This talk of xbox 360 controllers is making me interested in GOG, because I'm shying away from more keyboard and mouse use right now. Can anyone recommend any good games that are particularly suited to the 360 controller?
I heard that FS2 wasn't horrible with a gamepad, though obviously a stick would be better

I can confirm that Crusader sucks with a gamepad. Left/Right rotates you, up moves forward and down moves back. Really the best way to play it is with the numpad. Unless there's a setting I'm missing.

The program X-Padder may help you there, it'll let you remap just about any gamepad. I know it works with a 360 controller.
Had the game crash twice and lock my system up. Had to restart both times. End task did nothing, as did Alt + F4, Alt + Tab or any other combos I can think of.
There were two opportunities for other NPCs to help me get into the city but I wanted no part of their unsavory offers, preferring the honest, straight route. I guess this breaks the game in some way because if you don't take their offers there is no other way inside the city. Tried to get in but the guards wouldn't let me in. They wanted 100g. I only had 35. I spent an hour wondering the country side picking up random items and selling them all to the merchant outside to get the 100g needed to get inside the city.
Spent an hour walking around, talking to random people looking for work, getting led in circles or killed by random people picking fights with me. Went outside the city to "earn my keep" and was killed by a pack of rats just outside the gates. Tried running them to the guards but the rats ran back and the guards didn't help. Tried to dodge + sidestep and parry their bites but the controls weren't responsive enough to allow for this. Also tried kiting them with my short bow and using local cover to even the odds. The game also didn't allow for this and the camera kept locking and spinning or I kept getting stuck on terrain or debris.
Going to be honest here.
I kind of hate this game. I'm trying really, really hard to be patient and learn the game but I don't think i've played a more unfriendly and frustrating game in recent memory.
Tried that. Saved the game and went through the entire tree, selecting all possible options. It all ended in either
A. Join the militia. I tried that and the guards and all the gates wouldn't accept me.
B. Roam around until you collect 100g and bribe me.
C. Tell me about the Eye and your quest, which they didn't believe.
Believe me. I took my time and read through my options. Regardless, frustrating experience. The lack of polish and accessibility is a pretty big hurdle for me on this one.
It is just so incredibly irritating to me anytime anyone goes "this game won't be exactly like the last ones therefore it will SUCK" in such an entitled way before any information about the game is actually known, or before we've seen actual gameplay, as though the name itself were so holy that how dare they use it for their video game, those assholes
It's spectacularly irritating that apparently we've gotten to the point that we don't even need screenshots for a game to be released to declare how little hope we have for it and how much better the old games were
It's like everyone forgot what happened when Fallout 3 was announced and a bunch of whiny babies flipped their goddamn shit and we all made fun of them for it and Fallout 3 turned out to be awesome
And now apparently it is the cool thing to do
I already laid out pretty clearly what I was saying in my second post. Yes there’s the potential for it to be a good game in itself. No, I don’t believe it’s going to be a tactical game. I don’t recall saying ANYTHING along the lines of "this game won't be exactly like the last ones therefore it will SUCK". What I have said is that I’ve got very little hope in it being a tactical game. Even a First Person one.
I also never said anything about “how much better the old games were” either, so let me clear THAT up for you as well before you go and put more words in my mouth. I don’t hold Syndicate up on some sort of freaking pedestal. Frankly, I hated Syndicate Wars, and the first Syndicate even if released today, has loads of poorly implemented and often outright pointless gameplay mechanics right at its core that would make it unplayable or at least extremely irritating today. So now that that’s out of the way, that doesn’t change me wanting it to be a tactical game.
You know what? I’ll even ADMIT that I was stupid in my wording of my first post. I emphasised it being an FPS, when that’s not really the issue at all. Even an FPS can make for solid tactical gameplay and a wider meta-game, basically following those aspects that made Syndicate what it was. I just don’t believe Starbreeze (or anyone else for that matter) is going to make a game in that vein, First Person or not.
And don't deny that you were shitting on it, because you were. It's one thing to go "eh, it's not an isometric strategy game, so I am not interested in it," it is quite another to go "I have zero hope for this game especially after what happened to XCOM which we also haven't seen actual gameplay footage of yet I am a whiny PC baby weh weh weh"
Charming. How about this: The isometric part? I don’t give a crap about that, and I apologise for bringing up the issue of it being an FPS. I was wrong to do so. The strategy / tactical part? Now that I DO care about, and I don’t believe it’s going to be coming. On EITHER part, yeah, I’ll deny I was “shitting on it”, but you seem to have already made up your mind there no matter how many times I say the converse. Unless of course by that you mean my saying “it’s not really going to take much of anything from the first game other than the setting”. In which case I guess I am. Of course I also said I’ll happily be proven wrong on that, much like I’m still waiting on XCOM for the same reasons. So goodness knows where THAT puts me on the spectrum of people to loathe, or whatever. Either way I’m going to ask you to turn down the rage a few hundred decibels because I don’t believe I’m saying what you seem to think I am (and that’s probably more my fault).
Or not, if you want. I understand that you (seem to at least) also find it utterly reprehensible that I’d say the game probably is going to have few or even any of those aspects beforehand. Fine, but I’m still going to say that: The chances of it are pretty much slim-to-none, and I’m trending towards none.
I noticed in the Dungeon Keepers directory it has some stuff that appears to be there to improve the graphics, but when I try to use the tool it complains that the game isn't installed. Has anyone gotten this to work?
Try using admin privileges and making sure its pointed at the right directory.
Yeah, no go. I think it is a permissions problem. Windows is so overprotective that even with admin rights, I still can't change directory settings or write to protected directories. I fucking loathe Windows so much.
If you don't know already, never, ever install a game into a Program Files directory under Vista or Win7.
That really doesn't excuse M$ from this idiocy.
Your posts are making me not like you at all.
I'm not sure what Microsoft's profits have to do with a game from 1993 not working well in WIndows 7. Trying to sell extra copies of DOS while twirling their mustaches?
X-com doesn't share anything with the original except aliens. This is like saying the new one would be as valid a Duke Nukem sequel as an X-com sequel. It's intellectual nepotism.
Have they produced a timeline for Alpha Centauri coming available?
Because I have quite a bit of work I need to get done before then.
They haven´t given a specific date yet but I think (hope) it will be next week. Considering the 20+ games they promised at 3 games a week it will take them 6 weeks to launch them all. More than enough time to close those other deals and start doing the same thing with LucasArts or one of the other publishers they are working with.

They did announce a rough date for the end of June to release their next round of games, of which Alpha Centauri was a part of.

Uh. What?
They are attempting to move more units of the new "X-com" game because of it's supposed pedigree. The game has gotten more attention by several times because of the name but it bears very little resemblance to the other works that established that name.
It is trying to leverage the name for additional benefits than the game could earn on its own merits.
While it is a little weird and it more a metaphorical usage I think the link is clear.
It is also sort of like branding but branding is a neutral word where this behavior deserves a special, negative, word.

That's a side effect of nepotism, and not what nepotism is. Which makes what you're saying practically regicide. Or something.

I really want to jump on your argument and try to defend XCOM (no dash) and point out that you are making a theory based on a concept video. However my gut, my memory, and the lack of any article talking about how the makers loved the original X-Com, force me to accept that your theory and opinion are the smart choice in this race.

Goddamn that Flail SCP video never gets old. The amazing thing is that sucker was created about five years ago.
So dudes and dudettes who haven't played that game and are hella interested from that montage (which is all of you because if you aren't then that means you have no heartbeat)? The up-to-date sourceport looks even better.
I really just want to buy the entire Interplay catalog. I rather hope it goes on sale at some point. Looking at it, I dont see one game I'd regret buying. Maybe not love, but definitely no regrets.
Whats the best way for someone to experience FS2 (and 1 maybe, I thought I saw a remake using FS2) if they never finished it before? I know I installed FSOpen on my GoG copy but I can't remember exactly which mods / campaigns I'd want to use for the base-game experience.

Did you play Yakkety Sax music in the background while the wolves chased you? If you read the manual, this technique is vital to success.
Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst

Talk to the guards at the gate while wearing respectable clothes ...
A. Join the militia. I tried that and the guards and all the gates wouldn't accept me.

And here's where to go to make Freespace 2 all pretty like those screenshots.
EDIT: At some point, one of these will come in handy for Freespace 2.
