Just out of curiousity, whats the benefit of having "accidents" on your memory card so you stay low ranked?
Because I know it's the reason I don't play online ever. I'm not very good, and I'd love to get better, but can't because I keep running into 9th Lords that had "accidents" are really way, way better than that and completely destroy me. So I learn nothing, have a terrible time...and they beat up someone that they are clearly miles ahead of...and have fun? I guess?
I don't understand it and it really killed the game for me. I had some great matches early on with other not-so-good players that were really friendly and fun and productive. But it doesn't happen anymore...

Well. Some people do it because...lower rank people will see your rank and quit on you, some higher ranks too.
Other do it, because some higher ranked people prey on lower ranks and it is nice to give them a little surprise.
Then you have to people who like reseting their rank just to raise it again.
Others do it, because they like beating up on newbies.
...So...a lot of reasons.
That being said...ranked matches are terrible...I mean MvC3's online is terrible in general and I'm not sure how much you can learn from it...but ranked was especially terrible.
I can't seem to beat weskers priority unless they do something stupid. If they just jump S into the low combo string I can block it but they're back in the air before I can counter attack. The lack of delay on his attacks make me salty. Is there anything I can do?

Push block him / back dash / teleport / armor attack him on the way down.

Make sure you're doing same-rank. You'll still run into 9th Lords who are better than they appear, but not as often (and they'll often have 30-2 w/l too). You could also do player matches, or join lobbies where you can examine each player's record before you play them. As for me, I do it for experiences like the one I detailed on the last page. I don't get anything that enjoyable very often, but obliterating a Master Lord because he decided to taunt the "newbie" one-too-many times is quite satisfying, and often results in snarky rage-mails.
I only search using the any-rank setting, and nearly all the low rankers I meet are people with dubious records, so definitely stay away from that. I'd hope for persistent server-side stats with UMvC3, but that would require actual support from Capcom, and we all know how that goes.
Yeah, it's not like SF where it's good enough to play and get badass. Especially when just one dropped combo = you're doomed.
This, combined with the local arcade here = you probably will get shot, killed my interest in MvC3 fast. It's not that I don't enjoy the game or love a huge variety of the characters (I do!) but the online competition is so awful it just felt pointless to learn.
Plus I'm really, really bad at it by nature. So, so bad.

Well, this part is just because it's so different than SF. I know I was horribad for the first 2-3 months I'd say. It just didn't click.
Never calling assists outside of combos or just not calling them enough.
Even now, I could be better, but at least I can use assists in mixup situations / create unblockable situations.
That just takes grinding.
Hopefully, UMVC3 fixes this mostly since part of the problem currently is the online population isn't huge to make sure you get people who live close by.

Fartacus: I stopped playing ranked around 5th lord because ranked matches are evil things. Its fun taking down 1st or higher but goddamn it fighters or 9th lords are the bane of my existence. I just assume that they are all the best players ever.
Personally I'm only an 8th Lord, not because I reset my rank or wanted to beat up on noobs, but because that's all I did of ranked. On top of that, I've played some very high ranked folk who frankly just aren't that good. So basically you should never take someone's rank as an indication of how good they are, it's a busted system even when people aren't resetting it.
Also I think I've figured out the formula for making a strong team. Take two top tier characters and one top tier assist (it can be on a shitty character, but should be spammable) and call it a day. Well I mean obviously you want them to be able to DHC well and whatnot but every strong player I've played seems to follow this formula, and even the EVO grand finals seems to confirm it...Really can't wait for Ultimate to hit and shake things up, hopefully for the better.
Despite the DHC glitch getting fixed, my buddy who was at Evo was saying how it felt like characters did more damage because so many characters had their HP shaved a bit or...well, maybe damage did go up.
HP being shaved is a big thing, tho (although Wesker deserved it).

Well he does have that really stupid tatsu, I guess. Though as far as health goes, most characters already die so easily now I can't imagine them being that largely different when Ultimate hits. Have there been any major health swings either way outside of Wesker? Most of the others I've heard of have been minor tweaks (though admittedly some of them didn't have much health to lose already). If nothing else xfactor damage being lessened should help a little.

it did look like characters were taking more damage. maybe they buffed overall damage to make up for X factor getting slammed with the nerf bat?
it could have also just been like that on the demo build to keep things moving along. who knows
That and it's easy to be wrong. The easy example used is some people saying Taskmasters charging star goes farther. It doesn't, from what buddy said, but dumb people said it did.

Wow - thank you as that's actually a very good list of reasons. Never thought about how badly a time a good, legit high-tier player would have with low tiers quitting constantly.
The whole online is awful and I can't wait for MvC3.
I had this idea I talked about with TempleWolf I believe (Google+ is making it harder to remember forum names as I now remember PEOPLE names!) where once UMvC3 comes out we can use the Google+ hang out feature and spectator mode for some fun RanBat and maybe even ChaosHat's school again. I never participated before because I am terrible and shy and the 1 on 1 matches without the ability to watch and learn from better people kind of intimidated me. I would love it if we all got in a queue, and then had some hang outs (or IRC if we didnt want it webcam based) and while matches are taking place people could maybe help us weaker folks out while we watch what's going on.

You... You realize that winning at this game is about picking good characters and assists, right? The top tiers are going to change in ultimate, but there will still be good characters, and good assists, and people will pick them to win. And there's nothing wrong with that.

People picking three random characters, or three point characters who contribute nothing worthwhile to each other, are already behind teams with actual synergy before the match even starts. This isn't KOF, it's Marvel.
Sometimes you just need to work on your character select skills. That's a part of the game, too - deal with it.
EDIT: Coincidentally, the video above actually contains an example of fucking up at the character select screen.
Mag/Zero/Wolvie is three point characters, only one of whom has an assist with appreciable outside-of-combo applications (hint: he's not in the back).

I'm trying to decide if I should play my "serious" team(s) in Ranked and possibly have less fun with the game, or play fun/random teams in Player Matches just to goof off.
Better yet, is anyone around right now that would like to join me in either of those?
On a related note: I want more that 3 teams slots in Ultimate. Not a huge demand, but there's not a lot of room for fun/themed teams after people put their main configs in there.
I need to learn to respect Super Armor again. The guys I usually play don't have characters with that attribute so I was getting smacked by Hulk and Sent's move a lot more that I would have liked to. Also, lag. Not sure what was up with that near the end, but it was making me drop my Tasky combos and it made me sad.
Yeah, the lag kind of hit me a bit too (the time I used Akuma's DP instead of beam was just uuuuugh). Anyway, GGs. Tasky and Wesker are really annoying for my team.
Tasky and Wesker are annoying for everyone, which is why I've been playing around with "fun" teams instead of going hard on Tasky/Wesker/Haggar. People don't seem to mind fighting Cap as much and he's fun to use once he starts something. I want to build a team around him and Spider-Man but they don't really seem to have great synergy.
Worst case scenario we can throw down on your systems to get tuned up for the real thing / console ourselves after devastating losses.

Haven't decided on whether I'll do teams yet. I think my brother wants to try to turn it into a one day thing, but it'd probably be easier and more entertaining to do both Friday and Saturday (or whenever the first two days of the tourney are). If I end up DOING THAT I'll just cobble together a team with some people from Maryland or you guys or WHATEVER.
What team are you going to run? Zero/Hulk/Wesker?
I can't decide between Spencer/Task/Haggar (or possibly ammy) or Skrull/Task/Haggar.
You... You realize that winning at this game is about picking good characters and assists, right? The top tiers are going to change in ultimate, but there will still be good characters, and good assists, and people will pick them to win. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Of course, it's just boring as can be to play them is all. I'm not saying people should use bad characters for the sake of using bad characters, either, it's just dull when the only people I play online are either A) total noobs or decent players who rely on a totally braindead strategy to win. There's nothing interesting about playing bad Ryu / Akuma / whatever for their lasers, or good Dante / Wesker / assist spam of their choice all the time. The game has plenty of characters who don't suck (but aren't top tier) and plenty of useful assists (but aren't able to be spammed mindlessly), but you just don't see them used at all anymore. I can't tell you the last time I saw, say, a She Hulk. It's disappointing. Good teams can be made without going about it all in that kind of manner, is I guess what I'm getting at.
Keep in mind I'm talking about unranked online play here. There's actually more character variety with the pros on stream and whatnot, which seems backwards to common conception but what can I say - I can only comment on what I'm seeing myself.
I absolutely can NOT play She-Hulk online. Lag kills jump loops and "run OTG run start stop relaunch". She's fun offline, but I don't do the whole offline tourney thing so I don't put much time onto her outside of arcade events and training mode in between online matches.
