I'm totally going to just believe this rumor about the remake. I mean, there's been so many crackpot predictions lately that have turned out to be completely true. This one's no different. And thus, I'm genre savvy enough to know that this it totally going to turn out the same. :P
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Uh, P2 wasn't re-released. Innocent sin is the half of the story we never got. we got Eternal Punishment 11 years ago. You know, the second half of the story. Yes, we got part 2 first, then didnt get part 1 for 11 years.
Sticking the rest in a spoiler for those who don't care.
As for P3 and P4. Actual spoken dialogue? No, I'd pretty much put it on par with FFXIII as far as how much people yap. Persona 3 portable had a fair bit more yapping in it though. Except FFXIII had to do lip syncing wherein P3/P4 only really had to with anime cutscenes.
As for NIS and its flagship series: They use 'HD sprites' as a selling point on the Disgaea 4 box. Yes, they are proud of finally making a PS3 game that isn't a 100x120 upscaled sprite festival. They could easily port a PS2 game to PSP because Disgaea 1 and 2 could have run on a PSX, Disgaea 3 only would have struggled on a PSX because of the geocubes. (Probably still would have run flawlessly on the PS2 though.) I suppose thats knitpicking, but when you release games that can be made in a digipen classroom your overhead can't be that high.
And no, when your company is big, you actually have less leeway to make mistakes. You have more investors, bigger market shifts due to failed attempts, etc. Its why indie and small time studios can experiment so much, while bigger studios are pretty much required to do what will make the most profit and spend as little as possible on things that might not make a profit.
As for FFVI: Level is the biggest deciding factor in physical attacks. magical attacks the biggest deciding factor is the spells power. Your characters actual magic stat is kind of superfluous. wearing two rings/earrings/armlets is pretty much awesome though and adds a huge chunk of damage. Gauntlet is great until you get two atlas armlets, then its kind of pointless.
Actually the sheer dependency on level always made me pretty sad in FFVI.

Well if we're being specific, I live in the UK so I never got either. Spoken dialogue isn't the same as script. Your perspective of what big companies have to do and what they choose to do is different to mine and Drez's, so I'll just stop here.
Those apparent details on the FFX remake are crazy, and pretty dumb apart from the online thing. All remakes need to do is look crisp, load quickly and maybe add some extra content, starting from the ground up would be an incredible waste of resources.
Are these FFX details still just rumour? I guess in some respects it would make some sense if they were doing something more substantial with it: the original game was in 4:3 so you'd think some rejigging would be required for it to look decent in widescreen. It'd be weird having the CGI sequences upscaled and in a different aspect ratio to the rest of the game.
Hey, FFXIII question. I played the game when it came out but didn't really do any of the optional missions. Now I'm playing it again and I want to get tier 3 weapons and do that noise. I'm just wondering is there any specific benefit to finishing the game and then doing the optional stuff versus doing it on pulse before you finish the game? I'd rather not finish the game and do it all, then just go finish the story when I feel like it, but I wasn't sure if there was stuff you can only do post game. Thanks.
All of the hunts are available before beating the game, but a handful are pretty much impossible to finish without the stats on the final crystarium (there were around 5 that I couldn't manage). Some also only open up once you've beaten Bart at the end of Pulse and I don't think you can get back until you've pretty much completed the final dungeon, so...
Doing the hunts earlier means it's easier for you to get 5 star ratings though.
On the one hand, they've gone and publicly admitted that FFXIV has caused significant damage to the FF brand: http://andriasang.com/comyby/
On the other, I can't believe they're still tossing money and development time in trying to fix it. I'd like to think they can somehow pull it off and make the game fun, but not only are the odds one in a million, by the time it reached that kind of state, who is left to care about it?
Meanwhile, some of the DLC items for FFXIII-2 have been revealed to be along the lines of "diva accessories" for Serah, including a microphone and earrings. That already leaves an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach, as it all relates to my theory about Toriyama's view of women in games he's involved in.
FFXIV is getting better all the time. Honestly, when they finally PS3 launch it, that'll be the time to up the marketing and get the game back out there.
Can it weather such a second launch? Who knows, but it may work out for the game. It has a lot of great things going for it.

I still can't believe a PS3 launch is even happening.
Part of me is considering getting it on the cheap and grinding it out while it's still free-to-play, but another part thinks I'd be better off waiting until it reached "acceptable standards" before divulging time into it.
Considering the current trends in MMOs, it would be in their best interest in just making it F2P forever.
Its more than acceptable at the current level. There is a lot of things left to add, but the actual gameplay is solid (It's actually always been kind of solid. There was just always a nagging sense of not a lot to do.)
FFXIV is pretty much a game you'll either enjoy or you won't, though, and at this stage in the game you can load it up and pretty much figure out what boat you're in.
So basically I can't get City of Heroes to work on my machine any more due to their log in system failing, so I'm looking for an MMO. What's so bad about FFXIV? Is it unplayable?
I think what was mentioned way back when it launched is that the storyline just kinda stops. There's no "endgame" compared to WoW/TOR/whatever and there aren't that many Storyline missions like FFXI.

I've played almost every single fantasy MMO released in the west and I gotta say none of them were as bad as FF XIV at launch. I've been in better betas and I've seen better alphas. Shockingly bad game.
I don't care how much better it is now or that I can still play it for free if I want, I'm not touching that game again.

I highly, highly doubt FFXIV will ever get a PS3 launch.
The reason it didn't launch on PS3 wasn't because the game was shit at launch, it was because they never actually figured out how to get it working on a PS3.
Actually, that should give you a pretty appropriate idea of the breadth and depth of jackassery that went into the FFXIV development.

Really?
Like it was worse than EverQuest? I couldn't even register or log in to EQ for four days when it came out.
That's fucking impressive if it was literally the worst launch.
Also, I know it wasn't technically "fantasy" but World War II Online still must have the worst launch of all. I mean, you'd have to work hard to fuck up a launch that badly.
Then again, I remember the whole PlayOnline debacle back when FFXI came out so I guess nothing is out of bounds for Squeenix.
This game was flat out not done. Incomplete zones, broken quest lines errywhere, bad graphical glitches on a game that only had graphics as a selling point. Shitty everything.
It also required a beastly system to still run at a shitty framerate.
They've fixed most of that from the description of my friends who play it for some strange reason. It's still pretty barren content wise.

They actually made XI fun again, right when all my super hard core buddies moved up to XIV!
Back in the day though if you had the perfect group with perfect execution FF XI was a blast. Those circumstances had to be manufactured though.
That was the exact problem:
- It was terrible solo.
- It was terrible for pick up groups.
- It was terrible for groups with friends unless your classes were all in some kind of workable synergistic alignment.
Not to mention the ridiculous server shard thing which meant you might not even be able to get on a server with your friends right away, the sparse game world (at least at launch), the terrible death punishment (seriously, it was worse than EverQuest and in EQ I once went from level 45 to 41 just trying to get my corpse), the incredibly ethnocentric/racist Japanese folks that massively outnumbered North American players at launch ("JP ONRY" indeed), slowest EXP gain ever, and so on.
I have no doubt that they eventually turned it into a fun game, but I couldn't stand the launch version of it.
I agree with XoB. My best FFXI memories were with a JP party just doing perfect Skillchains and Sneak Attacks+Trick Attacks. It was glorious. But I had to wait like 2 months to get that experience.
I really do want to revisit FFXI's world and finish all the expansions/quests from Treasures of Aht Urgan and up, but I can't bring myself to spend the money to wait in zones until my entire party gathers.
I'm hoping the rumors of a Vita port hold up, because that game would be terrific to revisit in a compact form with less requirements and grinding.
As for FFXIV on PS3...well, they keep insisting that it's coming.....

I spotted the FFXII sequel on the DS for cheap (Revenant Wings), I'd completely forgotten this thing had even come out and FFXII was my favourite one so I picked it up.
Anyone else played it? I'm enjoying it so far, plus it's nice to see Vaan and Penelo with some actual character development...

I guess one major advantage of a PS3 launch is that it would generate new reviews and a new, separate Metacritic entry for that version, whereas the reviews and Metacritic entry for the PC version will remain static no matter how much they improve the game. While it'll be hard to shake off the game's reputation, they'll at least get a critical reassessment.
Yeah, I've been wondering whether changing the name once it reaches "critical acceptance" would be the best option. Like, toss in a subtitle after FFXIV to indicate that it's "different".
And RW is underrated, since it does give actual character development to the original game's two most unnecessary characters. I just wish it still took place on Ivalice and not angel fanfiction utopia.
I mostly liked Revenant Wings. The gameplay was pretty good in an undemanding way and, as mentioned above, the character development is nice. But it's one of those games that throws away most of your goodwill at the end with a horrible broken final boss. I deliberately hold a grudge against all games that go tits up at the end, because it seems everyone is very forgiving when it's only a small bit at the end that's bad, and the majority of the game is good. My attitude is that all of the game is part of the experience and if I'm prevented from reaching the end credits by bad design I get very frustrated because it's reaching the end and having the satisfaction of knowing you've completed something that really validates the whole thing for me. Oh also, it does the same thing that FFXII does of giving you side-content and then suddenly giving you nasty ultra-hard side-content right at the end, so you put the hours in but can't say "I've completed all the side-content in this game". But yeah, other than that it's OK.

I love how Wada admits this but the only consequences of it is that a number of the FFXIV team have been replaced. As if they were the ones that decided they needed to rush that shit out as fast as possible. I can't believe he still has a job.

Those are some pretty awesome preorder bonuses, although it chaps my caboose that if I do decide to purchase FFXIII-2, I'm going to miss out on a physical hardcover book because I'd definitely need to get the Omega DLC.
