Christmas day I opened a box with a gift card that said Nintendo Wii on it, for $250 from Best Buy. My parents didn't have the grit to track down a Wii during the holiday season, and I obviously couldn't blame them for that. I figured I'd pick one up after the holidays were over.
Now, over a month after Christmas and two months after release, I can only find traces of a wii. Every time I've gone to my best buy, every console is gone. Every controller, every nunchuk, hell, even every component cable. I saw a memory card once. Additionally, salespeople are getting increasingly annoyed when I call and ask if they have any. "NO, we don't have any wiis, and NO, we don't know when we'll be getting any in." You'd think I was trying to rob them instead of trying to buy a high ticket item. Bleh.
When can I realistically expect to ever see these things in stock? It's getting a bit ridiculous.
I still can't, though I have to take a bus ride just to get to a Target/Best Buy area, and having to adhere to that schedule gives me a distinct disadvantage. It's simply amazing how much higher the demand is than the supply even months after release, people would still camp if it would earn them a Wii.

Toys R Us is supposed to be getting them in this weekend. I would say you're looking at early March-mid March before they'll at least become visible. (That meaning you'll see them on a shelf.. briefly.)
That being said Nintendo and the big-box retailers look like they're really milking it, even with the DS Lites, so who knows. They just have to be careful and not blow a chance at getting more people before the next "big thing" comes out.

Amen. I've been trying to find a DS Lite since Christmas. I don't think I've even seen one since November - they just sell out as soon as they hit the shelves.
Nintendo must just be giddy. They have not one but TWO profit-bearing hardware devices that sell as fast as they can be produced. And I wouldn't say they're 'milking it' - it'd be better for them to produce more units and thus sell more units, after all. They just can't make them fast enough.
I've already camped out on 5 seperate occasions, each time barely missing my chance to get a Wii. 27th in line for 26 Wiis on launch day, 8th in line for 6, 1st in line when the shipments don't come in, etc. So I've spent what equates to two fulls days camping. Just a run of really, really bad luck. I'm in my twentys, have a full time job, and go to college, so it makes it hard to compete with the soccer moms, spoiled kids, and eBayers.
I probably could've found one within the past couple of weeks, if it weren't for unexpected doctor and dentist visits, and the obscene amount of money they want.
*shrug* Gave me time to catch up on a few PS2 games. Not to say that it doesn't bother me everyday, since I'm a complete Nintendo fan-boy, but on the bight side I avoided a few of the launch hiccups, and the games don't just disappear after a while. It really ate at me after the first few times camping, but now I'm just finishing up FFXII, and some other PS2 and DS games, so it worked out in the end.
Seriously though, fuck eBay. I thought scalping was illegal. Not only did eBay make it harder for me to find a Wii, but it also prevented me from attending no less than 3 concerts last year. Someone really should do something about that.
Regardless of what I say, I'm still bitter that I don't have a Wii. It's the sense of entitlement that comes when you've bought every Nintendo system at launch.

Screw you kids whose parents camped out to buy one for you. I had to mow so many lawns to get my NES, and I'd be damned if my parents would ever do anything like that. I'm sure you'll enjoy the car they buy for you too. Then you'll grow up and realize you can't do anything for yourself. Kids these days, sheesh

Then again, I went to Target during my lunch break to buy an iron, poked my head in the electronics section, and saw the store was sold out of every single console EXCEPT the PS3.
Because a popular thing that is hard to find spreads even more buzz.
I'm just asking the Nintendo worshipping gods if it's ok to be skeptical... because I know bad thoughts about the company on the PA forums will likely garner much hate.
My grandmother wants a DS and it just seems a bit silly that she can't find one.

Actually no, skepticism of Nintendo is fine. It's just phrases like "Nintendo worshipping gods" that garners hate.
It's kinda like that Nazi meme: the first person who drops the word "fanboy" or something similar instantly loses the argument.
Edit: Note that I didn't attach a company name to fanboy. ANY fanboy accusation makes a discussion stupid.
I just get the vibe that Nintendo loves the rarity so much that they are holding back supply... I mean it's February and there are no DSs in stores?
Every time I hear this, I ask myself one simple question:
"Why the hell would they do that?"
They have nothing to gain. Strangling supply intentionally would be, in essence, trading sure sales now for the possibility of generating a future sales through the 'hype' of continuing to sell out.
No, it's not artificial. People just want the consoles that bad. Might be that they just don't have the production facilities and/or distribution centers to keep up. Which makes sense, considering that said production facilities are quite expensive assets for a company to keep sitting empty, which is what any extra space they had would have been doing for a decade or so, given that Nintnedo hasn't had this kind of across-the-board demand since the SNES days.

Don't be ridiculous. Nintendo makes a profit on every console sold. Intentionally restricting supply three months after launch makes no business sense what so ever, especially when they'd be making that much profit.
This is why I formed the question, and didn't make a statement. Carry on.
I still wish my grandmother could find her DS... I want mine back.

tell your grandma to get in line. I need to replace one the the Nintendo Gods (ha ha) took from me. Probably for not properly worshipping my wii and leaving it at my uncles for a few weeks.
I've been looking since christmas also. Though, I'm not so sure I want one anymore.
I recently played Zelda at a buddy of mines house and I wasn't really impressed. I bet it would be great if you spent a fair amount of time getting into the game but what I saw was kind of unimpressive.
Zelda is a Zelda game. It's awesome, but it's not something you can just show someone and impress them in a short amount of time. It's something you have to play yourself, for a while, and get into the game.
Wii Sports is the kind of game you gotta play if you want to 'experience' the Wii and only have so much time to do so.
Oh, I've played Zelda games before. All the way back to my oldschool gold cartridge for the NES. Then OOT, MM, WW. All of which seemed more impressive.. With maybe the exception of Majoras Mask (which had a cool idea with the time-travelingness).
I just felt that the current Zelda was no-where near upto the hype. Especially considering it's really the only one title I'm interested in at the moment.
I don't think the supply limits are Nintendo's fault at all. I do, however, think a part of why you aren't seeing them is that because retailers insist on having them in their sales fliers they are hoarding them for specific dates. I know a guy at Target told me they hadn't been putting them out for about 2 weeks leading up to the batch that I waited in line for.
I have seen them on shelves 2 times now, but since I got mine I admittedly haven't been looking too far. I have seen the occassional DS Lite however, just this weekend I saw a few pinks ones in a local store.
I think the main reason for the lack of Wiis is that Nintendo are reluctant to invest in extra manufacturing capacity. They are damn conservative like that when it comes to spending money.
They are probably willing to put up with losing out on sales in the short-term so that they don't end up with a glut of products in the long-term or end up with manufacturing facilities that go to waste.
Even if they wholly outsourced the manufacturing to third-parties, there are setup costs that Nintendo would have to pay, and I bet they aren't willing to do so.

It was of course not advertised so the best thing to do is walk in and ask.

It's possible... then again it's possible that the damn things really are that popular.
The January sales figures will be telling. (Probably won't be out for a couple of weeks, though.)

That's because my mom put it in some damn cupboard while cleaning for her precious Superbowl party.
I should punch her or something.

i think they're out of stock again. so i guess timing is everything.
Get a microscope and tweezers.
ba-dump-bump.
They sold 2 million DSLites in a single month at the end of last year, and I think that was just NA too.
I don't think 'holding back' would be at all a good idea, and I seriously doubt they'd be doing it because they "love it."
I think they "love" selling 2 million units in a month more.
