My wife and I also ate that bullshit. What made me angry was I stopped playing for a time because the bugs were too much (the most noteable group killer was the random you can't see your teammates one), when I wanted to play again fucking thing was gone.

Should have got something for giving them too much fucking money.

Yeah that's pretty shitty. I figured that since it was $150, and given the number of years we played Diablo 2, we'd absolutely get our money's worth. But, at the time, I didn't have $150 to spare (as I recall it was near Christmas, and presents were to be purchased).

Count me in as another one who took the lifetime. Granted, I really liked the game, still do, and if it was still running I'd have more than gotten my money's worth out of it; something about that gameplay style, simple as it is, just clicks with me and I enjoy it.

My only real complaint about the game itself was it spending the first skill point for you. No, thank you, game, but I really didn't want Arcane Bolt. Thanks for wasting that point for me.

Hellgate had some interesting decisions. Though one thing I hated was how meele was basically fucked on some fights. Like those god damn orbs and the orb bosses.

Borderlands was a much more enjoyable version of the modern diablo shooter to me. Maybe they learned from the mistakes hellgate made?

i remember playing hellgate and having a lot of fun, but yeah bugs are what killed it for me, i remember my guy's awesome looking armor have a hole in the middle of me that i could see through, which at that time I was going to school for modeling and game design.... so its hard for me to think someone getting paid to do that could get away with it

Whoa what, they didn't refund those? I had been under the impression they did. o_O

I came to the game late, missed basically all the initial hype and then requisite blowback. I really enjoyed the game actually, it scratched a great itch and I loved the art design. I think I enjoyed it more than Borderlands, but I will say it did suffer from the asset reuse, it got tiring seeing the same areas all the damn time.

But then I also more or less enjoyed Jericho so....

re-installed this off of DVD today... (who does that anymore..) anyways its nice having all the setting cranked.. the game still looks pretty good , I do have to say when they were closing doors they should have just released a patch to allow people to host there own multiplayer games.

As well as release the rest of the content as a patch....

does anyone know if there was some fan patches that allowed that?

    There was not.

Some fan patches started at one point to enable the online content into solo (they couldn't implement any sort of lan hosting or anything because the game wasn't set up at all to do that and they'd have had to build a system from the ground up, which wasn't a reasonable feat.), but after awhile all work on it was dropped.

Partially because of the scope of the project and also because there are, and were, persistent rumors that hanbitsoft was going to bring the game back to the west "soon". Which, as of yet, clearly hasn't taken place. I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Huh.

So I guess Hannbitsoft is actually serious about this return to Hellgate thing.

They've released a teaser site with a CG video that covers the "situation" in the game story, and a thing saying that hell has ravaged London; Tokyo is next.

No actual announcement or press release, yet, but it looks like they're really moving forward with bringing Hellgate outside of Korea and back to the rest of the world.

For some stupid fucking reason I'm actually a bit excited about it.

Anyway, Here is the teaser site. Just click on the logo to watch the video. It's actually pretty long. Mostly its just the movies from the game, but I think there's a bit more added in; or I just don't remember it.

And here is a bit more info; but not much.

Has anybody played this with the fan-made Revival patch/mod? It looks like it fixes quite a few issues with the game: http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=3

Also, Hellgate still has my favorite CGI cut-scenes of all-time. I kind of wish Flagship had taken all the money they spent developing Hellgate and just made a full animated movie in the setting.

Man that's not a new trailer, they just recycled all the old cinematics and mashed them into one long video. Though my major question is, if Tokyo will be a new location or THE new location? Cause I'd like to see the original game tightened up and re-released with Tokyo as a second half of the game.

Hellgate: Tokyo is supposed to be an expansion/sequel, with the content taking place after the end of London, at least that's what I can tell without speaking Japanese/Korean. There's some decent footage on YouTube and some other sites of the Asian beta tests.

    As do I.

I might check out that patch sometime. I was just thinking about loading this up again the other day.

EDIT: One of the bigger things that hurt them, IMO was the lack of any multiplayer other than their private servers. If there had been LAN and/or client hosting options like there is with Diablo and such, I think people really would have got into it more. It would have killed any option for a sub service, but honestly that was never gonna fly anyway. IMO they did that purely in hopes of recouping money to pay back their army of investors, and not really a design decision.

Hell, I bet a lot of people would still be playing it today with friends if you could have hosted games.

A friend ended up giving this game to me since he wouldn't have time to kill demons while training to be a Jesuit priest, for some reason. I was pretty disappointed by it. The intro and the cinematics built up this cool world that had a neat atmosphere, and then I start playing and it is all Collect 2 Dozen Dingo Kidneys and jokey missions, not to mention the bugs and questionable business model. It probably was an okay game that had a lot of fun lurking behind bugs, which I know plenty about since I really enjoyed KOTOR 2, but Single Playerish WOW: Demon Edition just isn't what I had expected from anything I had seen pre-release.

Very much agreed on this point. Some of the changes that were coming down the pipe would have helped the game greatly. They never made it to live servers.

And in regards to LAN play - absolutely, I would be playing it today quite often were that a possibility. Which makes Diablo 3 not offering that a red flag to me.

Follow Hellgate on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

    About Hellgate
Hellgate is an action RPG that allows you to play in a first-person or third-person perspective. Set 27 years into the future, an ancient prophecy made centuries ago has come true and the gates of hell have opened. Demons have overrun the world of man and roam our lands, destroying, pillaging and killing humans. With the world above ground abandoned, dark and burnt to hellfire, humans are forced into hiding to protect what remains of their race while making plans to take back a world that was once theirs. In the game, mankind escapes to the underground system under the sprawling metropolis of London. Prepare for a struggle for survival in a world that has become hell.

    About T3 Entertainment
T3 Entertainment is a major Korean MMO developer and publisher of online games with branches in Korea, Great Britain, China, Taiwan, and Japan. Its name was established in the Asian market with the blockbuster hit 'Audition' and has been quickly expanding since, with over 300 million current users in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. With a large work-force and skill in the development of online games, T3 Entertainment has won a “Best Game of the Year” award on numerous occasions for its various titles. In conjunction with Hanbitsoft, the company operates an online games portal consolidating its latest and most popular Free-to-Play MMO titles, found atwww.T3Fun.com. For more information about T3 Entertainment, please visit: www.t3.co.kr.

    About Redbana
Formed in April 2008, Redbana Corporation is the North American publishing arm of Korea’s leading videogame developer and publisher, T3 Entertainment. With the considerable support of its parent company, Redbana ultimately aims to take a place among the elite interactive entertainment studios in the North American market by offering the most high-quality and entertaining online games in the world that appeal to a wide audience of consumers. The company has released Audition Online, a rhythm-based online dance game with more than 300 million registered players worldwide, and most recently launched CardMon Hero, a popular Korean card-summoning MMORPG, while continuing development on the fast-paced hack-and-slash MMORPG Mythos. For more information about Redbana, please visit www.redbana.com.

    About HanbitSoft Inc.
HanbitSoft Inc. is one of the largest online game publishers in Korea as well as in Asia. HanbitSoft has continuously invested in developing and publishing excellent and promising online games. HanbitSoft has broad portfolio of online games ranging from casual games to high-end MMORPG’s, either developed in-house or by external development studios such as Joy Impact (WYD and MMORPG AIKA) IMC Games (Granado Espada), etc. HanbitSoft games have reached out to more than 40 countries including Europe and Brazil and it is focusing on pioneering overseas online game markets in an effort to be a “global leading publisher.” For more information, visit www.hanbitsoft.com.

The game will be F2P, limited beta starts next month.

IIRC the "global" version went into beta already in Korea last year. This could just be the effective stress test for it, since the game is already being played elsewhere from my understanding.

So this is interesting. Free is a good price. I'm sure they've got some sort of microtransaction system worked out but they haven't mentioned that. I just hope they don't go the korean mmo rout and making leveling up a god awful grind and just leave it how it was.
