Much as I love the sword play in Assassin's Creed, it's time to move on or redo the system. 90% of the moves in Revelations are just recycled ones from ACII and Brotherhood with the exception of Vlad's sword. I'd love the series to jump ahead to the Napoleonic wars or Revolutionary France/America. An increased focus on firearms with a clever (not copy pasted from other games) cover system and a bayonette/saber dueling system.
That's the exact opposite of how I feel. I couldn't give a crap about the Desmond parts, and in fact I'd be happy if they just cut them entirely. I love the historical aspect of the game, and I don't want to see it become more modern. The Desmond parts are getting more and more ridiculous too. And Revelations has a ton of really lame retcons that only serve to make the story more convoluted.
I want to just stab people in historically recreated cities. Things like the animus and Abstergo only get in the way of the primary focus of the game which is shanking mans with hidden blades and big sword fights.
what what does AssRev retcon
The first Desmond sequence serves as a fantastic example.
All that crap about how his parents raised him telling him that he is an assassin and that templars are evil. He lived on a secret assassin farm that was secluded, and he spent his whole childhood cloistered with other assassins... and somehow he doesn't remember any of that when he's strapped into the animus.
His whole backstory was retconned into Revelations in such a sloppy manner.
He talks about being raised in a secluded assassin village in AC1, in the same game he explains his surprise at the templars actually existing and kidnapping him because he didn't actually believe in any of his parents' stories, and at best they were exaggerations. He still needs to train using the bleeding effect because he ran away at 16 and has been 9 years out of practice, and the Animus lets him learn years worth of training in a few days.
Hmm. I guess I need to replay AC1 because I don't remember any of that. All I remember is being extremely irritated every time they pulled me out of the crusades to progress a lame Matrix knockoff story.
And after 4 games, I still think the whole Desmond/Animus thing is a lame Matrix knockoff story. I'd rather them concentrate solely on the historical recreation, and invest all their resources in that, rather than blowing a ton of budget on Nolan North and Kristin Bell.
I don't have a problem with them moving gameplay elements along and including firearms and other things, as long as the series remains grounded in the past. A Napoleonic game would be fantastic. So would an American Revolution game. So would feudal Japan. So would a Victorian London game.
But as soon as they move into the realm of modern or near-future, they lose the core element that makes this series so great - the historical stuff. Without that its just Splinter Cell with Desmond instead of Sam Fisher.
Edit: I'd also like to see them focus a game on a female protagonist, and as long as the framework is tied to Desmond, that's a bit awkward. If they ditched Desmond, they would be free to do so much more with the principle characters. But as long as Desmond has to "sync up" with his ancestors, they will never be able to have a black protagonist, or asian, or anything other than European/Mediterranean.

Ooh, what if they did a Max Payne style Creed game? Imagine it: hidden guns popping out of your sleeves, using Eagle vision to dodge the bullets, getting in and out of huge gunfights quick. Think Vanquished meets Max Payne meets ACII.

That would be perfect. Honestly, most game developers are incredibly lazy with implementing an interesting bullet damage system. Rather than having a health bar in which a protagonist through protagonist-power shrugs off a dozen handgun rounds and a shogun to the chest, why not a 'dodge' meter that depletes as you are shot at. Have the combat animation synched so every 'hit' is dodged at the last instant with a subtle movement Remo Williams style. When the gague runs out, next hit, you're dead.
So I've been playing Red Dead Redemption this weekend (wrapped up the online trophies for the platinum, 4x XP weekend is awesome) and wow, playing Revelations made me forget how good basic online features are. Someone's being a dick? Kick them from the game. Want to play with my friends? Oh, look at that, we're not split up at the end of a single game and there are no connection issues whatsoever.

People complain nothing gets advanced in Brotherhood, Revelations makes it looks like Empire Strikes Back. EVERY GODDAMN THING explained to Desmond in the vault was, literally, explained to him at the end of ACII. We saw a quicktime of the first people being destroyed and... ? What? Is that supposed to be impressive? In Ezio's story, the villains were weak as hell, and were never half of a credible threat. Not to mention the awful Desmond segments unlock... nothing. No badass secret revelations, just boring voice overs. I liked the Altair levels, but talk about recycling the same damn map, FIVE TIMES! It's really absurd.
Sigh, I hope to hell the next game in the series is better than this one. Want to know what gets advanced folks?
Desmond wakes up.
That's fucking it. Most phoned in game in the series bar none. I can't remember the last time a game disappointed me so bad.

Basically, Revelations is what a lot of people thought Brotherhood was going to be before that one came out.
I would totally recommend this game to anyone, if it weren't for the existence of Brotherhood and AC2, which are better. Revelations is still a good game.

Yeah, I still enjoyed it, but as I said earlier, the next game has to have the same quality jump from 2 to 3 as what we had from 1 to 2.
I'm not even done with Revelations and I don't really want to pay Ubi for AC3. I'm feeling very, very burned on this; I want some fucking resolution to the main plotline already. Stabbing bitches in Constantinople is cool and all, but I really can't bring myself to give a shit about politics and keys when the juicy shit is constantly presented as 5min cliffhangers at the end of each game.
Also, I really miss the Truth segments, but I was one of those guys over-analyzing everything in them, finding and breaking codes, etc.
At this point, I'm playing through it mechanically, it's meh, I'll finish it then move on to Skyward Sword and not even touch the multi.
but holy shit the title was a huge misnomer and I don't know why Ubisoft tried to mislead us like that, if they marketed this game primarily as an exploration of the characters that closes the book on two of them I would be fine
the curve for Ezio's trilogy does indeed move like the one for the Star Wars trilogy
Personally I love the Abstergo/Desmond storyline, and loved the Desmond sequences in this game. Heck, I even love the templar storyline they added in the multiplayer.
EDIT: Unfortunately, Assassin's Creed: Clarifications probably wouldn't have sold as well.
I'm in sequence 4 or 5 right now, and spent the majority of my last play session running in a loop between the bank, pigeon coop, new recruit spawn, and a herald for bribing. I'd enjoy the occasional den/mediterranean defense as a change of pace from executing templars to ordering templar executions. It just feels like the pendulum has swung too far towards the mini-games. I want to see Ezio out there being a badass, not reading reports of badassery from distant lands.
Even knowing that, I can't help but stop by the next available pigeon coop anytime a mission is completed. They've apparently tapped into some unknown, undesirable, and yet undeniable part of my brain.
Yeah I don't know why the Desmond sequences get such a bad rap, they were fun and gave needed insight to his character. I think there was just a constant expectation in this game of major revelations, like they kept promising in the previews, which prevented the actual story from being fully appreciated.
the desmond sections were just kinda... slow. i didn't even finish them all yet because even though you learn more about desmond i found them sorta boring. i would rather have played something closer to mirror's edge if they were gonna go all first person on us.
but i loved the meat of AssRev, i played it just as much if not more than AC2 and AssBro. the story was less grand in scope but the fact that it centered on ezio let me forgive that. the altair sections were cool, but i felt they could have been longer/ more diverse. the den defense game is fun, but i did find it tedious how often they got recaptured.
loved the hook blade, it was more fun than i thought. that said i hope the consolidate some of the weapons for the next game... having that many projectiles seems excessive. in fact if the next game isn't AC3 and it isn't modern day assassin's, i'll be pretty disappointed. ezio is awesome and i'm glad they gave him a good send off, but man i am itching to play this style of game in a modern city...
but yes, a dodge meter or something similar - like temporary, regenerating health damage but instead of actually getting hit by sword, you're just getting staggered by a poor block or letting the blow strike your armour, and when you're out of "health" it's just that you're off-balance enough that the next blow penetrates your defenses and kills you - would improve games like these
AC is already sort of like that for the enemies, at least - their health bar diminishes as they block, and the final blow kills them
Personally, cutscenes would have worked better for me during the Desmond sequences. The sequences were interesting and all, but seeing as how it was intended to be focused around Desmond, I would have preferred them instead of Oh hey here's some blocks now go move around the map while you listen to him talk about his life.
The storyline, I found, was okay. It wasn't bad, but it paled in comparison to the others. Only a few characters really stuck to me, and the whole plot could have been better. The best I can summarize the story, up until the end, is
treasure hunting
The multiplayer is great, I enjoyed it more than I did in Brotherhood. Aside from bugs and a few other issues, I've had a blast playing gamemodes like Wanted, Manhunt, and Artifact Assault. The new mechanics, albiet small, make it that much more interesting. As it stands now, though, I can't see it lasting very long without being able to play with friends. There's been a big difference playing with and without friends for me, so much that it pretty much kills the fun playing solo. Not entirely, but enough where it makes it feel less enjoyable.
With all that said, I'm hoping that they make ACIII as mindblowing as the second one was. I have a feeling that it will be, with how they set up the end of Revelations (and Embers), but I can't help but have a little doubt.
Amazon saying the PC release is release till 10 am tomorrow.
FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUI'll just play more batman.
That's upsetting.
I have a job interview and then an event tomorrow night.
Which means I won't get to play it until Wednesday.
I mean, I'm happy about the job interview. But still.
edit: Actually, it's probably better (for me) this way. If it was a 12AM or even 3AM release I might be tempted to stay up or get up earlier to play it which wouldn't be smart.

Guys I picked my PC copy at Target tonight. Their register wasn't trying to block the sale, either. Check around Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart... just call em up. I'm playing now and it's glorious.

Just finished it and, yeah, bah.
Also, these credits go on for ages. "Worldwide Licensing Senior Manager". They're just making shit up now.

Desmond wakes up.

The worst part about the story is
Desmond waking up with all this information about where they need to go and the team are all "yeah uh, we're already there dude".
As far as the Desmond sequences go, the gameplay was awful. Slow, floaty and boring. I don't understand why they couldn't have just copied the Subject 16 sequence in AssBro. Without the numerous bugs anyway.
Speaking of Subject 16 though, I only just realised he's voiced by Cam Clarke. Liquid lives on, in the Animus!
the team really is massive, that's how they can make these games in a year
It's not really a single team, they farm chunks out to various Ubisoft studios (eg, Massive made the Desmond sequences). This is why the crypts in previous AC's felt so isolated from the main game.

BTW, regarding Subject 16.
I never finished the Truth in Brotherhood, but... has his connection with Desmond and Altair/Ezio been elaborated upon? I mean, Altair's son looks just like him, so he has to be a descendant of Altair, like Desmond.

He is known to be a descendant of Ezio, Darim does look a lot like him but that's not proof of relation
the desmond skin you get was super lazily made. why couldn't they give him a stinking hookblade? he looks dumb using ziplines and magically pulling himself up huge gaps
Basically, Revelations is what a lot of people thought Brotherhood was going to be before that one came out.
I came in here to post a huge thing about how dissapointed I am in Revelations, but this says it all.
Nothing will ever come close to Fable 3 as "biggest letdown ever", but damn this is on the list and that makes me sad.
It's buggy as hell (I cant count the number of people walking into walls I see, locations that get bugged, saved citizens it wont let me speak to, ect) and just weird. The game is weird. Things make no sense and there's like 3 plots going on at once, and I care so very little about the "main" one.
It's a shame, but the thing I'm most excited about is finishing this, then going back to 1250/1250 Brotherhood because I finally got DaVinci DLC. I still LOVE this franchise, and this story, but Revelations was the first AC I bought at launch because I felt Ubi deserved my full purchase because of how much Ive loved 1, 2 and Brotherhood.
AC3 will wait for $25 again.
