If I've got a PC with a wifi modem and a PS3, can I use the former as a media server for the latter, or do I need any additional hardware? If I've got all the equipment I need, how easy/difficult is it to set up the PC (Win 7) as a media server?

Will try PS3 Media Server. I'd previously tried TVersity, but while my PC showed up on the PS3's menus, I couldn't connect, getting a message saying that "Access to the media server is not allowed." Here's hoping that PS3 Media Server will solve the problem.

PS3MediaServer is nice in that it offers the easiest MKV support, if you have to deal with that file type.
TVersity is pretty good--it handles image files better than PS3MS--but you might encounter some problems if you're using too many subfolders. It's been a long time since I used media servers, so all I can think of that's causing your problem is that you haven't registered your PS3 with the actual programs.
Windows Media Player 12 also has a good streaming program, if its file support is somewhat limited, potentially. Same goes for Windows Media Center, which actually offers an entirely new GUI if you don't like the one on the PS3.
You don't need any additional hardware, but you may have some sluggishness/buffering if your router is older or farther away.
Something I've actually noticed lately with TVersity (on my ps3) is that shows longer than 20-30 minutes seem to crash the server software for some reason. Guess I'll try ps3mediaserver once I get my ps3 back.
TVersity apparently has a long reputation of being much better on the Xbox 360, in regards to file support and other pretty important issues, so maybe support has gone to shit.
Funny enough, PS3Mediaserver also works for the Xbox 360.
Oh and I also forgot to mention that the java ps3 media server works with xbox 360 as well. Just go to video section of your xbox not media center section. Then once you click on video you should see it pop up in the list. The program itself is very easy to setup. Takes minutes and you are sharing all your media.
lol and another thing i forgot to mention is, if you plan to run .mkv files that are longer than a television episode, you might want to run a cat5e to your ps3. If you use wifi its going to lag and more than likely stop playing. Same goes with .iso files. Anything larger than 1 gig will basically do this. regular avi movies and television shows work flawlessly though. But hard wired network will work. Sometimes on a wifi setup you can pause the movie for a minute or two and let it buffer up and it should work, but you still might experience glitching and lag. But it will encode and play mkv and image files of all nature so if you have the full dvd image file of the movie it will mount and play it on your ps3. Pretty awesome program. Also take in consideration the speed of your cpu. I would recommend a dual core cpu or better to run anything aside from avi movies. I have a core 2 duo e6600 in my server and it eats up about 50% of my cpu while watching high def mkv's. SO anything slower will really hog up the cpu.

Already mentioned that, pal. But it does work with the Xbox 360 well (TVersity is better on that specific console, except in regard to MKVs....much better rewinding/fast forwarding functions).
