[RIFT] 1.3 Coming soon - Server Transfers, Guild Banks, and World Events! Oh My!
I think RIFT has ruined my view of healing on other MMOs. It makes no sense to me to play a character that ONLY heals people, and that those heals dont do damage to the enemy at all. That just sounds boring to me. I mean, I can understand the obvious benefit, and I guess some people just like being useful. But just sitting in the back and keeping green meters full sounds dull.
I liked the Gobbo Shaman style in WAR: charge up a meter by doing damage, which buffs your healing. Then your healing charges up a meter that buffs your damage! Rinse and repeat.

This I like.
The trick is to develop a sense of ownership over your comrades. They're not people so much as they're your adoring pets who rely on you to care and feed for them, and in turn they go out and acquire riches in your name.
And if they piss you off, you make them suffer. Hell, they can always be replaced. You're a big guddamn healer, what are they?
This is... humorous, but doesnt interest me in healing. Just annoys me. And I think its just in the way that games are setup nowadays. The "holy trinity", that is. One guy tanks, one or two guys heal, and the rest are DPS. That's all well and good, and its worked fine 'til now, but I'd prefer a change in this dynamic. Maybe make heals less necessary and more emergency reactions.
I didn't play it for long, but there's a Shin Megami Tensei MMO that was very much on my radar when it first came out, simply because I loved the style and previous SMT games. I played a bit and enjoyed what I played, and I think a big part of that was the structure of combat. You'd attack, and when the enemy attacked you you'd need to be ready with some kind of damage mitigation, i.e. a block or dodge. Simply standing there and taking the hits would have you killed in seconds. But this way, it kept you involved in managing your own health. If you died, it was your own fault for not getting out of the way or stopping the damage when you should have. It wasn't necessarily because some developer decided to make the 1 a 9 on the creature's damage table and your healer couldn't cover everyone.
I will say that its been about a year or two since I played though, so I may be looking at that through rose-colored glasses.
Healing is frustrating and infuriating, and it's all I like doing in MMOs anymore.
Good luck KoA; you are a lovely bunch of chaps, and I hope your enjoyment of Telara lasts longer than mine.
I liked you as a healer, felt like you were competent and capable.
What happened?

So, I decided to go for one of the daily pit brawls before the servers went down. I only need Shotgun Suzy to finish the set. Who the fuck spawns? SHOTGUN GOD DAMN SUZY!
So some people take dying to a boss way to serious and have to call everyone trash and worthless and failures and such, didnt really expect to see that coming from a Penny Arcade poster but wow
So everyone's been talking about this epic questline that supposedly starts with Asha that I can't seem to find. Asha has no quests for me (in Meridian). Any help? I'd like to do it, but damned if I can figure out how to start it, or where I might have left it off.

Wait. That wasn't me, was it? I was sober last night, so I swear I'd remember something like this.

That's a joke right? (The quest line, I mean, not your comment.) Requiring two invasion event bosses in the low level zone has got to be the most ridiculous idea ever. I've actually had that quest sitting idle on three separate characters that have all completely outleveled Silverwood. So I guess I need to spend some (low) quality time sitting around doing nothing, waiting for those two events to start. Yeah, that sounds fun....
Muahah. Had some idiot tell me I couldn't tank Fae at level 15. Proved that bastard wrong and he's still LFG even after my group finished. The same group he abandoned when he saw my level.

I basically just check the map anytime I'm in Sanctum to see what's going on in Silverwood, lots of rifts mean some type of invasion is going on and worth a check, I got Cinderon that way, now just waiting to track down Gnarldon. There's also running around the zone finishing artifacts that you could do.
I need some help setting up my champ at level 40. I've been running around as a pally/reaver/beast, which I think is good for tanking, but not ideal for leveling speed or killing guardians. I got jumped by a guardian a few levels above me, and I was actually winning the exchange, since my tank set up made me hard to kill (even though I didn't have my pally 10m heal up since I'd just finished soloing an elite). However, it was really, really slow, and I was actually thinking of stopping my attack just to get the encounter over with. Another guardian my level jumped in and they finally finished me off. I didn't persue revenge since I don't have a good hulk smash build set up. I did see the lower level guy a bit later when he rezzed at a guardian (whatever the thing is you rez at, not really a graveyard), so I was able to kill him. It would be nice to have a setup where surprise is actually helpful. On my pally, I'm not going to kill you fast, but I don't really care if you see me first.
I just hit 40, and I was sitting in Meridian last night trying to set up a 2h champ build. I realized before I logged that I'd been staring at the screen for 45 minutes so I come to you all for help. I ended up doing this incomplete build of champ/paragon/beast:
I figured beast at 0 points. I didn't think I would like a pet, but I added it to my pally a few days ago and I dig it. I don't really want to manage the cat though, so I figure 0 points is good. I'm not as sure about paragon as the secondary soul. I tried a bunch of variations, but at 40g a respec I didn't actually test them out. Right now the role looks like the link above. If I've fucked up the champ part I don't mind paying for another respec. Any ideas?

your going to want to than make 2 macros, one will have all your reactives, than the follow up attacks, than point builders. and the other will be deathblow, strike like iron, shifting blades, titan's strike, bladefury. most of champ/para damage doesnt come from finishers but rather from the huge number of non-gcd abilities you have letting you dump 3-4k dmg in a few seconds.
As I level do I want to avoid abilities like cruel efficency, since I actually want to be parried or dodged for reactives? Or is parry/dodge factored after hit? I think it works like scenario B, but I could be wrong.
Scenario A
Hit roll lowest, you miss
Hit roll low, opponent dodges
Hit roll low, opponent parries
Scenario B
Hit roll low, you miss, the end.
Hit roll high, opponent rolls for dodge
Hit roll high, opponent rolls for parry
I don't see anything that is triggered by missing; just parry, block, dodge and crit.
you can get cruel efficiency if you want to go higher in the champ tree, there's a lot of +hit gear you wil be getting once your 50 so it doesnt matter as much, and there's just better talents at your level to spend those points in. 38 champ is usualy about where you will stop, so 2 more in take no prisoners, than 3 in perfect timing is the usual build. than the rest of your points can be spent in para in serenity, and either 4 duality of mind + 3 force of will, or 5 duality and 2 improved flowing strikes. I personally like force of will better.

I'm not sure if you can runebreak the epic great essences as they come from planar vendors.
The rare quality ones sure. I don't find myself lacking in rare shards though, usually just kinetics
We now have nearly 8 max level characters in the EU guild! Clearly we are good at this game. Should we try and organise some guild instances, or will we not manage to get 5 out of the 7/8 of us online at once.
Inq/Cab/Just, so I have the no-threat mien, a bunch of AOE and Mana-clawback tools, and working dps plus Reparation and Salvation. Is the dps from a full-point Inquisitor worth it to lose the toys? I like having the toys.

(and then another one with Bladefury, or you can throw Bladefury into that same macro, after titan's strike)
A lot of people like to use Deathblow for leveling. I much prefer running around with Strike Like Iron up at all times. You'll finish most fights with 2/3 AP, and when you charge your next target, you'll get a 3rd AP, so cast SLI right after you charge, and then proceed to rape/pillage.
EDIT: I also included the Champion Snare/Stun Break, which comes in handy often in PvE leveling. Ie: sneaky npc rogue stuns. >_<
EDIT: Foomy, Titan's Strength is a total waste of points, and no Bloodthirst is fail. Also, Shifting Blades is barely worth using for soloing, unless SLI is up and you have 3 points and are out of combat. In combat, better to use DB/TS/BF or Fiery Burst, if you have it.

Yeah, Cruel Efficiency is not needed for leveling, and hit gear is easy to obtain as soon as you hit level 50. My first hour at 50 I had 97 hit (you need 50 for T1s, and 100 for T2s).
EDIT THE 14th! -
AtomBomb, last night I discovered the wonders of Blade of Elemental Affinity, a RB skill that heals you for 35% of damage done on ALL ABILITY CRITS. I made a build with this for farming, and so far, I find it quite awesome. I wish I would have used it for levelling from levels 44 to 50. Here's a fun RB build for level 44. http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0ckLu..AMstdcrrtdz.icL
You can probably drop Paragon for Champion, or whatever. The Crits healing you is... fucking wonderful.
Thanks dudes. I may actually play the "kill mans/do quests" game tonight, rather than the "left-click skills, never mind right-click, save, that's not right, respec, left-click, alt-tab, read official forums, rage, logout" game.
EDIT- That looks promising. I'll have to try it when I hit 44. I spec'ed out of BoP and TtB on my pally and I'm finding that it slowed me down a lot. I didn't think those little heals added up but they do. At 35% I'd be a perpetual leveling machine.
As I level do I want to avoid abilities like cruel efficency, since I actually want to be parried or dodged for reactives? Or is parry/dodge factored after hit? I think it works like scenario B, but I could be wrong.
Combat log parsing shows me hitting about 97% of the time without ANY Cruel Efficiency. I question the value of that ability.

I really like Don't Make Me Angry as well (if you have two points to spare). It's up and running about 80% of the time and it's like free DPS. I'm not sure why more people don't use it, but maybe I'm missing some important plot hint.
Edit: I play almost exclusively in Warfronts and PvP and have only gone into instances maybe three times total.
Cruel Efficiency is for dungeons, where you actually need hit% against bosses or expert dungeon mobs. Same with Don't Make Me Angry, where you shouldn't be getting hit in dungeons.

Attack power is complete shit right now. I ran xIT with a Champ (Oneshot) who is far better geared than I and pretty easily out-DPSed him in 90% of the fights, mainly because he has a good amount of AP, and like 350 crit. Where I have 350 AP and ~550 crit. Once Attack Power actually adds more than 1 millionth of a point of damage per attack (assuming it ever does), those points (Titan's Strength and Don't Make me Angry) can be better spent elsewhere. Like, literally anywhere else. If you PvP a lot, throw those points into pally for a 100% heal on a 10m CD, or throw them into Vindicator.
I spent hours fighting Infiltrator Johlen in GSB, and Inescapable Fury did not pop up once. My hit is over 220 with a two-hander with a hit rune, so I replaced the hit rune with crit to have 209 hit and still didn't get a dodge, miss, or parry. When I was running normal dungeons, it would pop up quite often, so it's pretty good for anything but level 50.
Also, once you start doing experts, getting crit is fatal, so Don't Make Me Angry is good for anything but level 50.
Holy shit that rogue trailer is horrible. And the builds? Awful. The teleporting sniper has THREE TELEPORTS. Two of which take you into melee with the target. So effin' retarded. Also... teleporting from a ledge down to the shard in Whitefall? Not going to happen. The teleports stop at any height difference of more than a few pixels.
The death dealer build? Worthless. Embarassing in fact.

I enjoy my warrior a lot more than I did my cleric, so I think that'll be my main at 50, but that's a bit off still.
It's a bit complicated and requires you to not get greedy. One misstep and you just cut your damage in half for 1-2 global cooldowns. It's mainly due to the fact that no finisher used in this build is on the global cooldown. Rising Waterfall does so much damage, it would be madness to waste a GCD on a finisher that does less damage than a builder.
You'll run with the following buffs: Planar Blade, Avatar of Water, Focus of Body (when there's no archon, bard, or beastmaster), Way of the Mountain, and Soldier's Bearing.
If you run with a chloro or other soul that reduces the cost of abilities, you may find you have no power problems at all. If you finish several rotations and are still above 50 power, feel free to switch to Storm Blade unless you really need those Riftwalk resets.
Abbreviations for you non-warriors
AP - Attack Point
DS - Dual Strike
RW - Rising Waterfall
SLI - Strike Like Iron
FB - Fiery Burst
SB - Storm Burst (do NOT confuse this with Shifting Blades!)
EB - Earth Burst
PotW - Path of the Wind
PotR - Path of the Raptor
FS - Flame Spear
PorH - Path of the Hurricane
MB - Mighty Blow
Single target
Melee
In melee, your AP builders are DS and RW. With the buff to Weapon Master, you will usually get your 3 APs with just 1, 2. If you don't, then hit 1 again, and if SLI is not up, hit it. If SLI is active and on cooldown, hit 2 again. RW is where 60% of your damage is going to come from, so there's no point to mix in a finisher while RW is active.
So, an example scenario is opening on a boss. You hit DS and RW, but don't proc a third AP. Hit DS again. Since SLI is not active, hit SLI. Now, hit with DS and RW again to build more APs. You get a third AP proc, so hit FB. Yay. Now, you hit DS and RW again, but don't get a third AP. Hit DS again, but since SLI is active, you'll hit RW again before using another finisher. RW will do more damage than any of your finishers.
Ranged
This is pretty simple. PotW > PotR. If you proc a third attack point, hit a finisher. If you don't, hit FS > PotH, then finisher. Your follow-ups are ALWAYS better than your finishers, unless that finisher is SLI.
AoE
Melee
Spam MB until you get SLI active, then spam MB, hit PotH when it's off cooldown, and use SB or EB. Remember that PotH is better than your finishers, but it does have a 20 yard range so you can pull some crazy shit.
Ranged
Nothing really different here than single-target ranged, just use SB and EB instead of FB.
Tricks
True Weapon Master
With the changes to Weapon Master and the use of finishers off GCD, you can sometimes get 3 APs with one attack after a finisher. Weapon Master only procs AFTER YOUR ATTACK CONNECTS! This means that you can hit an attack to get that third AP and IMMEDIATELY hit a finisher while the attack animation is still playing. For example, DS hits very quickly. The animation is barely a few frames. You'll notice if you have your second attack point before the GCD is over. However, RW plays a longer animation. If you get two APs from DS, you can hit RW and FB almost simultaneously, consuming 3 APs. If Weapon Master procs from RW, you'll have one AP at the end of RWs animation. If you use DS again and proc 2 APs from it, remember that FB doesn't stack, so use a different finisher to maximize damage.
Riftwalker
With Planar Blade active and the insane amount of crit you can obtain with this build, there's almost no cooldown on Riftwalk. Use this to your advantage on fights that do a lot of stunning, snaring, and environmental obstacles.
StoneshieldLOL
People forget about this ALL THE TIME! It makes ANY attack miss, no matter what it is. Eliam's Final Strike? Yeah, just missed with that 13 million damage so you can reset him and rez everyone without wasting a soulwalk. Cyclorax's Cyclonic Destruction? Screw it, just stay in and hit Stoneshield while everyone flames you for being OP.
Way of the Mountain
I shouldn't go into this...
Gearing
This is a very crit-heavy build. RW, PotR, and PotH not only get +20% damage from Way of the Mountain and +96% damage from SLI, they also get +30% crit damage from Force of Will, plus another 6% crit after using DS or PotW. Take all the crit gear you can without losing hit, even if that means rolling on a leather piece when there are no rogues around.
Build a focus that's heavy on crit and somewhat even on STR and DEX. Although I took Elemental Caress (50% less threa) from the riftblade tree, I still sometimes pull threat, so the Crystallized Fire Elemental from the planar vendor in Shimmersand is a good idea. It procs a threat drop on damaging abilities. I also use a greater that procs 42 crit on physical attacks.
If you have the stones, there is a greater focus for 50 inscribed that increases Elemental Touch damage by 25. THIS INCREASES WITH ELEMENTAL BLADE FOR A TOTAL OF 50!!! That means every single attack you do is increased by 50. This build hits so much, that this is potentially an increase of 75 DPS.
I know that gearing is somewhat universal for all melee DPS, but I have a funny feeling that attack power is going to be changed drastically sometime in the near future...
Holy fuck, I really had nothing better to do at 4:30 in the morning!

Lou can go bard but that doesn't count. My chloro is only 41 but my tank warrior is 50 and has 69 toughness now.
I sure hope they put in server transfers at some point, that would probably get me to resub right there.

I don't, one of the things I missed about wow was how a server could have a community. When transfers opened you basically couldn't know people on your server anymore. Then lfg killed it even more to the point of your only constant being your guild.

Yeah, Release the March Wardens gives a better 2H hammer.
Bah.
I just hit 40, and I was sitting in Meridian last night trying to set up a 2h champ build. I realized before I logged that I'd been staring at the screen for 45 minutes so I come to you all for help. I ended up doing this incomplete build of champ/paragon/beast:
http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0cukm..EV0zVo0Ghzz
If you are in KoA, I know Esian is 300 Runecrafting. Send him a message/mail in game.
The rare quality ones sure. I don't find myself lacking in rare shards though, usually just kinetics

Also, re-tooled my PVE Ranged Cleric from the mismatched mess it was to this http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=00dor.eEoixt0qz.Vzmo.Vuzo
Inq/Cab/Just, so I have the no-threat mien, a bunch of AOE and Mana-clawback tools, and working dps plus Reparation and Salvation. Is the dps from a full-point Inquisitor worth it to lose the toys? I like having the toys.

0 Point beast at level 40 will do you no good, since the pet will top out at level 30, use Riftblade instead, for the Blade ability.
Macros are as follows
AP Builder
#show Path of the Wind
suppressmacrofailure
cast flinching strike
cast inescapable fury
cast bloodthirst
cast turn the blade
cast rising waterfall
cast path of the wind
AoE Finisher
#show Titan's Strike
suppressmacrofailure
cast proper timing
cast titan's strike
EDIT- That looks promising. I'll have to try it when I hit 44. I spec'ed out of BoP and TtB on my pally and I'm finding that it slowed me down a lot. I didn't think those little heals added up but they do. At 35% I'd be a perpetual leveling machine.
Also, once you start doing experts, getting crit is fatal, so Don't Make Me Angry is good for anything but level 50.
The Raid
The death dealer build? Worthless. Embarassing in fact.
Rogue trailer? What?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just stumbled across it.
Are there any other healers than me? (Also, I need to look at a good spec, right now my healy spec is mostly Warden, so I suck at bursty damage.)

The Raid
Lou can go bard but that doesn't count. My chloro is only 41 but my tank warrior is 50 and has 69 toughness now.
I want to know more PA people on Twitter.
