Nintendo's E3 this year will probably be something like this:
- Super Mario Bros. 3DS live demo with Miyamoto.
- Zelda: Skyward Sword gets release date.
- 10 minutes of graphs where Nintendo holds the largest portion of the pie chart, whatever that means.
- Trailers for several 3DS games we already know about (Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing)
- Last batch of DS titles to be released within the year. Fire Emblem 12 and Layton 4 among the most expected stuff.
- Couple of Wii titles announced (Likely Xenoblade, probably Last Story if we're lucky)
- Detailed info on 3rd party 3DS titles (Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, etc.)
- Surprise 3DS title. probably F-Zero or Metroid.
- Project Cafe announced.
- Super Megaton game for Project Cafe. Internet will go crazy.
I agree with everything except for the very last point.

One interesting thing I think Microsoft has in it's back pocket is the same thing Apple has - announcements of things that are not supposed to be big announcements.
I work for a TV station and we did TWO stories this morning on the WHITE iPhone. Its fucking WHITE. How is this NEWS. Or anything worth ANNOUNCING? Apple has this strange way (two button mouse! SD card slot on the iPad! CAMERAS!) of announcing things that most other, comparible devices have had for AGGGGGGES, and it's all the sudden a new "feature" for people to get all excited over.
So Microsoft could very easily get people pretty hyped up and excited by announcing:
-Hard Drive support for any drive you own
-Cloud storage
-A fucking WEB BROWSER
-Blu-Ray player (would NEVER happen, but fits the idea)
or some other "features" that other consoles and electronics already have, and people would get really excited.
I have a feeling this new type of disc that people got for the next dashboard update will get a good chunk of time too.
You forget, Apple has the Reality Distortion Field thing going on that no other company has. White iPhone? Holy fucking shit amazing! Black Wii? Erm, cool, I guess. Other companies only wish they could get people so violently excited over so little. Those things you listed, for instance, would get muted appreciation by tech nerds and complete non-reaction from everyone else. (Remember, Sony gave the PS3 cloud storage and, well, no one really noticed.)
i think bundled in a "fall update" announcement though, they have a lot of features that wouldn't be too difficult to impliment that all announced at once as a free update to the dashboard would generate some good will towards the console (in addition to making it seem like they don't NEED to announce the 720 yet, because they're still updating and enhancing your 360!)
Also the first console that lets me stream music from my Amazon could drive, wins my money. I love that thing and want to be able to stream music everywhere.
Basically I love the "cloud" idea, but until one company kind of makes itself uniform across all my devices (amazon/google have my phone and home computer covered), I dont see any taking off.

"It's got Toy Story graphics!"
It did. Sort of.
Toy Story 3 came out last year. So the boxart had it.
It seems highly unlikely that either Microsoft or Sony will try to beat Nintendo to the punch at this point with their new systems. The big question is whether or not they try to release at about the same time as Nintendo or if they'll decide to wait a year or two.
Microsoft seems like they're in a good position with both the XBox 360 and Kinect being very popular at the moment. If they wanted to, they could probably release a drastically enhanced 360 with a much better version of Kinect included in every box. One of the main problems with Kinect in its current incarnation is that the 360 itself wasn't designed for it. With an extra year or two and a more powerful system designed with it in mind, it's not inconceivable that the next version of the XBox could have a Kinect with minimal lag and the ability to detect fine motions like fingers as the default.
As for Sony, who knows?
I do know that Nintendo announcement of a new system makes me highly unlikely to pursue XBLA development. Soonest we could have an XBLA game ready would be the end of 2012 or early 2013, but if Microsoft is already diverting attention to a new system by that time, what's the point?
I think the Cafe demo will actually feature more about the interface of the system than the actual games. The code name of the system is the real telling point here - cafe. To me that means their goal for this system was in some way like a coffee shop - so we'll see a very strong social focus with this console. I'm betting we'll see an angle of "Communications hub" with this one - the screen/camera combo on a controller seems to hint that way as well.
We'll see games, but we'll see them in the sense of what new connectivity will the Cafe bring to these franchises.
Expect the 720 at e3. Expect news about the next Playstation. Expect the next Nintendo console. This is the year.
I'll bet you $20 (Australian, not that worthless American muck) that at best, we'll only hear vague rumours about the 720 and PS4. I mean, do you really think Sony are going to announce the PS4 at the same conference they're unveiling the NGP? I really don't think so.
Also, uh the PS3 is dead last? It's only like 2-3 million units behind the 360...
It wasn't loved but I'm pretty sure the reception was a lot nicer than Nintendo's got the year before when it was pretty much just as boring.
Nintendo's 2009 E3 conference was pretty brutal, though. While the 2010 MS conference was pretty boring, the Kinect stuff was way more interesting than Wii Music and the Vitality Sensor...
It might just be the nature of E3 in general, than any sort of conspiracy, but overall, people (at least at these forums) tend to be much harsher of Microsoft and Sony at E3 than Nintendo. Microsoft's history with PC gaming could be part of that. If Nintendo has a boring E3, it's "Oh, well, I'm sure they'll turn it around, they're just kind of slow this year." If Microsoft has one, it's very much more "DOOOOOOOMMMM! YOU FOOLS, DOOOOOMMM!"
I'm just giving observations, though, so purely anecdotal.
I don't know about that, maybe you're letting last year cloud your judgement but in 2008 and 2009, I thought people were pretty scathing of Nintendo's conferences. Last year they turned things around, with a fantastic conference that I thought blew Sony and Microsoft away. It's so weird that a lot of the 3DS hype died off as quickly as it did before launch.
Sony's one last year had a lot good content, but their problem was with the pacing and presentation (which has been their problem for years). Talking and demonstrations tend to either be too long or too short, as if the entire conference has been thrown together at the last minute. And Tretton seems like he's going to break down into tears if he fucks up, he has no idea what he's doing.
Microsoft's conferences generally tend to be very thought out and planned well (hence the pre-recorded Kinect demonstrations). The problem last year was that the content on show was boring as all hell. They opened with the interesting stuff and about a third through transitioned into a snoozefest, before trying to wake everyone up by throwing 360's at them.
Oh and the problem with practically any party game being demonstrated on stage, whether it's Wii Music, Dance Central or Rock Band, is that you really don't get any impression of how fun they are unless you actually play them yourself. So at a conference you're just watching a bunch of people make idiots of themselves on stage and it's never interesting.
I agree with everything except for the very last point.

Eh, I thought the PS2 tech demos were pretty accurate actually. The FFVIII opening recreation in particular isn't even remotely impressive. And Silent Hill 3 managed to get pretty close to the old man.
This gen was pretty bad though, some of them were more hopeful dreams than tech demos. Killzone 2, Madden and Fight Night stick out in my mind, Madden probably being the worst.
XBLA will likely be forwards compatible I suppose.
True, but a big point in releasing on XBLA would be to get marketing support from Microsoft. If their big focus at the time of release is the XBox 720, I gotta imagine that marketing for an XBLA title from a small indie studio at the same time would be minimal.
Of course, that brings up the idea of trying to release on the XBox 720's version of XBLA early in the system's life, but that brings up a new set of problems. The more I think about it, the more I'm coming to the conclusion that we should just focus on the PC and be done - no worries about trying to bet on which console/mobile horse is going to end up winning or having to relearn a new development environment every 5-6 years.
I still believe Nintendo announced the vitality sensor just to see if any other companies would introduce one next year.
If so, they snagged Ubisoft, hook, line, and sinker.
Speaking of Ubisoft (and just E3 in general), last years really was full of so much craziness. Please, Konami... don't let me down this year.

Forward compatability between the DD services is going to be one of the more interesting questions as the next gen comes upon us.
Who thought it through? What do the contracts say? Will it be case by case? DS to 3DS is going to show what Nintendo did on that front in a few weeks but that particular service only started a few years ago on a system that was designed with its successor clearly in mind.

I guess that's something you'll have a better idea of after the PC versions the games you've already have made have come out, but I think the PC market will probably be quite receptive to the type of games you make.
I guess that probably kills off the hope of a bunch of awesome wii game announcements at e3.
They still have to fill in the 2011 holiday season, with Cafe coming in 2012. Expect something in that time.
A new console from Microsoft would be cool but we certainly don't need one just yet, Nintendo need a hardware refresh because, like Scarab said, 'at this moment in time the Wii is the most primitive console, graphically and in terms of its interactive technologies.' It really looks like old-hat at this point. 360 is aging much better, like PS3, and I'd argue this gen has certainly aged better than previous generations, but new hardware for both Microsoft and Sony in 2013 would be a good idea.
I think it's more they need one because everyone owns a Wii already.
Not to mention, if Project Cafe has graphics similar to the 360, it would also be a good time to show what their next platform should be capable of, the 'true next-next-gen', as it were.
Like I said before, we're starting to reach a point where, for the mainstream consumer, 'more graphics' isn't really going to provide as much of a boost as it has in the past. The differences of 720 to 1080p, or 30 to 60fps, is moot for most people. Add in rising dev costs to develop for the higher graphical fidelity and some issues begin to appear.
This is why I think Nintendo can aim at 'just above 360/PS3' and possibly succeed. They're adding features they were missing. I'm not sure what Microsoft or Sony can bring to the table.
Thing is if they just gave the new machines improved specs all around they could stop stuff like texture pop in and add AA and the improved textures/resolutions that the PC versions of mulitplats have now.
Would allow them to keep the same productions costs for games but still bang on about graphics.
This is why I think Nintendo can aim at 'just above 360/PS3' and possibly succeed. They're adding features they were missing. I'm not sure what Microsoft or Sony can bring to the table.
Better, faster system memory and processors? A Blu-Ray drive and 3D support for the Xbox? An original thought from SONY?
The level of advancement may begin to taper off, but there is always something that can be done. Otherwise your statement might as well be 'I'm not sure what PC can bring to the table.'
PC development has sort of stagnated since the release of Crysis 1 when it comes to graphics. The big growth market has been in the portal/browser based time waster game markets and the interesting dynamics brought by various DD stores.
I'm betting that SONY announces that their controllers will have video screens in them and that they've been working on that all along!
That's the spirit! :P
No, no, no. First Sony will say Nintendo's controllers are stupid, THEN they will announce their own controllers with video screens and they've been working on them all along.
"We're not copying Nintendo because you see, these are black."
I think the majority of people are happy enough with the 360/PS3 as they are, which is why I don't think we'll see anything about a new console from either of them until next year (unless one of them hits the panic button).
Nintendo can come in just ahead of the other two and still get the "ZOMG GRAFIX!!" factor working in their favour.
The only place Sony/MS can go from here is native 1080p for all games, and put devs under even more pressure while doing it.
That, or do something really crazy. I'd like to see something crazy.
