Laptop + 5.1 Surround = ???

A friend of mine just bought a sony VAIO FE31H laptop, and a set of Creative inspire T6100 Speakers, the only Audio out we can find is a headphone socket at the front, and he has, I believe 3 stereo 3.5mm jacks to plug in, one is the central speak + bass, one is the front two speakers, and one is the back two speakers.

One option he came up with is geting a USB soundcard, like one of these. Would this work ok, and are there any other easier/better/cheaper solutions?
thanx

You';d need a soundcard that supports 5.1. I doubt any notebooks have that feature built-in

Those USB EAX units are actually pretty nice, and are the best chance you have for 5.1 support on your laptop.
