This was mentioned in the Achievement thread, but I figured it was a big enough announcement to warrant its own thread.
The news from teamxbox.com -
"Microsoft officially announced today the Xbox Rewards program. Microsoft is teaming with up with Old Spice to launch the first Rewards Challenge.
The challenge: Increase your gamerscore by 1,500 between February 12 and April 12, 2007.
The reward:
Level 1 (Gamers who have an annual gamerscore between 0-4,999 at time of entry): Game Picture, Dashboard theme, Contra for Xbox LIVE Arcade
Level 2 (5,000-9,999 annual gamerscore): Level 1 Package, 100 Microsoft Points and a contest T-shirt
Level 3 (10,000+ annual gamerscore): Level 1 Package, 200 Microsoft Points, contest T-shirt and Fusion Frenzy 2
In order to participate, you need to have a valid Windows Live™ ID with your Xbox LIVE® gamercard linked, be a legal resident of the 50 United States and District of Columbia (expect future challenges to be global in scope) and at least thirteen years-old.
Be sure to log on to
www.xbox.com/rewards on February 12 to sign up for participation. Reward quantities are limited so gamers who reach the set goal will be awarded on a first come, first served basis only. "
Although I'm disappointed that I'm only in the Level 1 prize bracket, I'm still looking forward to getting a free copy of Contra as a reward for playing other games. And that Level 3 prize package is pretty sweet: free copy of Fusion Frenzy 2? Yes, please.
Posts
You know, back when the xbox had been out for a month or so, I swear Gamespot did an article on how to boost your gamescore by like 6k or something.....
The question is will the rentals of those games cost more than the cost of contra?
Satans..... hints.....
AGAIN.
I would definitly get the first 2 Levels and possibly even the third level, but o well, I'm very impressed my Microsoft for doing that.
Anyways, Contra shouldn't require any game renting if you have three or more games.

And hey, I want to rent Bullet Witch anyway.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
The possible prize levels only show what you are eligible to get if you fall within those amounts of points at the time of entry.
So if you have 4,000 points and rent a bunch of bullshit games to boost your gamerscore to 10,000, you still only get Contra.
However you'll also get a level upgrade so that you can participate in the Level 2 (or 3) prizes during the next Rewards contest.
edit: But if you can get yourself to above 10,000 before February 12th you can get Fusion Frenzy, so you should probably start renting EA games.
No Video Marketplace either.

what Mono said was also true.
I already have Contra.
Can probally blame old spice for that, since they are sponsering it.
Fucking Dondums.
It's better than not getting free stuff for playing your 360 games.
No kidding. I think this is the motivation I need to get around to playing (note, playing not beating) Kameo & Enchant Arms. And I'll be replaying Dead Rising no doubt.
And for some reason, I thought this expired before Guitar Hero 2 was released. That it doesn't pleases me greatly.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
Shame there won't be any achievements for the Halo beta, I imagine that's gonig to be the most played thing on Live at the time.
Mass Effect? Guitar Hero 2?
Xbox Live Gamertag: Suplex86
Now I actually have a reason to go back and play Madden '06.
Europe and the rest of the world need to get their laws regarding contests in line.
On the most recent OXM disc, they offer a bunch of XBL games, including Contra and Ms. Pac-Man, and since my 360 is about 2000 miles away from me now, I can't tell if they are the full games or demos. The disc contents page in the magazine doesn't tell anything.
Anyone know the answer?
"Xbox Rewards:
Take Your Gaming to the Next Level
Something new and exciting is happening to the way you experience games. On February 12, Xbox® is teaming up with Old Spice to bring you Xbox Rewards and the Old Spice Experience Challenge.
Xbox Rewards offers casual and hardcore gamers alike the chance to earn actual rewards for doing what they enjoy—playing games, earning achievements, and having fun. Xbox Rewards is a free program, but in order to register you will need to have a valid Windows Live™ ID with your Xbox Live® gamercard linked.
The program is launching in the U.S. only, and you must be 13 years or older to participate.
For some Xbox Rewards Challenges, you will need to have access an Xbox 360â„¢ console with a memory unit or a hard drive, an Xbox Live Gold or Silver-level subscription, and specific Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games. Check out http://www.xbox.com/live/memberships for more information on Xbox Live memberships.
Participation
After registering, you will automatically be placed into one of three Rewards Levels based on your current gamerscore. Your level will determine the rewards you are eligible for during each Challenge. The more you play, the higher you can advance, and the bigger the pay-out.
Level 1 (0 – 4,999 annual Gamerscore): You are developing your skills and gaining experience. Take some time to get used to the program and learn your way around. The Challenges will typically be easier and the rewards smaller.
Level 2 (5,000 – 9,999 annual Gamerscore): We are going to turn up the heat a bit. You have proved that you know how to play and are willing to put in the gaming time to reap the benefits. The Challenges will get a bit more difficult. Never fear, the reward value goes up as well.
Level 3 (over 10,000 annual Gamerscore): This is an arena filled with the who's who of gaming. We don't want to claim that Level 3 is an exclusive club, but if you find yourself winning Challenges here, you've obviously pulled out the big guns, so enjoy while it lasts.
Xbox Rewards is not a hall of fame, and there are no honorary life members. In order to maintain your Rewards Level, you have to continue to play on top. Rewards Levels are based on how many Gamerscore you gain each calendar year.

As the community responds, the program will grow and new challenges will be announced. Some will be open only to certain Rewards levels, some may be specific to certain games, and others won't even require you to turn on your Xbox 360.
Foul Play
Xbox will be monitoring the Challenges and taking the necessary precautions to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience. The Xbox Rewards terms and conditions will detail the eligibility requirements. Check back after February 12 for official terms and conditions. Cheaters need not apply.
Get Involved
On February 12, visit www.xbox.com/rewards for more information and be one of the first to register for Xbox Rewards and the Old Spice Experience Challenge.
* The Old Spice Challenge is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States (includes D.C.) age 13+ who are Xbox Rewards members. Limit one (1) Rewards Package per person. This offer expires on April 12, 2007, while supplies last. For Xbox Program Terms & Conditions, check back here after February 12."
So just finishing the challenge knocks you up to the next prize bracket for the next challenge. Sounds good to me.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
When Blockbuster had that "rent games over and over for 20$ for a month", we rented every single game -just because-. We actually haven't rented much since then :P
I rent all sorts of horrible games just because I have Gamefly. I have Call of Duty 3 out right now for the Wii.
My only complaint with this thing is... I already have Contra, so I don't feel like bothering to participate. It would be nifty if the award were an unreleased Live Arcade game, to guarantee people don't actually have it.
hmmm...
It promotes people going out of there way, yes, but doesn't most rewards require you to go out of your way to achieve them? If only everything was handed to you for nothing.

I'm exaggerating of course - my decision to move to the States wasn't motivated by the poor treatment of European gamers, although it was an afterthought. I'll miss out on this particular contest, but I'll be ready for the next. Actually, Microsoft haven't been that bad in Europe, so I expect a similar contest will come our way later this year.
Besides which, Worms is rumoured to hit XBLA on the 14th, so points can be earned there.
How do minor rewards like 200 ms points make playing games like a job? Seriously. It's free shit. I don't see anything to complain about.
