumbfounded. Talking dog. What? Recollecting herself, she responded, "Well, it was more to make a point that there is nothing to fear about us. But thank you, Herod." Before she could help herself, she blurted out, "You aren't really a dog, right? Not that it's a problem, it's just..." her voiced trailed off, and under her breath she muttered, "talking dog..."

"I am as the master directs. Today I am a... talking dog, yes." Herod responded in common, resisting the urge to comment further. His master did not like it when he was not as directed. A Guard dog fitted the role and while he was in the masters house, it would remain so. Looking to his master, he translated the comments of the guests and then awaited for his command.
Always waiting for direction.

The revenant remained silent as they finished journeyed towards the city. Having been killed and raised from the dead nothing much startled Persecutus or gave him pause. However, when they reached the city itself he stopped momentarily to gaze up at the buildings before him. If the concept of 'awe' was dead to him, he still held a healthy respect for the architecture of the place.
Seeing that the rest of the group continued on he doubled his pace to catch back up, reaching the main group as they come to Talansi and Herod.
Persecutus turned his attention from the fey to the large speaking canine, bowing slightly to the dog before speaking himself. His voice was deep and powerful without a hint of surprise at the turn of events.
"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Herod. I am Persecutus. I require neither food nor sleep. Am I permitted to walk in the city this night?"

Riishi hung back, trying to balance competing impulses within her. Awe and excitement had bubbled since entering the city, and now amazement, caution, eager playfulness (big doggie!) and concern threatened to swamp her equilibrium. Still unsure of her party’s position with Talansi and trusting Alise’s poise, Riishi remained rooted. Seeing the big dog flushed countless questions into her mind, and reminded her that Cherka had made itself scarce since entering the Eladrin territory. But just what—or who—was Herod?
Talansi responded with a flow of Elvish, and Herod perked his ears up.
"My master wishes me to escort you to your chambers, where you will rest and refresh yourselves for morning. He will meet with you then. Until then, I may answer any questions you might have about myself or the city. Unfortunately, you may not travel the city at nightfall. It would be dangerous for you. In the morning, I will take you on a tour for my master."
Herod walks in front of you and you follow to a beautiful apartment. It is lushly furnished and features two bedrooms with doorways covered in fine tapestry, a common room, and a wash room where water magically pours eternally into a basin and then dries up just as quickly. Herod sits carefully at the door out of the apartment. It is clear that no one will enter or exit that he does not permit.
Riishi:
This dog doesn't feel right to you, but you can't pinpoint why. It's just not a dog, even though it appears to be one.

"Nice digs. Which room would the ladies like? I'm sure Persecutus and I can live with the other. Unless of course you have other plans." Shen looks around the room, slightly suspicious of such excellent accommodations. The last line is thrown out completely deadpan, as if any implications made upon it would be only from the person making them, certainly not Shen the innocent angel. "So, who wants the bath first?"
Shen makes a passive perception 20 as he moves around the room.
Persecutus looks as disappointed as someone lacking muscle tone in their facial features can be at being restricted to the apartment, but makes no complaint. Following the rest of the group into their accommodations he quickly looks around for possible entry points, then pulls a chair into the common room facing the door and sits down.
He fixes his unblinking gaze on the doorway and waits for morning with the patience of one for whom time does not tick away.

“Alise, you can go first,” offers Riishi, moving slowly about the common room. She’s never before been in a room like this—the luxurious fabrics and ornately carved embellishments are nearly as magical to her as the obvious enchantments. Admiring the soft cushions, she decides to clean up before she sullies them with her dusty clothes. After a slow look up towards the window, her tour of the room brings her around to Herod, before whom she sits cross-legged on the floor.
Looking up at him, she commands through a broad smile “Herod—speak!” and immediately knocks herself sideways with laughter. Quickly righting herself, though still chuckling, Riishi reaches up to scratch his broad chest apologetically. “Have you been in the city long, Herod, since puppydom? And I sense you’re using the term “Master” without whole-hearted love and devotion, am I reading that right?”
Is there a window? Passive Perc = 20, if so.

Herod lowers his head as the woman before him laughs. It was not unheard of for him to have the Masters friends and partners mock him for being a talking dog. To many it was a point of conversation. It hurt less now; at least he was thankful for that. The moment she touched him on his chest however, he seemed to take a step back and bear his teeth momentarily before righting himself and lowering his head again. He was unused to people touching him to show affection and scalding himself internally, he made sure to avoid eye contact with the master’s guest.
“The master is… just the master. He has been so for as long as I can remember.” Herod replied, hoping to avoid the usual repercussions of baring his teeth by answering her questions quickly. “I have been able to walk through the city on the Masters business so I am able to show you most of the sights, but a majority of the time I am here at the estate. Please forgive me if I cannot show you anything more subtle than the popular drinking establishments or the local Games Pit.”
You may notice that where Herod’s fur has moved aside on his chest, there is a large red mark under the fur. Almost like a tattoo.

There does not appear to be anything untoward about this room. There are no windows. Instead, the filigree in one of the walls is cutout and a sweet breeze occasionally blows the curtains slightly.

As Herod jumped back, Riishi did the same, chastened. She had meant no offense, and was embarrassed to have caused any to her host. With an effort to be polite, she resumed her seat, out of reach of Herod this time, and clasped her hands before her, in plain sight.
“The estate? What is this place, anyway? We were guided only by legends and Alise’s readings,” she explained.
Dani: What would I roll to learn more about Herod's "tattoo"? Is it an Arcane mark?

“The city has been here for generations, or so I am told. The Master is a noble here and as such owns property.” Herod replied, a little shocked that the woman before him seemed just as taken aback. His curiosity only pushed him forward but he kept his eyes down.
“The Master has told me about how the city has seen many rulers. The Fey empire which controls it now proving to be more powerful than it’s previous owners. I have heard tale that Dragons and then the Dragonborn also held government before then, but I am ill-educated in such matters.” he admitted.
“As to how it differs from your land, I could not say, nor how you were unable to find it without guidance. I happened upon this land by chance during my... puppydom, as you put it.” Herod concluded.

"Thanks, Riishi," Alise responds simply, already on her way in. Waiting for the bath to fill, she disrobes and takes a look at herself in the mirror. Damn, she had a lot more scars than she used to. Spells and healing could only do so much. There were some parts of her skin that still had little craters, a direct result from the acid bath she had received in the tower. She shuddered as she recollected how close to death she had been. That was the last time she got so close in battle, she decided.
Slipping into the bath, she sighed contentedly. Finally, a chance to relax. Taking a few minutes to simply let all the dirt soak off of her, she focused her mind, noting all the different arcane signatures. The eternal bath, the lighting, the whole city was seeping in magical power. There was so much noise, so difficult to focus on one thing. Suddenly she remembered the gem they had snagged. There was so much to see that she had forgotten about it. Enthrexa, is a..piece of you here, in the city, somewhere? she inquired. And are you familiar with this place at all? We are getting the grand tour tomorrow, but inside knowledge never hurts.
Not hearing an immediate response, she leaned back and sighed again, reveling in the relaxing luxury they suddenly found themselves in, and soaking in the 'sounds' of all the magic surrounding her. She didn't know how long she would be able to experience this, but she would make as much of it as she could.
The city fairly pulses with arcane energy. You can feel individual signatures, but the background level is so high it all but drowns out powerful magic users. Everything is almost permeated with the sound and smell and feel of magic. It is an electrifying feeling.
You nearly jump as Enthrexa speaks up in your head: I have been concentrating on locating my essence. I think I have found it. But it is surrounded by powerful wards. I am not familiar with this location but some arcane signatures are known to me-
Hmmm...
Little mage, there might be some problems with the essence that is here. It might be a very difficult part of me.
You see, I am intellect. But the shard that is here...I'm afraid that it is strength. And it is angry. Now I know why the Emperor (may he be struck from the earth) retains it. It is very powerful, but very dangerous. Even now I can feel it calling for reunion. And vengeance.
mightyjongyoSour CrrmEast Bay, CaliforniaRegistered Userregular
Alise mused over Enthrexa's response as she finished her bath. It might be better to leave it alone for now...it sounded like it would be a pain in the ass to get that away from the emperor, and if the two pieces...fused? she wasn't sure how that all worked, but if that happened, who knew what Enthrexa would do next. And to whom.
"Sorry for the wait, you can go next, Riishi" Alise says, plopping down on one of the beds. Sounds like fun... For some reason I don't think the Emperor will just give it away. I'll talk it over with the others tomorrow... the thought trails off as she drifted off to sleep, exhausted by the day's travels and the sights.

Herod took the opportunity to cut off any questions about the mark she had spotted after her friend had come back inform her brief bath.
“I will answer any further questions in the morning. Until then you should sleep as I am sure you will wish to see more of this city on the Morrow.” He added then stood, padding over to the door and looking over his shoulder, he bowed his head.
“I will be outside should you need me.”
Moving out of the doorway, he rounded the frame and lay down next to the door. He would sleep for now it seemed, but years of his position had trained him to keep one ear up for the calls of his master or his guests. He would sleep lightly tonight in case he was needed. The cold stone floor of the hallway seemed quiet and almost comforting now.
Herod doubted it would last very long.

Not one for soaking, Riishi bathed quickly, happy to scrub away the smeared combination of dust, dirt, mud, muck, sweat and blood that seemed to encase her. Having dried and wrapped herself with the puffiest cloths she had ever felt, she next subjected her traveling clothes to a similar regimen. Once these were spread on the provided racks to dry, she unrolled soft linen breeches and blouse from her pack to wear for the evening. Her leathers would be mostly dry by morning.
Returning to the main room, Riishi collected a snack from the table, with a cup of tea that steamed, even though the pot had no fire beneath it, and finally enjoyed the sumptuously padded furniture.
“Well,” she began softly, “What do you think?” she asked Shen and Persecutus, sleep beginning to soften the edge of her voice.

"I think...I think it is time for my bath. Yes, it has been way too long." Of course Shen couldn't say what he was really thinking, that would be rude, presumptuous, and perhaps raise the ire of the other "men" in the room. What he did say was true, however. It has been waaaay too long since Shen had a proper bath, and doing so would not at all dull his "rustic charm", quite contrary, it should only serve to create the even more monstrous "dashing good looks with that rough edge you can't look away from", well...this was what Shen hopped anyway. "Don't wait up for me. I'll be a moment here."

Eyelids heavy, Riishi agreed that she should not "wait up," and found her way to the room she shared with Alise. Wrapping herself in the softest blanket imaginable, she crashed into slumber.
Persecutus did not seem to take any notice of the various activities that were being performed around him, sitting stone-faced and still before the door.
Shen, scrubbed, clean-shaven, and looking like a handsome rogue instead of a scruffy woodsman, walked straight past the not-quite-alive man and fell face-first on the mattress. He was soon snoring softly.
...
Light streamed in through the cut-outs in the walls and Persecutus detected signs of people moving around outside, strange foreign voices muffled. Soft footsteps padded to the door and a growling voice interrogated a quiet lilting one. The curtain brushed aside and the giant doggie accompanied a beautiful young woman into the room. She looked more human than Talansi, but still foreign with longer ears and a shorter, very thin frame. On one of her arms was branded a symbol that Persecutus didn't recognize. Alise would have known her as an elf. She carried a flask of water, fruit, and sweet bread, which she set on a small low table in the common area. She bowed, wide-eyed, and then walked backward out of the room.
Herod sat very still and waited until everyone woke up and began eating. The group was very quiet, sleepy-eyed still, but looking quite refreshed. The room was even more magnificent in the daylight. Gold lettering on the walls in elvish shone in the morning light. Silver and white tiles on the floor cooled the feet and red and blue tapestries lined the interior walls and the floor. The table was ornately carved out of a rich reddish wood and the tray containing the fruit was of silver. The fruit on it was unusual but delicious. The group sat on embroidered pillows on the floor to eat. Herod left for a little time, then came back and sat apart from them, and as they were eating talked about his master and what they would do during the day.
"My master wishes me to bid you good morning. Today he wishes you to accompany me on a tour of the city while he completes his work. In the afternoon he will meet with you and discuss your occasion for coming here and your needs."
"My master is one of the great magi and viziers of the Emperor. You have been very lucky that you meet with the border patrol that you did. Others would have shot you on sight. However, my master's son knew that you were special and was very smart in bringing you to my master. If you have any questions regarding my master I will answer as best I can."

"I just wanna know when we get to start this tour. Be nice to see more of the...city." Shen's pause before the last word is meant to convey every intent of not paying any attention to this city, and every bit of it to its inhabitants of the feminine persuasion. Being an elven city that is over half the men too, he chuckles to himself.

Riishi quickly wipes her mouth. Garbling "I'll get dressed" around her last mouthful, she disappears into the next room. Almost immediately she swings back around the corner in full traveling kit again.
"Should I bring this?" she asks Herod, gesturing with her long spear (causing Shen to duck to save his ear).
Persecutus rises from the chair as the rest of the group begins to make ready. Not having much to do he stands near the doorway and keeps watch. Once everyone is together he begins to reach down for his axe and shield, but as soon as he hears Herrod's response to Riishi he stops, then straightens back up while leaving his weapons on the ground.
Yes, let us see more of your city, Herrod.

“As you desire.”
Herod spoke, bowing his head in acknowledgement of the request and turning to the door, waiting at the threshold for the group of guests to get ready. When everyone was gathered, he would lead them out of the room and out towards one of the teleporting platforms to take them into the city proper.
“Do you have a preference to our first destination?” Herod asks flatly, his eyes still forward. It is fairly obvious that this is not the first time he has had to play tour guide. “I can show you areas of historical value or perhaps you are craving something a touch more-” his eyes briefly move to Shen, “-carnal.”

Riishi had intended to let someone more urbane steer their tour, but seeing Shen about to respond to Herod's gambit, she injected "Historical", perhaps a smidge too loudly. Riishi's face also seemed more boldly pink than usual, but that was probably a trick of the morning sun.

"Yes, let us see what the fine city has to offer in the way of history, art, and the finer things. I'm sure the others can wait for the less...public...attractions." Shen doesn't miss a beat, passing off the interjection as if he was about to make it himself. Smiling sweetly he winks at Riishi as he passes the blame of naughty thoughts to the rest of the group.

Herod was glad he the rest of the group could not see him rolling his eyes.
“Historical it is. We have many sights as well as libraries. If you are interested in martial pursuits, the hall of Champions as well as the arena may well be of your liking.” Herod mentioned, although he was loathe in doing it.
He knew of the Pits from personal experience and it was not a place he readily wanted to visit, but the hall of Champions always seemed to give him hope. The lines of statues and imagery were colorful and reminded him that there was more to life than the smell of blood or the taste of flesh. Perhaps one day he would be strong enough to free himself like some of the figures standing in the great hall.
Turning his head to look at the pink Riishi and pausing to address her, he asks;
“What interests you?”
His question did not imply anything than a general query, but seeing as she had been the only one who had shown any kind of personable mentality, he wanted to ask her as a form of repayment. He would take her request above the others for that.

Riishi’s pale blush deepens as the focus returns to her. “Hi- Historical?” she hisses drily, looking vainly for help from Alise, who hasn’t returned from the other room. Quickly scanning her mind, Riishi recalls their purpose here, and curiosity renews her natural confidence.
“You said dragons used to rule here; do you have artifacts of that era?”

Herod looked at the female for a moment before nodding. The only knowledge he had of the Dragons were the stories of how they were crumpled under the boot of the fey. There was a museum dedicated to the wars the fey had made against the dragons, celebrating their own victory, but for some reason he didn’t think the female wanted to see that.
“I know of a place.” He said simply as he looked forward again and continued to move on. “…as for what you are looking for, I cannot be sure if it will be there… but perhaps it is a good start.” He added, moving onwards towards the teleportation shrines.
“We will start at the Museum of Conquest.”

Suddenly realizing the others were waiting on her, Alise hurried to join them, just in time to catch the end of the discussion. The Museum of Conquest... Alise was getting excited. Finally, she could fill in all the missing gaps in the texts back home! Maybe they had a few books she could study while they were visiting, too. Cheered by the thought, she followed their guide with a spring in her step.

Not taking his eyes from the door, the revenant speaks to noone in particular, especially considering Riishi has already fallen asleep
The furnishings are quite lavish, and I am curious to view the rest of the city tomorrow.

"We can start as soon as you are ready." He replied simply.

"Should I bring this?" she asks Herod, gesturing with her long spear (causing Shen to duck to save his ear).

Yes, let us see more of your city, Herrod.

Turning his head to look at the pink Riishi and pausing to address her, he asks;
“What interests you?”
His question did not imply anything than a general query, but seeing as she had been the only one who had shown any kind of personable mentality, he wanted to ask her as a form of repayment. He would take her request above the others for that.

“You said dragons used to rule here; do you have artifacts of that era?”
“I know of a place.” He said simply as he looked forward again and continued to move on. “…as for what you are looking for, I cannot be sure if it will be there… but perhaps it is a good start.” He added, moving onwards towards the teleportation shrines.
“We will start at the Museum of Conquest.”
