That news is so old that it died and came back as a zombie. You're giving us zombie news.
So I beat Interlude at 3 Hours 20 Minutes and I can't imagine it taking anyone any longer than that. I am pretty much dumbfounded by that earlier estimate from Square-Enix about a 12 to 15 Hour story. Developers always pad the time it'll take to complete their games in press releases but usually you can cut that time by 1/3 or 1/2 but 3/4? Geez.
Son of a bitch. The mindflayer summon dropped during rydia's lunar trial so I had her learn it and when her trial was over and her spell list returned to normal she lost it.
3 DS is nice. But it's one of the few FFs I haven't replayed that much. I don't know, it's just a bit..bland? FF4 and 5 just end up doing 3's things (Summons, Multiple Vehicles, Multiple Worlds, Jobs) much better. Sure, it's better than a lot of JRPGs but there are much better FFs out there.
One day I really should nut up and play through III, much like I eventually did with II. I just keep getting to around the part where you have to shrink for the first time and lose interest. And then the horror stories about the last dungeon with its 50 bosses and no save points don't help in renewing interest.

So...is SE determined to have every pre-PS1 FF title on every system/OS ever?

Honestly, having gone back and played the old FFs I can't say they got good until 4...
FF1 is still a brilliantly fun game. I can replay that one probably once every few months without issue. Mixing up my class setup and whatnot for variety sake.
FF2 I've only managed to beat twice, and I dont know if I'll be able to do it again. I don't particularly enjoy it as a game. The story is pretty good.
FF3 I prefer the old NES version. The DS version just seems to be lacking something of the charm that the original had. Or maybe its just my hatred for the bobble-head 3d the DS uses so often.
So, maybe it's just been a while since I've played FF4, but I swear enemies never hit so hard in the Tower of Zot. They're taking away easily 1/3 of Cid and/or Yang's health per swipe, meaning I have to use a huge amount of MP healing up after each battle, and of course I've only got two healers, one of whom I need to keep reading to cast black magic whenever necessary.
If anyone wants a code for Cecil outfit in the new Dissidia, I have one from my copy of FFIV complete. First to claim it gets it.
Yo, lay it on me brosef.
Winner Winner! PM sent.
I wish I could play some of this tonight. Got my kids all day though. They are a little too young to be playing FF games. I can't wait until they learn how to read. It won't be bedtime stories, it will be RPG bedtime gaming.
Big thanks to Rubix for the Cecil code. This currently leaves the Lightning alt as the only costume I'm missing, but there's no way I'm putting cash down for 3rd Birthday. Incidentally, I wouldn't mind trading this Cecil code for a spare Aya one, if anyone's been sitting on it.
Can't do much with it now, since PSN is down, but I hope I can apply it soon. I need to give Cecil that extra aesthetic, since he's one of my least favorite characters to use in this game.
And good lord his story mode is boring. But then again, I've learned to face facts that most of FFIV's cast is pretty boring, especially thanks to Interlude doing little to flesh out any of them.
The only version that does anything to spice up FF IV's rather plain story is the DS version.
Which I can honestly say is by far the best version having played the psp version. I guess the psp version just gets to be my portable version of the after years, cause I'm definitely going to play the ds version of 4 when I play it again.
Ending of FF4 DS:
The ending of FF4 DS is the best example. The extra development they gave Golbez at the end, the whole abandoning Cecil part, was spectacular.
What I loved about 4 DS is that it made Rosa actually useful for doing something other than casting Cure spells. Pray was awesome for auto-battle, Protect and Shell actually made a difference and you didn't have to worry about stacking them, Slow was a must use on all bosses, Blink was even more useful that it was before as was Haste.
I also found myself actually needing to use Silence, Sleep, Stop, Toad, Mini, and Pig on a regular basis to incapacitate hard hitting or hard casting enemies. Also Cecil having Protect, Shell, and Raise was awesome and his Cura spell healed enough to make it a great post battle fix up for the whole party.
I'm not saying I don't love the PSP version because I really really do. I just wish that it had the mechanical touchups that the DS one had and I dont mean augments as well, just the fact that the tweaks made to it let you get more out of some characters than you used to.
The PSP got the extra content from the GBA version. I love the way that DS balanced the gameplay, but those graphics and the game speed itself are just plain awful. 10 years down the road when we're recommending what version to play, dollars to donuts says that the SNES version is still going to be the definitive one.
I loved how challenging DS IV was. But agreed, the graphics just undid everything I liked about the game. I could use my imagination with the sprites to make Dark Knight Cecil look like a freaking dark night. And Kain look like a total badass. The chib's with manimal paws really upset me.
Ultimately, I'm going with the PSP version for better sound and sprites. I can live without the extra difficulty.
Although, is that extra boss stuff included? Not that I mind, I still own it, but might as well ask.
You can switch party members before the last dungeon
A new dungeon for older characters to get up to date gear at Mt Ordeals
A new dungeon with the best armor and weapons available on the moon with a trial for each character that they can only access after they've been in a party that's beaten the last boss
A second version of the last boss at the end of said dungeon.
A new optional boss, also at the end of said dungeon.

Yeah no.
I never could even get halfway through the SNES version.
Fantastically slow. Kind of ham-handed in its execution. A bit too meta-gamy with the need to just toss augments on people for no reason. A little too much homogenization within the augment system. Graphics are terrible and will only age terribly.
Yeah...sadly sprites age better. Also...I really dislike the Augment system. It's a cool idea on paper because it adds some customization which FF4 lacks. But then it's tied to your character growth and it becomes so messy.
EDIT: That said, I still consider the DS version my favorite. I'm still fighting the need to buy another FF4. I'm currently looking at my FF Chronicles case, my GBA cart and my DS case. No way I'm doing this again. Besides, PSN is down! I can do this!
Hahaha man, you guys are making my 'what portable RPG should I buy' choice very tricky, as FFIV DS and FFIV Complete Collection were in the mix. I don't mind the 3D visual style of FFIV DS at all, but it'd be cool to know that I owned an entire 'saga' of that storyline on a single UMD.
That being said, I own stuff like Pokemon White/Chrono Trigger for my DS, and Star Ocean 2/Dissidia 1/Persona 3 Portable on PSP, so it's not like I'm hurting for portable RPG goodness
I'll throw my hat in for the love of the DS version. It's the reason I won't by Complete until it's cheap, since that's the only version I'll play through now. Complete is just for the After Years for me.

I'd say that you should buy Trails in the Sky for PSP and forget about silly old Final Fantasy.

Okay, not to derail the FF thread, but
I hear so much great stuff about this game, yet I have absolutely no context except the Legend of Heroes games around PSP's launch, which sure were...uh...videogames.
I seriously can't help but hear stellar stuff about Trails in the Sky though
But to get back on-topic, between DS and PSP Complete, which FFIV version would be the version to get if it's my first time playing through the title? I've played through about three hours of the GBA version way back when, but never anymore than that
The original 3 legend of heroes were good throwback games. No doubt, if you werent looking for real old school JRPG you were probably a bit amiss.
The new one, Trails in the sky, is still pretty old school, but more a working designs era JRPG than Falcom era JRPG.
Still pretty awesome though.
As for the question: Honestly Complete will give you the more 'pure' experience as far as FFIV is concerned. The DS one added a lot, mechanically, but I'll say the augment system and such ruined a lot of the subtle but charming simplicity of the system.
Course, the Complete sprites are ugly and Cecil and Kain look like Kamen Riders. I'd say just grab GBA version and play that. Best choice.

No, you're thinking of the iPhone version. This is the iPad version, which means a bigger, higher-defer screen if you've got one.
In fact, it just went up right now, for $16.99. It's a BS price, but maybe I'll put up the DS game on Ebay. It should pay for most of it, I'd imagine.

I sure didn't.
I guess I am. Accusations of News Zombifications retracted.
FFIII DS sells for $20 new. Why would anyone buy it used on ebay + shipping for anywhere close to $16?
Wasn't horrible, but I'm kinda wondering what the point was.

Truth. You forget that Cid and Yang have crappy defense and they can't use shields. Those health pools are for sucking damage.

PS. I'm ashamed of you all for not mentioning four heroes of light, yet. Such a good game, so under the radar. It's sad, really.

I think the augments and rearranged boss fights bring IV DS to a whole new level though.
How I loathe them so.
