Wii VS Xbox Kinect

Currently we have Wii and a Xbox 360 (no Kinect, but Kinect ready). I been browsing the internets for reviews about the Kinect, and how well it functions. Anyone here have one? Love? Hate? Most of the reviews I found is based on presumption in regards to space needed etc. I want to hear from actual experiences.

A few of my main questions:

1) Can other people be in the room while someone is playing? Or will this cause issues? If so, can pets cause issues? We have 2 cats.
2) Distance. Currently I have 6-8ft from TV (58" Plasma) to couch. With about 3ft behind the couch. So we could move it back if necessary.
3) Lighting? I had noticed a few blurbs in online reviews about light from windows. We have a picture window that can be blinding. We usually do close the curtains when gaming. But can that cause issues with the Kinect sensors?

I am ultimately hoping to sell/trade our Wii & Wii Active for a Kinect bar & Your Shape: Fitness Evolved.

I've had the Kinect since Christmas. It's fun. In my experience:

    1) Yes. You don't want them in or walking through your playspace, but they can sit on the periphery with no issues. Other than occasionally getting in the way, our 50 lb dog hasn't been an issue. Nor has our 2 year-old.

    2) That's probably enough room for one person, but you'll still find yourself maximizing your space. You really can't have too much room.

    3. Yes, direct natural light causes issues. If you have blinds you can pull, you'll be fine.

    I have a kinect.
8 feet is perfect. 6 not so much. This all depends on the height of the entertainment center/where you're going to be placing the kinect.

Do yourself a favor, measure it out BEFORE you pick it up. We still enjoy it, but moving furniture in our tiny apartment isn't awesome.

    1) Yes

    2) That should be plenty of room

    3) We have a picture window behind us when we use our Kinect and haven't had any issues

As an aside, you mention "we", and I'm wondering if you plan on using the Kinect side by side. I say this because Your Shape: Fitness Evolved doesn't have any modes that allow you to play / workout side by side. I haven't gotten it yet, but EA Sports Active 2 on the Kinect is supposed to allow side by side workouts.

The entertainment unit has fairly high shelves. The Wii sensor currently is about 6-7 ft up from the floor. So the Kinect sensor would take it's place if it came to that.

We don't do use Active at the same time. Our living isn't wide enough to comfortably workout together (I'm looking at you lunges). It's perfect for one person. We had some interesting issues come up with Wii Resort. Mix two boys (ages 7 & 10) add sword fighting... results: black eye. Thankfully they rather play the Xbox now...

We are also finding the remotes on Wii don't always reponde well during work outs, making it really frustrating at times. Plus the Nunchuck wire gets in the way more often then not. Yes I know we could get wireless one, but with having issues already with the Wii remote not always responding properly. Hate to have to worry about the nunchuck as well.

I found that it works great if you have enough space. If you don't, it tends to lose track of where you are. I don't have the workout games though so I can't tell you how good they are.

As long as people aren't getting up too often, I don't think you'll have a problem with people sitting around. Also your cats are probably not tall enough to register on the sensor =P.

I have been using Fitness evolved for a little over a month now, and I think it is great. It isn't perfect as a work out program, but it has a pretty great variety. On the cat note, my cat wanders in and out of the frame while I'm using it, and it doesn't cause any problems. I find the cat shape moving around on the screen pretty amusing though.

Finral that is funny! Now I can't wait to see either of the kitties pop on screen during :D

Thanks everyone for all the feed back :) I was concerned about "other's" presence during Kinect play after I read a review where the guy had issues getting the kinect to respond (lag) while his GF was reading in the same room. Just wanted to be sure animals wouldn't cause issues as well. The cats, for some odd reason, gravitate to the living room during workouts. I think it amuses them....

Anyhow, took measure of the living room. We have 8ft from TV to couch. 11 ft if we push the couch back. So that should be plenty of room! This weekend I'll be posting the Wii up for sell. Seen various ads selling for about $200 (Canadian) for 2 controllers and 6 games. I should be able to get that. 4 controllers, 3 games, Wii active set, Balance Board, and Wii weights.

    Thanks again :)
