Yeah, agreed.
I'm already pretty much looking at FFXIII-2 as half "monster catching" game. Which, if the monster catching is robust enough, that would probably honestly be enough incentive for me to buy it on its own.

I'm telling ya, man. "Final Fantasy XIII: Dawn of the New World". Catching monsters, mucking up an established world and continuity, and being forced to play as an ultra-generic looking new guy and a chick in a dress instead of the previous game's cast. Now with DLC, QTEs and time travel!!! It's like anticipating the most awesomely terrible train wreck possible - you don't want to, but you can't help but laugh at every new detail being released.
I'll buy the best buy one for the book. Because I care about the story that much. Totes serious.
Though the Dawn of the New World comparisons seem more and more apt the more they release about this game. Which as stated, means it will probably be a spectacular train wreck and I'll have to buy it purely on the basis of this impending disaster.
I really hope the whole "search for Lightning" thing is just a plot element to get the story started and not the entire plot. It would be much cooler if you find Lightning very early and then she joins your party as the story expands.
Actually, I'm referring to Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, not the third Shadow Hearts game. Different beasts, really. Just read through the LP and you'll see exactly where I'm going with this parallel. You'll thank me later by not believing they're doing FFXIII-2 in any serious manner.
EDIT: Beaten like Lightning beats Snow after a few drinks.
Welp, they finally did it; the frequent hatred and trolling at GAF concerning all things Final Fantasy have resulted in a thread to specifically collect all the clutter resulting from such conversations: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447963
I'm sure a good laugh can be had from the heated "debates" coming from this thread, but I'll be avoiding it like the plague. I still can't look at FFXIII-2 without making a frowny face, so I'm not at a good place with the series right now.

I think the thing I liked most about 1 was that it really had that light-hearted sense of adventure going on for it. I mean it had its doom and gloom but for the most part it was lots of fun and I really liked the characters.
2, yeah it was good and one of my favorites, but I kind of feel it had that more generic RPG thing going on for it at the time. Anti-heroish protagionist going up against a corrupt government/religion to stop some great being from destroying everything...etc...etc. It was pretty common at that time.
I think the bad voice acting and uber generic evil church plot of Grandia 2 add to its charm. It screams late 90's anime to me and has a real nostalgic effect on me. The battle system is also pleasant, and unlike other RPGs of that era it loads very quickly.
Honestly, at this point XIII-2 is shaping up to be the next Sonic 2006 in terms of sheer laziness and unintentional comedic value.
I really hope this isn't a response to the Japanese idol thing where fanboys go into a frothing (and ofttimes murderous) rage if their female idols do "unclean" things like have a boyfriend, get married, or even lose their virginity. You scoff at my comments about Toriyama possibly having a misogynist view about female characters, but well....
Also...
The magazine also briefly mentions Caius who is said to be the strongest rival in the Final Fantasy series.
How many times have they pulled this nonsense? Let's count the ways:
"Lulu is the most powerful Black Mage in Final Fantasy history"
"Lightning is the most powerful female character in Final Fantasy history"
"Lightning is the oldest protagonist in Final Fantasy history" (not even close)
So are they implying now that Caius is stronger than Sephiroth? Or does he not count as a rival?

Well they are giving her the "Idol Props" DLC, so. . .
Honestly, at this point it's like looking at the worst kind of fanfic imaginable, writ large and given a multi-million dollar budget to bring it to life. "What? We have to get some use out of the engine we made for XIII? Say, people liked that Chrono Trigger game from a long time ago, right? Let's do that, only with the XIII cast! No, wait, even better idea - we focus on Lightning's MOE! sister and. . . hold on, she was supposed to be married to Snow, right? No biggie, we can always undo that! And here's this even cooler guy as the main hero, since he's from this PARALLEL UNIVERSE and totally awesome! They'll eat it all up!!!"

These types of statements are bad enough in the superhero worlds which are at least supposed to be the same universe, but even then are ultimately worthless. Who cares if X could beat Y, outside of something like Dissidia. The real question should be how important a rival is to the series, something Caius is probably the worst contender for. I can recall him showing up only twice, once at Hopes place and then at the end unless I'm forgetting something.
In any event, I'm setting my hopes for XIII-2 to be similar to X-2. Horrible plot that really doesn't add anything to the story line but darn good gameplay to offset it. To me, making Serah single again isn't as detrimental to the story as having Yuna not being able to cope without Tidus
and then succeed in rescuing him from death
Only thing that concerns me, regarding the time travel stuff, is how they are going to maintain difficulty if you can jump around the game's timeline. To me, that was the best thing XIII did. Each area felt balanced, and every boss was somewhat a challenge (at least you didn't beat him by mashing attack).
And for what it's worth, Vivi is the best Black Mage in the series (not talking powerlevel).

Lulu is the weakest black mage in final fantasy history. Black magic sucks so bad in FFX.
Hmm...really? I mean Lulu is pretty much useful all the way until the end game where you've got quick hit and stupid high stats on everyone. She wasn't stupid OP, but she had a role just like everyone else in the game and she did it well. I actually like that about FFX.
Honestly...I would say that FF8 had the weakest magic system. Outside of bananas stuff like Meltdown and Aura.

I don't mind DLC, but vendor-exclusive preorder bonuses annoy me to no end.

It's From the New World.
And why must you torture me so by reminding me?

I think Grim is talking about Tales of Symphonia.
You're talking about Shadow Hearts, right?
EDIT: Beaten like Lightning beats Snow after a few drinks.
Oh, point. Two terrible and unneeded diverging "sequels".

Which one is the physical art book? Best Buy? That one will.
Both the Gamestop and Amazon ones will likely be paid DLC before terribly long.

You didn't play Grandia? You only count as one person right?
Like at all
Edit: I loved Grandia. Stop hurting it.
I think it had the best gameplay out of the ones I played(every one except X).
Still think 1 and 2 were the best...and I liked 1 more than 2. >_>
But I never played any of the sequels

Because that is the best thing that never was.
edit: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MY EYES
Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst
