I haven't really been following Rockstar lately, but I'm surprised to see it on the Wii. I know Reggie was in talks with them, but still.
New York, NY - February 6, 2007 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is proud to announce Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation 2 system, PSP system, and Nintendo’s Wii™. Manhunt 2 is the debut title from the newly formed Rockstar London studio, which is developing the game in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North. The Wii™ version is being developed by Rockstar Toronto. Manhunt 2 will be available this summer.

“With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward,” said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. “We are also excited to have our newest development team, Rockstar London, working on the title alongside our two established UK studios, Rockstar North and Leeds.”

One that also has other reasons not to sell well (past controversy/rating/content).

I thought this was going to be about Manhunter.

Man that would have been cool.

The first game was actually pretty good, although I never finished it.

I would expect Rockstar to do some Wii specific controls. On-screen instructions like "Waggle the remote to stab him in the neck with a broken bottle" are going to be weird, though.

    Seriously.

I can't wait for "throw the remote+nunchuck in the air and pull back to suffocate the enemy with a plastic bag!".

isn't' this game like super super violent... That could be cool with the Wii but I think I'd feel dirty when playing it.

Seconded. Pretty much everybody of importance, apart from Cash and whatsherface, are dead, and how.

Putting aside the gore, Manhunt was actually a pretty solid stealth action game. It could've used tighter melee combat, but it had some decent duck-and-cover gunplay alongside some of the better stealth mechanics I've seen this side of, say, earlier Splinter Cells or MGS's. Not what I'd call $50 good, but it made for a good rental and I might pick it up if I can find it cheap.

    It was pretty decent, quality-wise.

But I felt very, VERY dirty playing it.

Once you watched all the kill-animations in the first game, it was over. Srsly, there was no point playing after that.. the game wasn't very good in itself. The ultra-violence was very good though.

I hope they add more stealth gameplay features this time around.

I loved the first one. The different crews were hilarious, the combat was visceral and using the earpiece to have the Director talk to you compounded the whole experience. Piggy was also one of the creepiest bosses I've faced in a game. Plus the game was pretty tough. Will probably buy this on release day.

I think having a game like this will be really healthy for the Wii. It'll go a long way towards Nintendo shedding it's perception of being for kids.

I can see a ton of controversy coming from this though. Parents aren't going to like having their kids mimic actions of bludgeoning someone's head with a meathook (if that is the route Rockstar takes).

I loved the first one too despite my general game preferences. Somethign like this being on the Wii but not also the 360 is pretty interesting.

This PSP -> Wii trend is pretty shitty though. Look at Alien Syndrome.

Anyways I very much hope that besides the inevitable "swing the controller to saw their head off" functions on the Wii it will also support the Classic Controller.

Yep, another PS2->Wii port. I just wish that these games provided some kind of avenue for creative controls on the Wii versions. I've never played Manhunt, so I don't know. I do know that a game like Splinter Cell is a prime example of what happens when you just directly straight port a PS2/GCN game to the Wii and just give it controls to make it work instead of doing something useful with them. I mean, I wouldn't complain so much about Splinter Cell if they hadn't at least let you aim the gun with the Wiimote.. but instead they literally mapped analog sticks to the wiimote pointer so that you had to drag the crosshair around instead of just pointing where you want to shoot.

Anyway, that's another story for another thread, and I know that Ubi is totally seperate and not related to R*, but it was just an example.

Well, maybe R* will be able to do something interesting. We'll see. I guess if nothing else this sort of thing helps Nintendo shake the 'kiddy' image. Which, actually, seems to be working slowly but surely thanks to the Wii's design, the success of expanding the market with the DS, and the widespread appeal of Wii Sports.

It's be a **** city stories, but I personally predict that there will be a Wii GTA, from the looks of how things are going it will eventually have to big a market share for R* to ignor.

If it doesn't happen, it'll be because they were given big bags of money by sony.

If they're going to put a GTA on the Wii....

Let's assume they do another "Liberty City Stories/Vice City Stories".

That will go from PSP->PS2->Wii. GTA5 on Wii? .... I doubt it.... but I don't know.

Anyway, it would still certainly help the Wii. Something like LCS/VCS may seem like a poor thing to port from a PSP to a console, but LCS sold something like a million or so copies on the PS2. GTA, even in its.... watered down form.. Is still apparently a big deal to lots of people.

Even though it's a port, it's still inetresting that the Wii was chosen to receive the game. Rockstar did very little with the Gamecube so I hope they don't stop here with the Wii. If the game sells well (compared to the other versions, that is) then there's a good chance Rockstar will throw some more games to the Wii.

    FUCKING AWESOME.

Manhunt falls easily into my top five favorite games of the generation. I adore everything Rockstar puts out but this game eclipses everything else- Red Dead, Bully, Warriors, even the mighty GTA. Never before have I sensed fear so palpably or thrilled to a single kill.

This is a game I'd actually buy a Wii for. Where even Zelda couldn't convert me.

Hopefully they still have Craig Connor on the soundtrack. I really like Manhunt's music both in the game and as good background filler when I'm working on something.

Half the reason Manhunt is so great is due to Brian Cox's voice acting though for the Starkweather character. Since using Starkweather again won't really be an option I hope they can bring in someone with equal class.

I'm doubting that will all be the case though. This is the first we've heard of the game but it's coming out this summer? You people saying it's PS2 to Wii are a little optimistic. This was clearly a PSP game from the get go. :|

Actually, I'm not so sure. About six months ago, there was Wii preview in Newsweek (or was it Time, I'm not sure). Article was pretty basic stuff and mostly told about how they played Wii Tennis. One comment I did personally found interesting was how writer of article said that Manhunt was coming to Wii. It was just so strange, as whole comment felt out of place. I had even forgotten whole thing before reading this thread.

Eh, I'll be trying it on day one either way. I've dearly loved just about any product Rockstar's published that isn't Grand Theft Auto (and I don't even HATE those, I just get bored of them about thirty minutes in).

I personally didn't care for Manhunt too much, the gameplay just never clicked with me, I wanted more freedom I guess. Personally, I'd be happy if it was entirely new characters and took place in the wilderness/on an island. Maybe have it be the storyline of Surviving the Game where you have to use the envirnment to take out the people hunting you. I mean, the GTA games don't really connect in terms of main characters, so I'd wager Manhunt doesn't have to.

Good news for the Wii though, whether or not they all end up good games we've seen Scarface, Godfather, Manhunt and Driver all announced in the past few weeks giving the Wii a broader scope of games.

Rockstar Toronto also ported Max Payne to the PS2. I think the team they have working on the Wii version is really just a studio that ports Rockstar's games from one platform to another.

I loved this game. The mood it set was just incredible. Like people have said, you just felt *dirty* playing it. Not only were you horribly killing people...they were usually horrible people as well. You were playing as a man who is actually a totally guilty, convicted murderer.

Every little detail just set the mood so well. I loved the Director's little comments, all the random mutterings from the bad guys, etc. I liked 9mm as well, so that helped. I made a friend or two play it, and they just never got into it. As the manual said...turn off the lights, turn up the sound, and get ready to kill.

I can't wait to see what the sequel will be like.

I'd like to finish the original, I borrowed it from a friend and got about halfway through before he took it back. I may pick it up if I can find it cheap anywhere, I don't remember a whole lot about it besides the fact that it was the most brutal game I've ever played.

Manhunt had some nifty production values, but parts of it were ropey and the gameplay wasn't up to much, period - I loved the audio, and it was... kind of fun to play but the stealth was terrible. Why couldn't enemies pursue you all over the map? Why was it blatantly obvious every time which darkened sections they could or could not walk into? It got a bit more challenging later on but it was still a fairly ropy game, and the GTA 3 engine was never meant to push that kind of environment. Relatively little of the shock value was in the graphics - bits of the visuals were atmospheric enough but parts were hysterically bad. The rats. The rats! Oh, Jesus, my aching sides! And the physics were hilarious.

I'd kind of like to see a sequel, for all that. I enjoyed it enough to play through to the end. But a lazy mission pack wouldn't be enough to get me to part with my money.
