The story and narrative however was bad. It was an extremely fractured story which went all over the place, and only during the very end did it even become clear why the stuff that was happening was a big deal in the grand scheme of things
Well, it was a different sort of story than what we're used to. It wasn't really meant to be a cohesive narrative, it was some dude or chick's life story to that point, the building of a champion. Champions usually have more than one great deed under their belts, they get to be that because they've consistantly been a factor in an area's concerns.
In fact, the game actively denounces that sort of narrative, because Cassandra goes into the interrogation sure that there was an over-arching plot, while Varric is saying "Hey, it's a lot more complicated than that." This is Bioware deconstructin' the countryside and deconstructin' the peasants and their thatched roof cottages.
it felt like the game ended just as the real adventure was about to begin
To that point - I don't even go there anymore. It's sad that to have a civil discussion about a Bio game you have to leave the Bio boards. I'm a fan - a big fan - but it's no place for me. I do wonder to what extent (if any) the higher-than-normal access to developers fed the frenzy and entitlement.
Unrelated, thanks to your icon I picture Creed working on the cinematics. Please don't dissuade from this - if it's not true I don't wanna know!
This may well have been posted, but for those with Nvidia cards and bad performance these drivers may relieve your woes (270.51 betas).
I went from poor performance at 16x10, 2xAA/2xAF, DX11, max except blur and DoF, to good performance with all the eyecandy and 4xAA/16xAF. That's with a GTX480.

WOW! What an incredibly apt example. This actually does make the whole thing make more sense to me.
It'll be funny when Bioware learns how to use the dark side that is EA.
Don't like a guy, just let it slip that 'he' decided to do something unpopular. The dumb masses react unknowingly and EA brings down the axe with only the Bioware executives and a few fans being the wiser.
Give new meaning to 'join me and we can rule the galaxy....'.
So we're fighting a group, and there's an assassin, he stealth pops out, and I ready myself to assassinate/twin fangs him.
But I can't.
Because Merrill insta-gibbed him.
Can I ask how you are speccing her? and mages in general? I am doing a Mage run on hard difficulty and all of my mages (including my hawke) can't even gib lieutenants. So frustrating having my main character a little bit of a putz.

Thus far I've gone Mag/Con with her
Respecced as soon as I could to get rid of the useless Willpower points.
Then I've just gone deep primal, deep elemental, and her got her her bloodmage talent.
I've never seen her gib anyone before this, but she just...exploded this guy, like, her chain lightning did tremendous damage out of no where.

Vsove, no need to worry. Everyone has complaints, but by and large we love the game. I may not like some aspects of it, but I wouldn't have spent 60 hours playing it if I didn't like it. The characters are great - Merrill and Isabela deserve special mention - and the interaction is at a level I did not expect.
I'm learning 3DSMAX today! It is an incredibly useful tool to have at least a passing knowledge of - would allow for more variations of animations in the future, since I don't need to bug an animator to mirror a left-hand gesture to the right hand, for example.
I'm just waiting for the patch so that I can play my Isabela-romancing mage :X
It's not so hard to get around it - just always save with isabela in the team. I'm doing a rogue run and not noticing any slow-down or vulnerablility despite having her friendship.
Anyone else getting weird graphics glitches? Because for some reason some of the glowing effects are lining up right on characters, and in certain scenes the people have a weird flickering.
Oh my god guys, I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins again, and I've just realised that the Tower of Ishal is just the Circle Tower assets reused! I totally hate this game now.
Is the Sebastain DLC dungeon a retextured The Cave?
I know at least one room definitely is, but I'm not sure about the rest. Which leads me to believe if that they had retextured the fuck out of everything, I would never have noticed.

I believe it is... and that's the one thing that frustrates me about the reuse of areas. I wish they'd at least retextured things so even though it was the same cave, you wouldn't know at a glance. It's not a wholly cut-and-paste job, but they definitely just retouched the building blocks.
Spoilered for huge, here's a comparison of the same area...
So the prince promised he would bring back an army from Starkhaven that he would use to shit all over my place, man
Are they just going to forget about him in future installments or will this minor DLC character suddenly show up with a thousand soldiers sometime in the future

It's very unlikely DA3 will be in the Free Marches so it doesn't matter.
but I bumped it down to casual for just that fight and now that I'm through it I'm at 20 hours in Act II and I'm loving it again.
I went Rogue archer, and he's an absolute beast. 67% crit, 145% crit damage and a bow that does 102 damage. I use the ability that lets me crit every shot for x seconds and I can wipe out whole mobs in combo with hail of arrows.
I use Fenris, Merril and Anders in my party. Anders floats around and heals, but can do some pretty heavy damage when we're in trouble. Fenris is my tank and it's awesome to have him fly around the screen so quickly, deathdealing. Merril, who I romanced with because, well, why not, rains down tempest (tempest, + Anders tempest, + hail of arrows is pretty much surefire way to kill any mob of normal creatures), then just RENDS THE INSIDE of all of her foes.
Really digging this game, my party, and the whole experience.

Yeah, but I had more z-buffer fighting in ME2, so I've gotten used to it. Occasionally have the screen flash black with a diagonal green line through the upper right corner though.
And sebastian might be okay, if he wasn't completely outclassed by varric, who has a better skill tree and better equipment

ahhh I think there is my problem I actually have been pumping some points in WillPower.
thanks hopefully that will help me get Merril and my Hawke to deal some damage instead of being debuff machines.
for him to attempt to kill Anders himself, then and there. Then you have the option of killing Sebastian, letting him take out Anders, or stopping him non-lethally at which point he would swear to return with an army...for Anders.
Well, I should be clear, for most of the game he isn't. But then at the end,
if you refuse to kill Anders, he swears to march on the city.
Which is fair, because an individual or small sub-group committing an offense warrants disprpoportionate retribution against the entire group OH WAIT
Anders just killed the woman that was almost like his mother to him.
so he should attack a whole city full of people who had nothing to do with the entire thing?
Compared to the actions of other people in Act 3, and thier reasoning behind it, that is almost well-adjusted.
...and I took it more like his first act as Prince of Starkhaven would be to hunt Anders down, and woe betide anyone who gets in the way of that... even if it's an entire city.
It's not about rationality, it's about proportionality. Sebastian's parents were assassinated, so he sought vengeance on the people responsible
...and not their cities. In the endgame, he just makes this huge leap from Anders and implicitly Hawke being responsible, to the whole city. If his reaction to this situation didn't have precedent, it wouldn't be as tough a pill to swallow.
Which is why I think he's an asshole.
My impression may be different when I do my anti-mage run.
Edit: also, he's overly intense and unpleasant in the party banter. He just comes across as a wet blanket.

It'd have been twice if I were a Mage.... And some of the floors look REALLY similar? :P

Does he show up in Act II or something to be recruited?
Yes. You go see him at the start of act 2 and he gives you a quest and joins your party.
He's also really rather lame.
The only reason I would recruit him is for completionism and because otherwise your inventory fills with Bows that NOBODY CAN USE!
Seriously.
What the hell.

He's an asshole, though. At least Leliana put out.
Because he's RELIGIOUS, Man!
Also he hates Anders, just because he's an abomination.
Why I fear the ocean.
