Max Payne 1 and 2 - Still awesome

Yes, he looks like he's constipated. Yes, the game is kind of old. Yes, these games are awesome.

I know there's a Max Payne 3 thread around here somewhere, but I'm honestly not interested in the game by the looks of it right now. But I'm starting to replay through the first two and I just wanted to reminisce about these games with you guys and even discuss some of the mods, which I can say I've honestly never really messed around with, though I've heard there are some good ones.

If you've never played Max Payne 1 or 2, first of all download the Max Payne bundle from steam for 15 dollars. I can almost guarantee that your computer will play the games perfectly. I know mine sucks and I've never had any problems.

Anyway I can honestly say that these games are in my top 10 list. The characters are cool and the game does an awesome job with it's environments. Max Payne 1 takes place in NYC during a huge blizzard, so you literally see no one and feel all alone in the huge city. To this day whenever I'm outside during a snowstorm for whatever reason I always think of Max Payne. The game gets in your head and I think that's a sign of an awesome game.

Not the best example, but it's also one of the few games I know of where you can go into a room full of bad guys and do this.

Also, you might not want to watch the movie if you've never played the games. It might make you think the games suck, and they don't!

I've also been thinking of doing a let's play, which would be my first, on one of the games, but I'm not sure if it's been done or if anyone would even be interested.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are two of the finest games I've ever played. I know people will talk about the shooting and telling you to install Cinematic Mod or play Hall of Mirrors and Kung Fu this, or Max and Mona omg story! Sure I love all that, but what elevates it for me is all the self-referential stuff, particularly how MP2 just goes nuts with that whole angle.

    Basically I love Sam Lake.

When you have lines like "He was trying to buy more sand for his hour glass. I wasn't selling any." or my favourite "Up on that rooftop I was a Ninja, my Kung Fu was strong. I wasn't kidding anybody. At best I was Superman on kryponite, about to fall into where it all went down." You know its gonna be great.

Sad they're sprucing up the third, I kinda liked the dark, gritty feel of the classics.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are my favorite games I think, I wish I still had my Max Payne mousepad that came with the first game :(

I never figured out why, but I loved Max Payne 2 yet got terminally bored of the original game after 1-2 hours and never finished it.

Your OP was better then mine, I gotta admit. Still needs some Late Goodbye to set the mood. I still haven't played 2, how does it compare to 1?

Oh, and Stranglehold has gameplay very similar to Max Payne, you should all check it out.

Yeah and Stranglehold is the perfect example of what makes Max Payne 1-2 good and why Max Payne 3 will be awful. With out the story and the writing it just sort of falls flat and gets kinda boring. Stranglehold has tons of cool scenery and interesting moves but the game feels so meh because the story is poor and the writing isn't much better.

If I had to sum it up..

It seems like they're trying to make Max Payne 3 actually look like Max now, which is good.

For the love of god, don't just say that without posting a link.

Edit: Never mind, I found two new screenshots that were posted on twitter. The one that looks like Max from MP2 has gotta be from a flashback or something, because the other is still baldy, bearded Max. Plus there's the gray color scheme in the former.

The awful, blindingly obvious, semi-dorky references made the game great.

One of these days I'll get Max Payne 2, and I expect my mind to destroy itself trying to pick up all the shout outs.

MP1 is top 10 material, and it still plays fantastically. Most older games feel like they lose some sense of movement or you get used to modern features, but MP1 still handles exactly as you'd want it to.

I remember all the elaborate shenanigans I had to do in order to get MP1's sound running on Vista. I did it twice, and would spend another hour or so again if I had to in order to get it working. I might just go ahead and buy the pack on Steam, though, since I'm sure that fixes all that noise.

I never could get Kung Fu mod running though. Has anyone gotten it to work on the Steam version of MP1?

The version on Steam does not have the sound fixed, but there's a simple script floating around that you just have to run once the game is installed to fix it

I played MP1 and 2 for the first time last month. Didn't like 2 as much as 1, but 1 has one of my favorite game stories. I'm a sucker for detective stories and film noir.

Anyway, the sound for MP1 is stilled messed up on Vista but there's a really simple patch in a sticky thread on the steam forums. Takes about 10 seconds to install after you download it. (Edit: I am so slow.)

Looking at the screenshots for 3 I have to say Max Payne in a Hawaiian shirt is just wrong. Whose idea was that?

But back to the conversation about the first two, there was something I really hated about the first game. The house maze.

Man everything about 3 makes it look horrible. The retardedly generic bald and beardy look, the tropical setting, that stupid ass shirt. It all looks like some terrible max payne 2 mod.

    Kind of like this one...

in my defense, the two "new" screen shows from 2 days ago are from cut scenes and look exactly like everything else from 2 years ago. I mean even in the one with the hair in it, you kind of go "I wonder how many scaffoldings you have to walk through in this game?"
