The BugBear Menace - Round 3

The clan of bugbears stand motionless for several seconds, a look of confusion on each of their faces. They start to shake their heads to clear the cobwebs away, hunching their shoulders and stretching their arms and legs. The group has the appearance of being rooted in place for at least two months, stuck in a sort of stasis waiting for the moment when they're allowed to continue the assault.

    That moment is now.

Snapping out of his ennui, Brichlush retreats across the diamond-shaped den, harried as he goes by the conjured hawk Flight brought forth. As the bugbear retreats, the insect swarm choking the hallway advances, enveloping Valesti and Faergus into the midst of a vortex of stingers and biting mandibles.

As the party keeps their focus forward, the lone bugbear which disappeared only moments before pops into existence behind Flight, jabbing a short sword into the mass of mechanical beetles which make up the warforged's back. The blow was slight, but the damage was starting to mount.

The Dwarf flailed her axes uselessly as the bugs swarmed about. "I knew we were tempting fate!" She stumbles out of the cloud of insects, noticing the reappearance of the bugbear that had momentarily eluded her. Valesti tossed her weapon without even pausing, redeploying to the rear of the group to avoid the swarm, catching the axe absentmindedly, more worried about the pests that might follow her.

Whether it was the last few of the flies that were still stinging and biting me, or perhaps a little bit of rash from being slid against the cold stone floor, either way I open my eyes. I see Valesti, and Faergus get caught up in the swarm of flies, I couldn't really see Quinn, just an outline. Flight was stabbed by one of the bugbears I saw in the room, and Valesti quickly returned the favor to the bugbear with a hurl of her axe. I stand up wearily, grab a shuriken, and send it flying to the bugbear that hit Flight, hitting him in the side.

Faergus blinks. Once. Twice. What was that? But he has no time to ponder the strange sense of the universe tilting on it side, because he is suddenly surrounded by a horde of biting insects, there are axes and shuriken whizzing past, and one of the bugbears is kind enough to present himself as a target. Well then, can't allow that to go to waste.

The Dragonborn steps past Quinn and swings.

    Standard Action: Enfeebling Strike vs Lurker 1 (AC 19): 1d20+10 -> 11

Note: Lurker1 is marked, and receives 8 points of radiant damage if he makes an attack that doesn't include Faergus.

The peculiarity of recent events must've affected Faergus more than he thought. He misses.

The BugBear Menace - Round 3

While the companions turn their attention to the bugbear in their midst, the rest of the group start to fortify their positions within the diamond-shaped room. The last of the creatures is awoken from its slumber, and two of the flail-wielding humanoids take up positions on either side of the hallway, utilizing the cover afforded by the slanted walls and preparing to strike anyone entering the room.

    Move: Wild Shift to swarm
Standard: Swarming Locusts vs Reflex (Lurker 1): 1d20+7 10 MISS covering the same zone as the flies

Flight's form shudders for a moment, too many of the mechanized beetles had been damaged. They activated a repair algorithm and fell into the less energy-using swarm. Even as specially-tasked repair drones were beginning their work, the remaining functional warforged launch an attack against the now-isolated bugbear.

The attack is mostly ineffectual, there just weren't enough on the attack this time. The beetles did throw the beast off balance and began to fend off the swarm of living, breathing flies in the area as well.

The BugBear Menace - Round 4

The lone bugbear facing the companions stumbles back towards its lair, realizing much too late that it was in over its head; gasping for breath as it makes its way through the buzzing locusts and biting flies that choke the hallway.

Brichlush stands contemptuously at the end of the hallway, making a small 'shooing' motion with his hand as he maneuvers the swarm of flies so that it covers most of the interlopers. Then he shouts loudly enough to be sure the companions hear him.

"Bugbears, advance! Bring me the would-be spy alive; Lareth will want to torture him for information. Kill the rest!"

The rest of the bugbears slam mace to shield, ready to march into the hallway.

Valesti darted off to the side as the cloud of insects started to move her way, narrowly escaping the main body of the swarm. She made an effort to strike the fleeing bugbear, but lost sight of her weapon as soon as it entered the mass of flying bugs. The BugBear Menace - Round 4

Just as Faergus reaches the front line of bugbears one of the minions takes an ineffectual swing at him, clearly prepared for the advance but seemingly unnerved by the Dragonborn Paladin of Pelor.

The rest of the bugbears take advantage of the lone combatant, crowding in on him. Another pair of bugbear guards swing at Faergus; one of them connecting for a light blow across his arm.

The last of the bugbears draws a short sword, then trots across the diamond-shaped room, disappearing from Faergus's view completely. A second later the bugbear appears out of the ether, driving his weapon into the Paladin's side.

Quinn groaned and realized he would have to venture back through the swarm to engage the rest of the foes. He covered his face, and held his breath until he was on the other side. Faergus was badly injured, but Quinn wanted to give him some breathing room. With a flourish, he struck the point of his sword on the stone floor and a ripple of sound burst forth, heading straight for the larger bugbear. The note of sound knocked the bugbear off balance, allowing Faergus another chance to strike. Faergus connected soundly and the combined force of the blow knocked the bugbear back further.

"The tables have turned on you bugbears, quit before you reach a bad end!" Quinn's voice seems to knit Faergus' injuries back together, stopping the bleeding and keeping the dragonborn alive for at least a little longer.

The BugBear Menace - Round 5

"Do not listen to the interloper. None can withstand the might of the DeathClaw Clan! Now, let us deliver these spies to their puny gods!"

Moving back across the room while leaning heavily on his staff, Brichlush reaches out a gaunt hand and grasps Faergus on the shoulder, sending a jolt of pain through the Dragonborn's body replacing the warmth of Quinn's song with the cold, painful thought of death.

Valesti moved down the hall, covering her face as she dashed through the cloud of insects. Both axes were thrown, one striking down a bugbear before returning to her hand, the other not quite curving around the corner like she had planned. Even as the weapon clattered off a wall behind the enemy, she was already drawing another axe to replace it.

Looking at the potion in hand, shuriken in the other, and watching everyone else run down the hallway I contemplate my usefulness.

I run a little bit away from the entrance of the hallway so that I could try to use the opening as cover. Looking down the hallway I see the bug bears have assaulted Faergus. Brichlush, grabbing Faergus with some sort of spell intertwined had caused him quite a bit of pain. Faergus seemed to accept it graciously though, as to return the favor ten-fold.

I send shuriken down the hall, the target was Brichlush. I was hoping to return my favor to him and his minions, while helping Faergus out, and Indeed I did.

The BugBear Menace - Round 5

The lone remaining guard looked a little unsure about continuing the assault, hesitating slightly and lowering his weapon for a moment. Brichlush needed. Stepping towards the Dragonborn, the minion heeded the Paladin's challenge and took a half-hearted swing which glanced off Faergus's shield.

Faergus feels the tendrils of the bugbear's magic ice their way deep into him. He is covered in cuts and bruises and is at his limit. But what is faith for if not this? The BugBear Menace - Round 5

The cloaked bugbear with the short sword shakes itself briefly to dislodge the various icicles and frost brought on by the Dragonborn's breath then looks to Brichlush pleadingly. The larger bugbear just stares back, hatred and anger evident on his face.

Turning back to Faergus with a visible sigh, the bugbear brandishes his short sword and starts to weave his way through the companions. He darts in and out, and his short sword stabs out at the Paladin, cutting through his defenses and dispersing some of the temporary aid he had been granted. Continuing to move, the bugbear lashes out again, this time at the mass of mechanical beetles that chokes the hallway. His aim is true once more, but Flight's defenses resist most of the damage and only a few of the insects are damaged. The bugbear then howls in pain as the might of Pelor punishes him for ignoring Faergus's mark.

His second attack completed, the bugbear turns back to grin at Brichlush before disappearing before everyone's eyes. The party can still hear the humanoid making his way out into the main room towards Alfonse. Then suddenly the sound of footfalls increases as everyone hears him start to run in the direction of the hallway, exiting the room.

Knowing that he has been betrayed, Brichlush screams in anger, focusing once more on Faergus.

"You will not defeat Brichlush. I will kill you all single-handedly!"

The locusts Quinn stood in began to tear away at his flesh, burrowing under his armor. As he moved out of the swarm, he appeared to be bleeding from a number of bite wounds on his body. Faergus and flight both appeared, but Quinn needed to get at the larger bugbear. Ignoring the smaller, he attempted to move towards Bricklush. He turned back to Faergus, and said "Pelor's will is strong, but you are in no shape to hold all of the enemies back at once." He struck Brichlush twice in quick succession, the first blow glancing off the creature's armor, the second connecting with a sickening crack to the shoulder. Quinn's allies felt invigorated by the strike, and he pressed them to attack. "Strike him down while you can!"

The BugBear Menace - Round 6

As Quinn passes the smaller bugbear raises his flail, then quickly glances at Faergus and chooses not to strike, drawing another scream from Brichlush.

"I AM BETRAYED ON ALL SIDES!"

The large bugbear grows more and more incoherent as the seconds tick away. Epithets of rage and hate turn into nothing more than snarling and screaming. Brichlush descends into a sort of anger-fueled madness, and lashes out twices in quick succession at Quinn. The first attack connects, digging deep into the half-elf's chest. A surge of necrotic energy flows from the bugbear nearly dropping Quinn to his knees. Thrown off slightly from the first attack, the second swipe clangs clumsily into the bard's shield.

Valesti dashed from one cloud of bugs to another, although the second was, thankfully, rather more friendly and less bitey. Her axes flew and the remaining minion fell, leaving Brichlush the last bugbear standing. One axe was drawn from a bandolier as she moved, keeping Faergus between herself and their enemy. "No time to be standing around bleeding, dragon. Get on with it."

Repositioning far from the swarm of enemy insects, her returning axe likewise altered course to meet her. It was barely in her hand before she spun and threw once more. Only the cruel, barbed weapon found its way to her target once again, one of her father's axes skidding to the floor to join the others. "I'm starting to rely too much on this thing..." She grumbled to herself even as she once again plucked the magical weapon from the air.

The BugBear Menace - Round 6

The pile of bugbear bodies grows steadily. The group can hear the distant footfalls of the fleeing lurker, leaving Brichlush as the last enemy standing. The large humanoid froths at the mouth, the pupils of his eyes dilated to the point that his red irises are almost non-existent. Blood flows freely from a multitude of wounds and the beast staggers visibly but remains standing, fueled by rage alone.

Quinn grasps the medallion of St. Cuthbert lying on his neck and mouths a silent prayer as he steps away from Brichlush. The bugbear recoils at the silent words, confused. The BugBear Menace: Encounter Complete

Brichlush seethes and spits, grasping the charred pulsing staff in both hands as if it was a giant club. His breathing becoming more and more ragged he sucks in as much air as he can and screams a warcry. Far from being an intimidating yell it comes out more like a diseased wheeze, punctuated by coughs that produce blood onto the bugbear's lips.

He raises the weapon over his head as if to strike at Faergus, determination highlighting his face. Before delivering the stroke he looks around the room at the carnage the battle has wrought. Bugbear bodies fill the hallway and litter the floor. Seeing the price that his people have paid his breathing calms and much of the rage seems to seep out of his body much like the rivulets of blood coursing down his skin. His shoulders slump and his head drops. He drops to his knees and holds the staff out in front of him as an offering, staying still for several seconds before placing it gently onto the floor. As soon as he releases the staff you see the surface of the weapon start to change. The wood slowly reverts from a blackened, charred surface to a pristine white surface that is glowing and vibrant.

Brichlush remains in his kneeling pose. When he speaks his voice still echoes throughout the room but it lacks the bloodlust and rage that he previously had, sounding almost as if his will had been broken.

"You have won. I cannot stand against such superior combatants. I have served the Master dutifully, but charging headlong into death was never part of the deal. Now my clan is obliterated, and my thoughts turn to survival more than loyalty.

I do not know why you have come here, but if your goal is to destroy or usurp the Master of this place I know much that would interest you. I am privy to a great many things that go on here, deep within the ruins of this old fort. I would be willing to part with that information…if you were to allow me to leave?"

While he speaks he keeps his head lowered, eyes pointed to the floor. As he asks his final question he looks up slightly. His body language and facial expression show complete submission, but there is still guile and cunning behind his eyes.

    OOC
Consider this a short rest and use whatever surges you need to (remember Quinn's +5/surge bonus for Song of Rest). There are piles of furs that act as beds for each bugbear, and Brichlush's bed at the northern end of the room is an actual cot lined with more pristine looking furs. Perception checks if you're searching the area (I'll let you roll them as you RP)

Also, as a reminder (since we had the long break in the middle of this encounter) - You made a deal with the Gnolls to take out the Bugbears and bring back the leader's head in exchange for information about Lareth and his troops
    The staff is:

"We may parlay...Brichlush, but in a moment." After checking his allies wounds and performing minor funerary rites on the dead bugbears, Quinn turns to the chieftan and says "you are lucky that you've given up, but frankly, you put us into a bind. The gnoll leader wants your head. You understand that the easiest solution would be to provide it," idly thumbing the hilt of his sword. "You're likely to double-cross us as soon as you can. Why shouldn't we just kill both of you and save a lot of bother?" Quinn's voice, is tired, cold and determined. The cunning in the eyes of Brichlush is met with steel in Quinn's.
Quinn spends two healing surges during the short rest and is at 32/33.

Remember, it's DC 11 to assist with any skill. +2 if successful, -1 if fail. This means it's always good to assist if you need only 1-11 to succeed (because of the way that the average rolls work). If you need a 12 or >, please don't.

As one cloud of insects disappears, the room becomes strangely quiet. Valesti seems wary of this sudden surrender, but she'll let the religious types have their way with the monster. She uses this time to gather up any stray axes. "Well, maybe we should just walk him back to the gnoll?" She glances back to where Quinn was staring down the bugbear. "Show him this guy and he'll probably still give us some info. The bugbear here might even tell us what he knows if we let him keep his little stick to defend himself with." She shrugs, then smiles. "It's safe to say you couldn't take us on in your condition. But you might stand a fighting chance against the gnolls."

After retrieving her weapons, she assists with searching the room. "You guys figure it out, we should head out soon. Who knows where his sneaky friend wandered off to..."

While bandaging myself, I look at Brichlush, "What of the dragonborn Drex that you have much distaste for? Where might he be?". Walking around and poking around at some of the cots, I look to the rest of the group, "I don't know what they will do with you, but torturing information out of you is not one of my options. Even if you had expressed that you in fact would torture me, but we want to know what Lareth is trying to accomplish."

With the fight over, at least for now, the many beetles withdraw to a corner. A trail of black fluid is left behind as smashed bugs are dragged by their still functioning counterparts to a corner of the room.

Flight tries to drag itself back into a humanoid shape, but succeeds only in forming a partial torso, a head, and a scattering of other hardly recognizable forms. "Bu---ding ... cons-zzzz-en---zs---"

The swarm falls back apart to repair the damage before trying to speak again.
Spend two healing surges to get back to full (wasted some hp there, but I'd rather be full than 7 shy).

Faergus checks his swing as the bugbear pleads (in his own way) for mercy. The dragonborn is bone tired, cut in nearly a dozen places, but this is no time for weakness. The cunning in the Brichlushes yes is plain to see.

The temptation to play us for fools is strong, but be wise instead. You are surrounded and we have no patience for foolishness. Test our mercy and you will see that it is dangerously thin."

Looks like I help Quinn without any problems.

Also I want to take a stab at Insight into how and when he might try to mislead us.

Finally, I burn two surges to get back to full health.

Brichlush eyes the party suspiciously as they speak, seeming almost curious about the mass of insects struggling to reform themselves into one form in the corner. He spends several seconds in thought, weighing the words of each of the companions in turn before responding.

"So the miserable gnolls hired mercenaries to destroy me and my Clan. I should have known they wouldn't have the guts to face me themselves." Waving a hand dismissively he continues, "Though I do have to say that I admire their attempt to gain favor."

"This dungeon is thick with fools, though I do not count myself among them. Many here blindly follow The Master based on what they would call 'faith'," he openly sneers at the word, "but I saw only profit and the advancement of my Clan. We served and received many rewards; many more than the wretched dogmen who expected to be paid for their laziness."

He lets out a raspy cough or two which sound almost like a chuckle, "If you think I would double-cross you then you have no idea who or what you're dealing with in this place. I could deliver you to The Master via misinformation but I would not be commended for doing so. Instead I would be beaten and possibly killed for allowing my bugbears to be slaughtered. You see my clan and I were nothing more than resources to be used at his discretion. Being responsible for the loss of a great many resources is not a way to gain favor; it is a good way to lose the weight of your head from your shoulders, however."

"No, I have only one course of action available to me; flee. Duck out the back way with my tail between my legs like a disgraceful thug. It disgusts me to think of it, but death is even less tasteful. If betraying my employer is the only path to my freedom, then so be it."

"You ask me what I have to offer in exchange for my life. I can tell you that I know more about the troops and workings of this place than that fool Yargrosh. The gnolls were foot soldiers, minions to be sent as stocks of wheat before the scythe if needs be. I have sat at the right hand of The Master and know much about what you might face if you try to defeat him, as well as names, patrol routes, contacts and many other things. That is what I offer."

He pauses for just a moment and grins slightly. "One other thing I can offer that might be of use to you is the location of a secret room that no one else, not even The Master himself knows about. My guards happened upon it while patrolling one night and we have checked it each night since to see if anyone has found it, but no one has. Given the…condition of some of your group learning that location might be something of value, perhaps?"

Thinking again for a moment, a look of anger and hatred comes over him, "I would also like very much to see those bastard dogs slaughtered for their role in the destruction of my Clan and my station, and for that I can provide you with something else; the location of a cache of wealth that has been hidden here within the dungeon."

Looking at Faergus directly, Brichlush extends his arm and points a bony finger at the dragonborn. "Paladin, promise me that I may leave and I will tell you all that I know."

    Perception: Alfonse, Valesti
The two of you rummage through the beddings of the slain bugbears and manage to turn up 168 gold pieces. Alfonse also locates a Potion of Healing lodged between Brichlush's cot and the wall.

    Insight: Faergus
You can sense that Brichlush is lobbying hard for his life, but you are inclined to believe that what he has said is true. He also seemed slightly surprised at Alfonse's mention of Lareth. Perhaps he forgot that he was the one to mention that name first during the heat of the battle.

The ridges along the dragonborn's nostrils flare. Don't dare," he says, to trade upon my honor. There's justice as well as mercy under Pelor's light, and surely as the sun rises in the east, you have committed crimes for which you deserve punishment. I would not see you loose to commit more mischief. Even if it imperils my own life. Let me strike at your master naked than make such a deal.

Faergus snorts and the air before him frosts cold.

We should do with this fool, like we did his friend on the road. Take his head, and then we'll deal with the dog people after.

Quinn watched the bugbear closely through the talks, his gaze never wavering from Brichlush's, even as Faergus spoke. After a moment, he pointed in the direction of the gnolls, and in a low voice said "no, not today. I am tired of fighting and bloodshed. Tell us all that you know, and afterwards you may be allowed to leave of your own accord. That said, if we ever find you or your cohorts up to mischief again, rest assured that mercy will not come. Our fury will not be abated by honeyed words." He sighed, and suddenly looked older than his years. "We are giving you a chance to change for the better. Will you take it?"

Brichlush's looks at Quinn and his face breaks into a toothy grin which reveals yellowed, dessicated teeth. "It would seem that though frost issues forth from the Dragonborn's nostrils that you are the cooler head. I knew there was one among you that realized the value of information. I accept your offer."

The large bugbear pulls himself to his feet. You realize now just how large the beast is, towering over even the dragonborn as he stretches to his full height. Almost as soon as he reaches his zenith, however, he breaks into a fit of deep, crackling coughs which double him over into the hunched position that he had throughout the battle.

"The Master, or Lareth as you seem to know his name, commands this dungeon from his quarters on the eastern side of the complex. If you have visited the cursed, wretched gnolls then you have come very near to his inner lair. Lareth does not venture out of his chambers except in two instances. First, he seems to be quite fond of the ogre Lubash and visits him every few days. Second, he despises being underground. He had his men dig a tunnel that leads out of the complex that he can use whenever he feels…claustrophobic."

"Lareth leaves most of the day to day activities of the complex to his lieutenant; the dragonborn Drex."
Brichlush nearly spits the name out in disgust, "Drex is as sadistic as he is egotistical. He loves nothing more than to heap praise upon himself of things that others have done, and is likely to kill those that disagree with him in a fit of rage. Still, he is competent and Lareth trusts him to manage the dozen or so troops, entirely made up of humans, that are Lareth's personal guard. The entire force is garrisoned outside of Lareth's chambers."

"The humans do not venture to this side of the complex except to deliver marching orders from Drex. He delights in ordering the gnolls and my bugbears, at least until you destroyed them just now, to go on raiding missions and bring back the spoils. I do know that the humans are not always in the barracks. Often times a large portion of the guard will leave, but neither Lareth nor Drex hints at what their missions are. In fact they're out right now, with only a skeleton crew of four guards and Drex himself left in the complex."

"If you plan to assault Lareth and his guard know that both he and Drex are formidable warriors. I have seen Lareth strike down six attackers with only his staff, and Drex is an accomplished swordsman. A more subtle approach might be more fruitful…Drex is always looking for recruits. Stroke his ego and you might be able to worm your way into the guard, or at least as minions. If you choose that route, show this recruitment ring to the guards. They will know that you are recruits from Brichlush and take you to Drex."

He removes a golden ring from one of his fingers that bears an insignia of a flaming eye, holding it out for Quinn to take.

"Last but not least. There is a secret area where the three hallways meet outside this chamber. If you loosen the stone closest to the floor where the northern hallway begins it will open the room. You would most likely be able to rest in there without interference. That is all that I know. I have honored my side of the bargain. May I leave in peace?"
