The books keep talking about how Vimes is putting on weight.

I am beginning to suspect that he is simply anorexic. :(:(

It's supposedly going to feature mostly him and not so much the City Watch. Which isn't awful, as Vimes is the best character of it, but I'll miss Nobby and Colon. A break from Carrot will be nice though, I just haven't really liked him as much since Men at Arms. Thud was better in some parts because Carrot is at his best when he's being dwarvish or air headed which was pretty often. Not so much when he's being a nigh-unstoppable pseudoking who knows everyone and makes everyone like him and be nice people all the time.

Really, he was at his best in Guards, Guards. I miss the Carrot from that a lot. He's just not the same anymore.

Carrots shining moment for me is still when he becomes leader of the park at the end of the fifth elephant. Just the way he does it. No words, just action. Does that count as making people like him? Not exactly charisma.

Vimes is still my favorite. Night Watch worked with just him, though it did technically have Colon, Nobby and Vetinari in it.

Night Watch is the best book Pratchett ever wrote.

Jingo! Is probably the worst book as far as Carrot being a Mary-Sue.

But yeah, as long as Vimes is involved it should be a riot.

Night Watch is a book which he seems to have waited for years to write

It's as if everything prior to it was leading up to it

Actually, less "as if" and more "because"

The watch are far and away my favorite Discworld sub-series.

I got started on Pratchett after reading Good Omens (I was already a Gaiman fan from Sandman, but wasn't sure about this other guy and his 'comic' fantasy). While on a trip to London - I picked up a Watch trilogy (!) in an out-of-the-way bookstore and have been obsessed ever since.

Sooooo happy to see that Snuff cover.

If you want to talk about mary-sues, I think the worst offender in the discworld series is William de Worde, from The Truth - it really bugged me how even before he sets up the paper it seems like every recurring character in Ankh Morpork from Dibbler on up already knows him when they really have no reason to! I think that's probably my least favourite book of the 'later era' (After Small Gods or so) books.
