I think P3 is overall a stronger game than P4(mostly since it was fresh whereas P4 improved on it), so you're not missing out at all.
And even if you are watching the ER, you can still play P4 knowing that you won't make the same mistakes those guys did, and play it your own way.
Maybe if the gameplay was especially interesting, but it looks very standard JRPG. The appeal to me was all the social stuff. Whether or not they played the battle stuff "correctly" is irrelevant because the plot/social stuff is the most interesting to me and they covered that.
The combat is okay enough for me to be interested in playing P3, but still mostly interested in story. Even if the general consensus is that P4 is better I'll probably enjoy it.

P3's story is great. Also, the combat's got more to it than a standard RPG when you consider the fusion stuff, especially in P3 when you don't get full party control as an option, at all.
Clearly it's SMT1 that is the best shin megami tensei.
All kidding aside, I WOULD have liked P4 more if Elizabeth were there instead of Margret. I found Margret kinda bland in comparison. But that's just me.
Also, just finished heaven in P4...I'm on hard mode, right? This is supposed to be HARD, right?

I would consider that true if it were remade to today's standards. SMT1 had a fucking amazing story. It was an old SNES game though, so the plot was kind of... well... how most RPG plots separated themselves from the story back then, you know?
Still, I loved SMT1. And about the Elizabeth thing, it's strongly implied that
Elizabeth opted to stay with P3's protagonist however she could, so he wouldn't suffer alone for his sacrifice to seal Nyx.
So yeah, she wouldn't be in P4. It wouldn't make sense. Also, by the time you reach Heaven, and have the right personas, you can pretty much conquer anything... and were you doing straight-off-the-bat Hard, or New Game+ Hard?
I still think Persona 4 is better, mostly because the characters are way, way, way, waaaay better.
Junpei is by far the best character in Persona 3, mostly because he acts like a real person instead of an anime stereotype. The characters in Persona 3 can be cool, but they are pretty unrealistic and lacking in depth. The whole carpe diem, momento mori theme is awesome, but there's no way those characters would overcome their hardships and go on to fight so easily. At least, not EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
In Persona 4, psychological issues are not a hurdle on a path to becoming a stone cold badass. The turning point in each of the characters is not them "getting over" their problems, but acknowledging them. Because people don't always do huge 180s in growing up.
The characters in 4 also work with real issues. Complicated stuff. Not just "seize the day." Even the fucking mascot character is more human than the majority of P3's cast. Overall, because both games lean so heavily on their characters, this major difference brings P4 miles ahead of its predecessor.
Exactly.
Persona 4 is, aside from some iffy pacing, incredibly well-written for a JRPG. I liked 3 as much as most here, but the gap in quality is enormous.

Got the TDE on normal in Nocturne. I'm going to rebeat it with a full compendium and the Burial Chambers beaten. I want to do a Main Character/TDE/Hard mode challenge.
Something that made me wonder though,
At some point my main character changed from Fiend to Saint. Is this from completeing the Fifth Kalpa or is there some other requisite?
So... Red Rider is a dick. And way harder than White.
I'm going to need to make a mind/physical resistant team and come back.
When you're fighting him, Always cast debuffs on him. Always. Because, even when he always cancel the debuffs, is preferable to him casting Terrorblade again.
I was playing Persona 4 and I actually managed to beat the reaper. Everyone was level 64, except for Kanji who was level 63. Yukiko just kept on dying. I ended using up all ten Balm of Lifes that I had.
Every time I ever fought the Reaper, he was really dumb about it. Like, he would cast Bufudyne on Chie, Agidyne on Yukiko, then he'd toss a Mamudoon which wouldn't kill anyone (MC immune to Dark everyone else either lucky or saved by the S.Link bonus) and by then he'd be dead.
The Reaper really made me regret not putting Repel Dark on my Yoshitsune. It was there in the ingredients and everything but you know... hexagon fusion

Also I hate Aigis so there's that.
Edit: Also, Chidori.

It's also somehow even easier.

P3P
I cast Hama. It keeps missing.
On shadows weak to Light,
Why.

Of course, going from P3 to P4, I was almost blown away by the fact that they end up being pretty much guaranteed hits on enemies weak to them.

That video convinced me to play SMT1.
But yeah. That section is one of my favorite parts of the game. Shame you cant get her as a demon in SMT1.
So that's why the spell's called "Die for Me"
Then again, I didn't really LIKE strange journey, so it's not too surprising that I wouldn't remember.
If you don't, she asks you to die instead, and then helps you.
They do have the same engine and battle system though. Once you're comfortable in DDS, you should be able to move into Nocturne fairly easily.
So I'd recommend starting DDS first since Nocturne is tougher and less forgiving than DDS.
