Today's Direct2Drive April deal should be Dirt 2 for 75% off, and Bioshock 2 is actually 75% off Thursday.
So, if timed correctly, Bioshock 2 will be 75% off on Steam on the same day. I wonder how that'll go down for D2D.
Probably not well.
I mean I think D2D is okay and all, but with Steam I open it and get a nice list of all my games, with D2D......I get lousy download links. I own several D2D games and I never play them, mostly because installing them is a hassle compared to Steam.
Hah. I love Steam as much as the next guy, but honestly, how is manually installing a game to a "Games" folder a "hassle"? Literally the only difference is having to browse and select a folder. Both require you to install a program in order to download your game. Both have good download speeds (1.1Mb/s with D2D). Both have easily accessible stores. Both are kindergarden-ly simple. The only difference is the manual install on D2D's part which had to be done for literally every game you installed before Steam. Easy as pie.
I personally use shortcuts for all my installed games (Steam, D2D, GoG, etc) either on my quick bar or in a folder on my Desktop marked "Games". There's literally no difference between where I buy them except in post purchase patch support.
With that said, the post purchase patching on Steam's part is always enough for me to buy from Steam first in cases where the prices are the same. But the notion of "having to select your installation folder" as a hassle is just a bit extreme.
Edit: The more I read that, the more it comes off as an attack. It really wasn't meant to. I'm just saying any non-Steamworks game is going to require a manual install. And it's really not that hard. We all have horror stories about distributors though. D2D just hasn't fucked me over yet. Hah.
Srsly, I have several hundred games, anything that's not on Steam gets forgotten pretty quick.
Having to go on a site, remember the password just to check WHAT games I have there is kinda too much hassle. Steam just lists everything, and it takes 2 clicks to download. And it's easier to manage downloads there, i can stop and restart. D2D and others usually have SLOW downloads, or cannot be restarted...
I only get games on other services if it's GOG or if I can register them on steam.
Hah, no worries. Like I said, I launch games from either a quick bar (aka "Favorites") or through shortcuts in a Games folder. I've never really used the Steam Library window, so it's never really been a hassle/issue for me. Also, the number of game don't really matter if they're all installed in the same folder. As far as keeping up with them, there really only 3 places mine could be, so again, it's not hard to track them down if I need to redownload them. But yes, to your point, 3 is alligator to 1.
Also, going to a site and remembering a password is no different that logging into Steam.
But whatever, this is a silly topic. I'm not trying to win D2D extra business, so by all means, continue to use Steam. Hah.

My computer auto-logs into Steam. I barely remember my password for Steam haha. But I should probably start adding my non Steam games to the library.
And yeah, when the Steam Guard came into play I had to think pretty damn hard about what my password was. Fun fact, it's been the same since 2004. YIKES!

They're not free, and in regards to the minimum price, you could pay as little as $0.01 if you wanted to. The previous Humble Indie Pack was available for several weeks, if I remember correctly.
Ahh, cool.
I'd like to pay $10 at least. I'll probably grab it next week sometime.
I think that the Humble Bundle guys take straight up donations too. So if you want to lock the pack down for a minimum price then donate more later, you can do that.
I wouldn't want all my games moved to Steam. In fact, very few of my games are on my Steam account (about six), with the rest in their own folder on my pc. I like being able to have multiple installs of say, Medieval 2 - Total War, so I can try out different mods and total conversions. And when I open a game, I don't want to have to log in to a service first.
Oh, and can someone tell me why Valve needs to know what is installed on my pc? I was playing around with Steam the other night and found that it lists all my installed programs. I really can't think of a reason for Valve to want this information.

For the survey. It doesn't actually send anything to Valve without asking you for permission first. Users are asked to submit their info for the hardware survey at random times.

Presumably the same reason they want to know your hardware: To know what they need to target. If everyone has iTunes, it might be a good reason to shove media controls into the Steam overlay that interface with iTunes.
Well, that's a reason they could want it, I can't say if that is the reason.
I don't have this game yet... should I? Are people still playing it?
There's a demo, which I'd recommend trying before buying. It looked fun to me but I really didn't like the control scheme on either a controller or KBAM.
I can't speak to your second question, but I just know that I always hear that it's much more fun with others.

I played the game on a controller first, because I like leaning back in my chair and not hunching over a keyboard. It wasn't great. I played about six chapters but I couldn't put in the spell elements fast enough to cast a lot of the cool stuff, and tried to move to the keyboard mid-game. that was pretty much a disaster.
I'd say play with the keyboard from the beginning, get used to how it controls, and it will do fine for you. After I went back and actually did the tutorial with the keyboard controls it got miles better.

Far as I know those mobs are still in the game, but I think that wouldn't be impossible to get out of, if you even get in that situation in the first place.
I wonder why the Humble Bundle is saying all games work great on Mac. Trine I can get through Steam on Mac, but both Shadowgrounds games are saying they are windows only?
Ah well, I'm snagging this anyways, even if it's Trine only.

there's a drm-free version of the mac shadowgrounds. The mac versions aren't on steam (yet) is all

Sigh. Ok, man. I'm not trying to convince anyone to give up Steam. Just saying some people over react to anything not in Steam like its a maze of death to get it working.
Either way BIOSHOCK 1 AND 2 BABY! Thank you Steam.
To be fair, by "some people" you mean those of us who hang out in the Steam thread, yeah? I mean, it's a little predictable that we're all Steam all the time, in here.
$4.99 for Bioshock2 will tickle my buying finger along with the Magicka complete pack. Gotta decide on Portal 2 or Brink for my preoder monies. Leaning twoards Brink.
Edit The new Portal 2 video just swung it back to it. Good job boots.

Hah. Now don't go all "you people?" on me. Ya'll are smart enough to know how to install and manage your games without Steam. I know this!
Edit: If not, I can go all Home Depot and hold a class via Skype or something. Haha. That would be the worst class ever. "Let's Play: Game Management and Ways to trick people into seeing Goatse"
Hmm, just got Bioshock for 360 from the library. Guess I'll grab 2 for when I'm finished.
You can get games at the library now...?
Not sure how to feel about that.
Edit: and just like that, I have made up my mind. Its no big deal, there's no difference between a kid sitting around playing a game like BioShock and a kid sitting around reading a good book.

I have 380 games on Steam and probably 50 more off of Steam. I very nearly bought Chronicles of Riddick recently because I completely forgot I already bought it from D2D.
Also it looks like I'll be picking up Magicka today, was waiting on a sale just like this.
i am worried if i pick up up magicka it will be just like when i picked up BC2, in that by the time the price has dropped people have stopped playing it

Depends on the library. We do not offer such a service in my library system, and I cannot see it happening anytime soon. We do offer a select number of strategy guides, though! As well as a gaming night for teens. And I'm looking into running a monthly Wii sports/whatever thing for adults sometime in the future.
Er, but anyway, Steam related stuff! I guess I am automatically entered into today's 2k Games contest since I already have both Bioshocks. I'm interested in Magicka, but since it involves lots of keystrokes to cast spells, it's probably not for me.

If memory serves correct, if you own a game that's in a bundle you buy, you can gift the game in the bundle to a friend.
So....

Yes you should. It's awesome.
People are still playing it. I don't play it all the time, but I'm always down for a game. I imagine it's the same with a lot of people.
Since Magicka: Vietnam drops today, I'd say it's going to see a pretty big spike in people actually playing it again.
Plus it's super fun. I've put 24 hours into it and I never even fired up the multi.
