some people are able to keep their touchscreens immaculate for years but if you have the slightest bit of doubt as to your ability to do that yourself it's worth the effort
I don't think anyone will be able to keep the top screen immaculate since the bottom of the 3DS rubs it when closed.
This makes screen protectors pretty much mandatory for the 3DS.
I haven't seen a single mark on my top screen from the bottom rubbing against it, though I've seen a lot of people post about it.
I guess the little rubber things on the top of mine are sticking out properly? I carry it around in pockets, and I haven't really taken any care to avoid putting pressure on it when it's closed. Hell, I shake the thing around like a mad man to get coins.
Is this just a vocal minority, or am I "one of the lucky ones?" People talk about it like it's just part of the system design.

I think it's a vocal minority.
I could add to the circumstantial evidence and say it's never happened to me/I've never seen it, but then two others would reply that it shows up for them all the time.
It took some time for them to appear on my DS.
But the fact that the DS comes packaged in a protective bag and with a protective sheet between the screens tells me it is quite possible for it to happen.
Maybe the borders of the lower screen accumulated dirt or something or something.
The circular slider leaves a mark too.

I noticed the light marks on my top screen the second or third day of owning my 3DS. Admittedly, I might have pushed the system closed tightly, due to trying to get it to fit in a DSi case, but even since then, outside of that case, I still see the marks. It doesn't bug me that much, especially since I have screen protectors on there, but they still show up even today. I've considered adding something to the rubber stoppers to get them to work better, but the grander question is: Why does the bottom screen have that bezel in the first place?

My old DS had these weird water-marked smudges on the top and bottom screen. Still played it. Are scratches really ruining the experience, or are we just feeling overdramatic today?
oh get off your high horse
whacking a new car with a shopping cart doesn't stop it running but knowing that little ding is there still sucks
I still have those smudges. DO I NEED TO SHOW YOU THOSE SMUDGES!?!
Speaking of dings, my 3DS also has a ding right next to the right camera lens. Like, a tiny little hole. It's almost cute.
Are you sure it's not the indicator light for the outer camera?

I have the top screen marks, but I've since taken care to close the screen very gently. I suspect they may come from letting it snap shut. It doesn't really snap, it's softer than that, but I don't know how else to describe it.
We will see if my theory holds, or if I am just another internet crackpot.
I was noticing the marks on the top screen (left side only, so far). It's the whole reason that when I applied the screen protectors a week after buying it, I bothered to also apply the top screen. I'm hoping it adds some protection... from, something. Also, This is an expensive new toy, I've been babying it so I'm certainly not closing it too hard or anything.

I got my Nyko super battery + cradle today. Still adjusting to the new grip, but overall I like it.
That was a rousing session of SF with MarioG. It's fun to find out which characters I completely suck with.

It's murder on the thumb though. At one point I jostled the 3DS so hard the top screen folded in on me during a match. Such is the ups and downs of owning a handheld.

What's great is that the person you fought can't send you a message saying you're a scrub and that he would have won if he had have been using his main character!

With whom he had around 200BP. But I've only got around 500BP so it still counts.

I've sort of preempted people calling me a scrub anyway: I set my title to 'in training'. It's OK Nintendo, you can implement messaging now, because there are no insults left.
The retailer I got my 3DS from threw in a set of these for free - being in Asia, though, all the instructions were in Japanese. Still figured it out, though, and it's a really ingenious method of installation - for the curious: instead of the usual "peel off protective layer and stick sticky side to screen" which always screws up (for me, anyway), there're two bits of tape that you stick down to the device which lines the protector up with the screen. Then you pull a tab which peels off the protective bit on the underside (while pressing down on the top), which sticks the protector onto the screen. Finally, you peel the protective layer off of the top (now that the protector is attached), which removes the tape from step 1.
Genius. Think I got some dust underneath the protector on my top screen, though

Well crap. I was wondering why my sound on the 3DS has sucked so bad - the right speaker is completely dead, and has been since I got it. I just never really noticed until I started playing DS games on it in Stereo.
Let's see how long the repair/return process is! Oh boy!

I am continously amazed at how long Shadow Wars is. I thought for sure I would be done now but the campaign just keeps going, which is nothing to say for the skirmish maps I keep unlocking.
Also, curse you for putting Banshee's +melee damage talent way at the end! I think they secretly know I go around every map stabbing everyone
Was doing a streetpass battle today in Samurai Warriors and after I won and got my weapon my 3DS claimed that my game wasn't inserted, effectively making me lose the streetpass. WTF.
I've noticed similar problems too, i.e. open up my DS from sleep mode to be greeted with black screens, or sometimes when I insert a game it'll think the game isn't there and I have to insert it again. Anyone else been having similar issues?

My card slot seems to be stupid, too. Sometimes I have to insert a game several times before it shows up on the home screen, and sometimes I have to restart the system before it will work.

I've had the card pop out of my 3DS while in my pocket a couple of times. Bit annoying, and I don't remember that ever happening with my DS/DS Lite.

I've had similar things happen, the 3DS won't recognize the game is inserted to begin with, the game actually pops out while walking with it. I don't know what causes it, other than release-console-itis.

Heads up for anyone looking to score some more games, from CAG:
Best Buy has a buy 2 select 3DS games and get a free $10 GC promotion. All current 3DS games are at MSRP of $39.99 except Pilotwings Resort and Super Street Fighter IV:3D. These games are on sale at $29.99.
This offer is available in-store and online. Thanks to Enuf for the in-store verification.
So yes, if you wanted SSFIV and Pilotwings, you can score them together for $60 plus a $10 gift card -- making it equivalent to the launch-week TRU deal if you price-matched it at Best Buy.
My card slot seems to be stupid, too. Sometimes I have to insert a game several times before it shows up on the home screen, and sometimes I have to restart the system before it will work.
This happened to both my DS and DS Lite, but relatively late in their lifespans and it was sporadic enough for me not to care too much. If this is happened to your 3DS now, though, I'd go ahead and get it repaired before it gets worse.
The only hardware hitch I've had so far is a one-time lockup during Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. I had the wi-fi on, and I didn't even get that "black screen of death," just a full-on lockup. Had to turn the system off and on, and I haven't had a problem since (though I've switched my wi-fi off while playing Shadow Wars).
Ghost Recon reportedly causing crashes with WiFi on is the only reason I haven't picked it up.
Street Fighter 4 and short bursts of Pilotwings (which is really higher quality than it's getting credit for despite some glaring omissions) are plenty to keep me busy for now.

Just to not encourage shoddy development or what? The crashes aren't harmful to the system, it's easy to turn wifi on and off with the physical switch and there's no reason to have it on while playing GR anyway.

It's Streetpass and no, the game doesn't need to be running.
The whole point of Streetpass is that data from multiple games can be saved to the system and shared automatically outside of the games.
Street Fighter 4 and short bursts of Pilotwings (which is really higher quality than it's getting credit for despite some glaring omissions) are plenty to keep me busy for now.
