FF8 had a magic system? I thought those were just words and numbers that you could put on stats to make hitting things with swords better.

I kid, but the magic system did kinda suck in 8.

You could make the argument that FFX doesn't really either because of its malleability. I'm just referring to the magic system as a whole.

I think Rinoa was SUPPOSED to be, sorta, but the system doesn't really reward specialization that much, so nobody ends UP being anything but a jack of all trades.

I liked X's magic system. There have been few games where I could actually properly use mage characters. Most of the time it's either because their MP is too low or spells cost too much, you don't want to spend that cost on gutter trash and want to save it for bosses. Combine that with rare MP recovery items, and my mage is just dead weight for 90% of the trip. Never really had that problem in X.

X was cool because Lulu was always pretty powerful as you levelled through the game, especially when her spells were going against things with a weakness. Once she gets doublecast she's quite strong. If you get her ultimate weapon and just doublecast spells for 1 mp each, she's downright unfair.

Though that's balanced by the fact that her ultimate weapon involves lightning dodging.

FF8's magic was used for stat boosting, that's it.

I mean you could cast spells, but there's really no point and every time you cast any of your best spells, you literally weaken your character because he will likely have one of those spells junctioned.

I loved FF8, but that was kind of a weird system.

Only thing that concerns me, regarding the time travel stuff, is how they are going to maintain difficulty if you can jump around the game's timeline. To me, that was the best thing XIII did. Each area felt balanced, and every boss was somewhat a challenge (at least you didn't beat him by mashing attack).

Play PSP's Tactics Ogre. They handle it quite well.

I really hope this isn't a response to the Japanese idol thing where fanboys go into a frothing (and ofttimes murderous) rage if their female idols do "unclean" things like have a boyfriend, get married, or even lose their virginity. You scoff at my comments about Toriyama possibly having a misogynist view about female characters, but well....

Well they are giving her the "Idol Props" DLC, so. . .

Honestly, at this point it's like looking at the worst kind of fanfic imaginable, writ large and given a multi-million dollar budget to bring it to life. "What? We have to get some use out of the engine we made for XIII? Say, people liked that Chrono Trigger game from a long time ago, right? Let's do that, only with the XIII cast! No, wait, even better idea - we focus on Lightning's MOE! sister and. . . hold on, she was supposed to be married to Snow, right? No biggie, we can always undo that! And here's this even cooler guy as the main hero, since he's from this PARALLEL UNIVERSE and totally awesome! They'll eat it all up!!!"

Pretty sure they weren't thinking of Chrono Trigger at all when they came up with this idea.

I do hope the time travel system means that...
    Jhill makes a return appearance.

She got seriously short-changed in the last game. Not as bad as Judge Drace, but still.

    Also...
The magazine also briefly mentions Caius who is said to be the strongest rival in the Final Fantasy series.

How many times have they pulled this nonsense? Let's count the ways:

"Lulu is the most powerful Black Mage in Final Fantasy history"

"Lightning is the most powerful female character in Final Fantasy history"

"Lightning is the oldest protagonist in Final Fantasy history" (not even close)

So are they implying now that Caius is stronger than Sephiroth? Or does he not count as a rival?

These types of statements are bad enough in the superhero worlds which are at least supposed to be the same universe, but even then are ultimately worthless. Who cares if X could beat Y, outside of something like Dissidia. The real question should be how important a rival is to the series, something Caius is probably the worst contender for. I can recall him showing up only twice, once at Hopes place and then at the end unless I'm forgetting something.

Er, Caius is a new villain (?) for the sequel. You're probably thinking of that guy who pretty much had nothing to do with the story.

Heck, he got shot in one scene and we never find out who it was or why they did it.

I thought X did a few things very well, such as how incredibly resistant to physical damage the Flans were. In many FF games you can power through the Flans/Jellies with ease because melee was so OP. But in X, you actually need a black mage (Lulu) to get through the Flan areas without having an aneurism.

I don't believe so, not in X anyway. Their physical resistance wasn't breakable.

Maybe you're thinking of XIII. You could there. Maybe XII also.

Flan killing is one of the only times in that game where I felt the need to switch my party up. Armored enemies would only take a few more turns with regular people, flying could be hit fairly easily with regular attacks, and agile monsters didn't really need Tidus to hit.

Killing Flans without magic though? Not gonna happen any time soon.

So...this is the first video to almost renew my faith in this game:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmd-P6IMt4Y&feature=feedu

The concept is pretty interesting, at least from the start:
Lightning literally gets written out of the original ending

And it also looks like they are going to use the time travel mechanic to retread old events in FFXIII. I'm hoping they actually show the consequences of changed timelines....heck, this could lead to a complete and literal retcon of the first game's story.
I especially hope this means the return (and possibly revival) of Cid and Jhill...two potentially two characters who got screwed over big time.

Cid in particular....he could have easily been a party member. I hate seeing cool characters put to waste

It would be pretty hilarious if this was SE's way of encouraging the hatred over FFXIII; the rant Noel gives Snow almost feels like he's winking at the camera saying "See? We're listening, we know you hate the shit out of this character".

Which is pretty unfair as he was nowhere near the worst character in that game (opinions opinions).

But again...the Lightning parts clearly look cool. So why are they devoting such little focus on her?

Sure, Noel looks like he might be okay, but when you go and show their scenes back-to-back, you're basically admitting that the time-traveling adventures of Serah and Noel are basically filler.

Heck, I'd like to play through Caius' perspective; he looks like a fun character, plus he's played by Liam O Brian...sick of him yet?

But more than anything else, I continue to wonder why they're still sticking with only two human party members followed by a captured monster for the third.

I hear that and see that the battle system remains relatively unchanged, and I just imagine what a pain it's going to be to stagger monsters. Plus, Sentinel is going to be even more useless now.

The plot should focus around Cocoon (now named Sylvarant) and Gran Pulse (now named Tethe'alla) and the discrimination and hatred caused by the two mingling.

Or some crazy time travel. Seriously though, 2 main characters not in the first game, guest appearances by the old cast, and monster collecting for the last party slot? That is ToS2!

Also, they said there would be more DLC outfits, but also promised none of them were swimsuits.

I think I would have preferred the swimsuits. The whole idol thing, knowing what I now know about Japan's idol obsession...it makes things more disturbing.

But as long as this doesn't become a Third Birthday "fuck your favorite characters" thing, I should count my blessings.

But that is still a very high possibility.

If you thought XIII-2 was conflicting, what until you read this whammy of an announcement: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448493

I literally almost spat out my coffee.

Is it me, or is this news utterly insane for anyone else?

First of all, is the PS3 even going to be Sony's current console by that time? Or is SE going to once again pull a PSP/Wii scenario and release this as the dead-last game for the system?

Not only that, but you know what they're doing by claiming that 2.0 will be out in 2013, yet resume subscription fees this year?

They're basically telling you not to touch their game until then, because it won't be in an acceptable state.

I think their plan is to charge during the transition and provide content that explains the changes to the world in-story, the idea being that this content is exclusive to the pre-Version 2.0 game and can't be played after the world changes. I can't imagine people going for it though.

Sorry for it to be the one single thing I picked out of this, but...Sentinel wasn't even remotely useless in XIII and virtually everything post-game it was an absolute requirement. Even during the main game proper there were plenty of instances where it could make your life insanely easier with judicious use of proper Sentinel having paradigms.

The statement is so completely and totally wrong it hurts my brain.

So you think they're going to pull a Cataclysm that changes the game completely? I doubt that.

But if nothing else, I really hope this game succeeds mainly because I feel for the poor guy who has had to work 7 day shifts to fix the awful shit that resulted from the original game.

Seriously, that guy deserves a promotion or something after this. And whoever was responsible for FFXIV's original state and rushed release....he doesn't deserve his job. Between him, Toriyama, and whoever designed the weapon upgrade system in FFXIII, there's a list of SE people that I want nowhere near SE now.

This must be how the Nomura haters feel....except Nomura has never come close to fucking up as colossally as these people.

Sorry for it to be the one single thing I picked out of this, but...Sentinel wasn't even remotely useless in XIII and virtually everything post-game it was an absolute requirement. The statement is so completely and totally wrong it hurts my brain.

This is true...many of the later boss fights practically required Sentinel. I don't literally find it to be a useless class.

But it was still the class that got used the least, and I'm seriously wondering how it's going to work with a two-man (plus monster) team....maybe the monsters can switch classes too; an Iron Giant with Sentinel on sounds very handy.

But really, it feels like they aren't changing enough of the original game to compensate for the new party layout. Why not just create new and improved classes or other mechanics?

  • ToothyToothy Registered User regular
You're missing a part of the monster party thing, Snugs. Each monster has a class, and instead of choosing the Iron Giant to go sentinel, you would choose between an Iron Giant, a Behemoth, and whatever else for the Sentinels in your paradigms.

  • Professor SnugglesworthProfessor Snugglesworth Registered User regular
But again, I worry how balanced/varied the monsters are going to be. Judging from past experiences, I'm not expecting a whole lot of variety here.

For example, one of the pre-order items is having Omega Weapon right from the start. Omega Weapon, who is usually reserved as one of the strongest (or the strongest) optional bosses in each FF game.

Why switch to anything else once you start off with that beast? The same logic applies to any other top-tier monster you capture....once you nab a Behemoth, what reasons will you have to go back to Chocobo or Flan?

I honestly would have preferred more human party members. It's going to get real boring only playing two characters and occasionally switching to Lightning or a temp member.
