I realize this is just another thread by GDD, but it's worth it.
I've been making websites on and off for a while now and the company I use is surpass hosting. You might remember them, I jumped on their bandwagon a few years ago when someone posted a link to them because they were offering a full year of hosting for $7.
Well that deal has long since expired. But if you sign up for a plan in February, you can get 200 gigs of space and 2000 gigs of bandwidth for a full year for $1. There isn't a contract, and you can just cancel it in a year (which is what I usually do anyway)
If you don't have a domain, they will sell you one for $16 bucks, but the hosting space and bandwidth is only a buck.
How good of a host are these guys normally? Their prices aren't half bad...
I've used them on four websites over the course of 3 three years. I've never ever had a problem with them. They do not have a tech support number, but they have a kind of java chat system or an e-mail support where you can get in touch with them within 24 hours usually.
They have never had an outage in the three years I have used them, and they never gave me a headache over taking advantage of them and canceling every year after the initial deal.
I'm probably their worst kind of customer, but they have been nothing but good to me.
Ok, this may seem like a stupid question but I don't really have any experience with this shit. So first I registered a domain name with them for $16 ( I wasn't sure if the hosting and domain registration could be done all at once or needed to be done seperately). So now that I have a domain name and want to sign up for $1 hosting, I'm not sure which option to choose:
Register new domain
Transfer my existing domain
I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers only
I'm guessing I want option 2 or 3 but I don't know what updating my nameservers means.

Can you get the domain from somewhere else, or does it have to be this site?
For the sake of a couple of bucks, is it that big a deal?
You can get domains for $6
$10 is a big deal
keith, do you live on the streets? Because, even as a poor student, I can accept spending a fiver more than I might need to. Because, you see, I can just not buy a bottle of wine one time when I might otherwise and make up the cost.

Well, that $5 means I'm out two comics that week
I'd rather get my comics and a domain name than just a domain name because I don't want to click onto another site

p.s. I really wish I had some time to devote to a site; I'm just too fucking busy right now; thanks for the tip, GDD. Good stuff.

Now if only I needed a website for something.

Do I set it to the $6/month or $60/yr? Because both do the same thing, but the yearly charge says its $4.11, and monthly says $4.93.
I'd really like to take advantage of this offer...
Then I click next.
Which then takes me here
...Now it worked. Never mind.

Yeah, it's a whole $6 more than I get charged at somewhere like Dreamhost.
I mean, thats like totally putting me off the idea.
Now I'm pissed off at my hosting again
