Just curious, are there any Ocarina of Time naysayers who picked up a 3DS? Seems like most everyone is going to pick that one up, but I think an argument can be made that it's "just another remake." Seems like we're going to have pretty close to a 1-to-1 attachment rate once it comes out, though.
Personally, I love Ocarina of Time, and cannot wait for the 3DS version. Anybody feel strongly otherwise?
Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game, so while I enjoyed Ocarina of Time the first time, it annoys me to no end that they've stuck with the same thing ever since (or made the controls even worse with the DS games). Well except for Minish Cap I guess.
However, it looks very pretty and I am going to buy it because Nintendo and me are pals 4 life.
Also - they've already said they're going to be adding in more robust messaging for the friend list stuff, I'm guessing it will come with the web browser and store update if not sooner. No need for people to go crying doom yet!
Also also I decided I have had a new Nintendo console and no first party game for long enough, so I picked up Pilotwings. The 3d takes me a few seconds before it looks right, but when it does, it's awesome. I like landing on all the little boats around the islands (only done some free flight mode so far). Flying out to the island with the golf courses and landing with the rocket pack really makes me wish they had included some Wii Sports golf or something. It's so pretty.
Is there a way to take screenshots and save them to the SD card?
Also, I love the Resident Evil 15th Anniversary trailer simply for the fact that it has D.C. Douglas, aka Wesker, doing the voiceover.
One thing that makes me kind of skeptical about all of that is the fact that its so poorly written. I mean, I don't expect much from gaming journalism (especially when venturing over to IGN), but that was just really bad. Of course if that was written by someone from whom English is their second language then that could obviously be forgiven. Regardless a quick edit would have made it a lot more readable and potentially people could take it a bit more seriously.
That Resident Evil trailer though . . . fuck yes! Three games coming to the 3DS and all of them look very cool and bring something different. And to boot, none of them are even remakes! Its like Capcom found the two crests, encrusted jewel, and hidden key to open the door to my heart. Wesker can do the voiceover for anything he wants too as far as I'm concerned. Really like the voice they have given him since Umbrella Chronicles. He sounds like a badass but there is just enough chessiness in the delivery so that you don't take it too seriously. And actually, I still really need to get around to picking up Darkside Chronciles. I'll probably buy that before getting into all the portable Resident Evil goodness and should be able to be blissfully killing zombies and not zombies for quite some time. Should be a good 15 year annivesary for sure.

Oh man, Loving Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars so much, but after 2 hours my arm is getting sore from holding the 3ds at the correct angle. At least it's not eye issues like some people are having though so I can't complain.

What's the third RE game for 3DS?
Operation Racoon City. Or at least it looks that way from the trailer.
The PS3, 360, and 3DS logos are all present at the end.
I like the rocket belt too. It sort of reminds me of a helicopter, in that I'm trying to balance moving forward quickly with keeping altitude. The only thing I want (and this applies doubly to the plane) is for analogue speed controls. No strong jets/weak jets, no boost/brake, but some way of controlling my speed more carefully.

I would like to pick up a 3DS in the near future. Love the Zelda series in general, but Ocarina of Time is probably my least favorite game in the series. I won't be picking up the 3DS version unless it has some major gameplay improvements.
Star Fox 3D on the other hand will be very difficult to resist.
I was rather surprised to see a lot of 3DS boxes at both Best Buy & Walmart when we went shopping today. Doesn't look like it'll be hard at all to pick up a system whenever I feel like it. Hopefully this isn't a sign of the system underperforming in sales.
I can see why people would buy it, but i'm OOT'd out from playing it once, and with the rate great games come out I have trouble fitting in all the completely new ones I want to play in. so remakes just don't make the cut.
I'm a huge fan of OoT, but I'm not hugely excited by the re-release. I can play it any time on the Wii, I'm not a graphics snob, it's not the sort of game that's inherently replayable, and it's not particularly well suited to short burst play. Probably won't buy it.
Starfox, however, is a different matter. It'll gain more from 3D, too.
I feel the same way, and I can't wait to see how cool Starfox is to play in 3D...

Nothing bad about wanting Starfox 64 in 3D of course, but not being excited about Ocarina of Fucking Time? In 3D? With a generous visual improvement and touch sceen interface for menus and swapping items? This I do not comprend good sirs!

From my experience, I think sales figures will be awesome for the 3DS, it's just that retailers seem to have sufficient stock so that awkward limbo period of having no stock wil be much shorter.

I'm with you on this... I could not be more excited to have one of my favorite games of all time in my pocket for the first time. I think just the idea of being transported into the nostalgic world of Hyrule again is enough to guarantee I will play through it multiple times.
Poe hunting, I loved that part of the game. And fishing! I never caught the Hylian loach, I need to remedy that.

I never caught the Hylian Loach from the fishing pond in Twilight Princess, or at least from the rental canoe so that it would count toward the fish tank, but I have been able to embrass the owner of the fishing pond in Ocarina of Time on a few occassions through all of the playthroughs I've done. Its all about the sinking lure and a good deal of persistence.
I still have one skulltula and I think one heart piece unaccounted for though, so I must resolve these issues.
And yes it seems silly to quote you when your post is directly above but I had a spelling issue which I needed to correct!

Also it's the middle of spring. And all sales reports thus far have pegged the 3DS as Nintendo's best handheld launch yet.

Eh, IMO the first good 3D Zelda was Twilight Princess. Going from Link to the Past to Ocarina of Time felt like a step backwards - fun fast combat replaced with boring lock-on combat, beautiful colorful graphics replaced with drabness, interesting overworld replaced with an empty field to ride a horse around. Can't speak on Majora's Mask since I haven't played it (I hear it's good, but the similarities to OoT and low count of dungeons have scared me off so far). Wind Waker was a step in the right direction, but too much filler. Twilight Princess finally felt like the game that Ocarina of Time should have been.
If Nintendo did a total remake of the game, gameplay included, then I'd be interested, but Nintendo's fairly conservative with remakes and the game has a big enough following that people would cry foul if they didn't stick to the script. Chances are the game will just have 3D, new graphics, and touch controls and that's about it. If we're lucky, they might throw in a bonus new dungeon.
So no, I'm not particularly interested in a remake of OoT because I already played an awesome remake of OoT almost five years ago. It was called Twilight Princess.

I also think it's a case of 'people that wanted it pre-ordered it and bought it day 1', since we had tons of pre-orders in the lead-up to launch (about half our stock of each colour), so I imagine Nintendo gave allocations to account for this plus additional units for other customers. And even then we've sold through most of our stock.

RainbowDespair: I'm not sure why a low dungeon count would scare you off. At worst, it means the game is shorter. And in Majora's Mask, most of what you might consider filler is optional, though it depends on where your threshold between "pre-dungeon gameplay" and "filler" is.
Combat isn't much different, but it's a bit more diverse and challenging. Bosses are less like OoT and a bit more like TP, though they're not nearly as well-produced (visually, cinematically, etc) as TP.
It's a lot more colorful and has much better visual design than OoT, too. It seems to me like it addresses most of your complaints to some degree, so you should try it. Or you could wait for the eventual 3DS remake-- if they put effort into retaining the original art style it'll look incredible.
As I recall, someone posted the original DS, PSP, and PS2 sales data from 2004 and on in the previous thread. It showed the DS having strong starting sales, but then petering off below the PS2. It took a couple of months before becoming the juggernaught that it was -- some might even argue that it wasn't until the Lite came out that the DS really took off. The software had to catch up with the hardware. We are... what? Not even a month into the sales of the 3DS? And the NPDs still need to hit. I say give it time and everything will be fine.
Often I feel like peoples' views are that if something isn't an instant success, it simply can't be considered one. Kinect is just entering it's 6-month phase, had a great start, but people see it as throw-away. The move, like the DS, hasn't been tested yet in regards to what it can do. The industry here in North America sees the PSP as a colossal failure even though it continues to consistently be a top seller in Japan. Not everything will be like the Wii and sell oodles, yet even now onlookers see the steadying sales of the console to be a "failure". The PS3 is just now hitting its stride with more games than you can shake a fist at, and this is about 5 years into the console's life. Everything needs to grow a little. Maybe it's "Instant Now" culture which has been born out of things like downloable content and access 24/7 to any kind of gaming entertainment you want that has fostered such feelings.
If we're talking Zelda, you can't go wrong with Majora's Mask if you've never played it. Those games will teach you that there IS in fact a label known as Timeless. People still play 2-D 16-bit games for this very feeling. And heck, if you've played Wind Waker -AND- Twilight Princess, you'll be even more prepared to play MM.

"Did ya hear the one about the mussel that wanted to purchase Valve? Seems like the bivalve had a juicy offer on the table but the company flat-out refused and decided to immediately clam up!"
To be honest, I've been meaning to download Majora's Mask on the VC for a while now, just haven't gotten around to it. The low dungeon count has me worried about filler (since Wind Waker also had a low dungeon count), but if the world map is more interesting than it's all good.
Actually, the main reason I haven't gotten it yet is that XBox Live and the PSN always seem to have something cool to spend money so WiiWare and VC get kind of neglected. I really should fix this sometime - $20 to pick up Kirby Super Star and Majora's Mask would be a good idea.
And now it happened again.:? This time I started the 3D calibration instead of restarting the system, but if this keeps happening, there's something wrong.

Where/how do you do the 3D calibration?
It's somewhere in system settings, I forget where exactly.
I finally found everything in Free Flight Mode and got 3 stars on every mission. So I picked up Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. It's pretty fun. It'll be more fun to play that in school.
You know, a funny thing about the Activity Log -- it shows the active time you have the software loaded and playing. But Pilotwings also has a flight card, that times exactly how long you've spent. My total Activity Log playtime is 2:56, but the actual time I've spent playing (i.e., not in menus, not reading directions) is only 1:16:05 for Mission Flight Mode and 15 minutes in Free Flight. I agree that the 3 hour statement is way overstated, but then trying to puff up your time with a 23 hour note is just overstating things in the other direction.
As of now, I'm of two minds about Pilotwings. I've three-starred everything up to Silver, I have about four missions left to 3-star in Gold, and I haven't touched Platinum yet. I don't know if I'm really masochistic enough to try to red-star everything; the rocket-belt missions are aggravating me enough as-is due to how finicky the controls are. I realize that wrangling the controls is the entire point of the game (something that can also be said about Steel Diver, though I haven't played the full game of that). It's just that, for a game that's on the one hand supposed to be soothing and relaxing, trying to wring more enjoyment out of it by obsessively trying to perfect everything single aspect of every single mission seems to completely destroy that mood.
So far the hang gliding missions are my favorite, and control like a dream (I love the 3DS analog nub and how it lets you give nice, precise small motions), but the rocket belt missions just aren't my thing, and that's literally 1/3 of the entire mission mode. And the whole free flight mode just does nothing for me.
And in case you don't believe in high scores alone, consider the 5 hours of game time that you'll need to find every last balloon, information panel, golden hoop and stunt ring in Free Flight mode. I agree, that sounds incredibly dull, but the excitement of a treasure hunt and the challenge of doing all that without resorting to an FAQ (which would have spoiled it completely) kept me absolutely hooked.
I don't know about you, but back in my day, we called this a "collect-athon." It's also arbitrarily lengthened since you have to restart every few minutes. If reviewers ever tried to bolster the gameplay time of Modern Warfare or Assassin's Creed by tacking on the time you needed to collect all of the bafmodads, I think they'd be rightfully chided.
Sorry if I seem down on it; it's just that every time I sit down to play Pilotwings, I feel differently about it. So when I saw the initial wave of reviews and downer impressions, and then I saw the fan backlash and forum impressions about how awesome it is, I can see elements of both.
I've run up 40 hours of game time in Shadow Wars (including all failed/aborted missions), and I haven't even beaten the campaign (up to Chapter 7 on Elite) or played any skirmishes yet. This is partly due to me not using the mid-mission save feature. I'm trying not to cheese my way through this game, like I sometimes did in Fire Emblem for the Wii.
For me, the least useful squad member is the leader, Duke. I always try to use Banshee (cloak/knife) and Mint (engineer), and the healer's stim pack is so great that I've never tried her power-boost thing.
It's because of GR:SW that I've barely touched SSF4.
Two of my coworkers got 3DSes, so I should be able to make good progress in Find Mii. I also was able to pick up some randoms on a trip to a Gamestop. I have two hats so far, and am still on the first (Pikmin) puzzle.

Majora's Mask is definently one to pick up in my opinion. It does get repetitive though but the overall story is great.

All of my money for Majora's Mask 3DS.
Went out to the mall today, went into the gamestop even and made a few passes by it while I was doing things there and I got a grand total of 0 spotpasses. It's going to be a dead Mii Plaza for me.

Is there any way to disable the system asking me if I want to put the system in Sleep Mode every time I want to shut it down?
This annoys me too, and it seems to be taking longer and longer to not only bring up that menu, but also to actually shut off the system when I do reach said menu.

It wouldn't be a Nintendo platform without at least one or two completely useless features.

Not a way to avoid it, but if you just keep holding the power button down, it shuts down automatically.
Doesn't stop the wait, but you don't have to select the option.

Let's not confuse SpotPasses with StreetPasses. SpotPasses can happen anywhere you come across a WiFi connection. I got the Capcom Street Fighter figurine SpotPass (it was a code) without going near a commercial hotspot at all.
StreetPass is the local wireless stuff, which requires you to turn on a bunch of different features to actually get it to work, since it doesn't come out-of-the-box with that stuff already activated for some inane reason.
One is up to the developer to give to you; one is up to you as an individual. Ignoring the fact that not everyone is going to have a 3DS at this point, Nintendo hasn't forgotten that this is a handheld device. It's meant to be carried around. StreetPass is supposed to be the most basic form of communicating with other owners -- you don't have do anything crazy (like ask them if they could open up their copy of Nintendogs), just pass by them. It's tied into the firmware and doesn't require anything from a person other than to be "on". SpotPass, on the other hand, is supposed to be the reward for even getting online with your 3DS at all. A game may contain no multiple functions but still could feasibly benefit from SpotPass.

So Splinter Cell 3D is crap and Rabbids 3D is alright but nothing special. But what Rabbids does prove to me is that Nintendo could seriously just port over that lush beautiful Donkey Kong Country Returns and I would be super happy.
That would indeed be awesome! If Retro does anything for the 3DS period I will be super happy.
Which reminds me, along with all of the other series anniversaries this year (The Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Resident Evil) Metroid is yet another one that will be hitting some monumental year of its own. Hopefully that results in something special for the 3DS.

Flying out to the island with the golf courses and landing with the rocket pack really makes me wish they had included some Wii Sports golf or something. It's so pretty.

Why the hell do I like the rocket belt so much.
I have a perfect score on more Rocket Belt missions than any other vehicle.

One thing that makes me kind of skeptical about all of that is the fact that its so poorly written. I still have one skulltula and I think one heart piece unaccounted for though, so I must resolve these issues.

Actually, the main reason I haven't gotten it yet is that XBox Live and the PSN always seem to have something cool to spend money so WiiWare and VC get kind of neglected. I really should fix this sometime - $20 to pick up Kirby Super Star and Majora's Mask would be a good idea.

Hey, I have a blog! (Actually being updated again!)

Well played, sir.

This annoys me too, and it seems to be taking longer and longer to not only bring up that menu, but also to actually shut off the system when I do reach said menu.
THERE'S A MID-MISSION SAVE FEATURE?!
Well, that explains why I find them so difficult!

Guess I didn't hold it down long enough, cheers.
