On the Train: The Last One

Zack was kind enough to pick up the bill at Rio Grande, a gesture that had been generously mirrored by others before him. As a server, I am honor bound to refuse any fighting over a bill, and I know, perhaps too well at this point, how to accept charity. But still. You guys gave me a home and enthusiastically shared your time and the things you loved about your cities. Fed me. Wore down your cards and metro stubs. Indulged my alcoholism as I sometimes quaked in fear of yours. Laughed and sang with me. We braved meth heads and dreary weather and demonic cats. We lost count of the minutes at the club. Worked on our tennis elbow. Worshipped turkeys and dual wielded pies. Celebrated $1.25 per oz coffee and $1.25 tacos. Started a band that lasted ten minutes. Hunted for fairies in grottos and on mountain tops.

thank you all so much

thanks

Ladies and gentlemen, a few weeks ago, I came to you with a simple request; let me in to the places you sleep, and let me sleep there too, in fraternity. Also, we would drink and have fun and stuff. You know, the good life.

Well guess what: it's happening! On June 12th, 2011 I will sleepily board the train departing from New Orleans and go in a counter clockwise direction around the country, visiting all the spots you see here! All of them. You can see the itinerary here.

Closest Amtrak station to Lexington is in Cincinnati, but I don't mind picking you up from there.

Forget a couch, you could stay in a guest bedroom.

    King Street Station, in Seattle.

I can absolutely meet you at the station, but we will be riding a bus from there. Alternatively, if you can't make it quite this far north, I will probably head down to PDX if you end up visiting there.

I do have an awesome couch, though. It used to belong to a gay guy, so you know it's nice!

you could sleep on the couch at my folks' place with me if I'm around. I'm a 40-50 minute commuter ride outside of the city

I believe amtrak stops at croton harmon where I am, it would certainly stop at grand central

I have a couch in Chicago that's available.

Or failing that, there may also be an air mattress or sleeping bag.

Not only do I have a couch, I have a Guest Room! I'll have to swing it past the missus, but I'm sure she'll be fine with it.

I'm in Atlanta (Alpharetta technically, but whatever.) and don't seem to have anything planned out except for July 4th.

    Hello people!

Here is the itinerary so far

    https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=0rajqsnok330hl09jo884cp3ms%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Chicago

    (starts in June)

It will very likely be shifting up or down a day or so, but that should be about as much as it changes while i hammer out the details of an incoming couch and see if i can't avoid that horrible 69 hour Los angeles to houston train ride uggh

in any case, if you do not like what you are seeing let me know now and i will try to accommodate you. i've tried to keep my couches to a few days per host, but other schedules and amtrak shenanigans have in some cases forced me to either extend or shorten the average stay length which is where you will see deviation come in. if you have any concerns please lemme know, because i gotta get this stuff locked in sooner rather than later.

so far! the schedule maaay shift a day forward since i forgot to include phoenix's super cool atlanta room but i can't see it deviating too far from this unless i discover some alternate route that makes the trips less painful.

which i don't think will happen because i've done a lot of atlas'ing, but it's also 3 AM soooo who knows what i'll find in the morning.

that is really cool of you, but the dumb thing is that phoenix doesn't even connect to houston or really anything if you're trying to keep going south east

something like Tucson or along that latitude is my best bet

Hrm, and you're going to be coming through Arizona at the beginning of the week - not the best time for me to spend a couple days in Tucson (I do have family there).

Well, I guess if you have no other option, I can always just drive down and get you and bring you back to Phoenix. The question is - would you even want to be in Phoenix during the middle of summer? It's going to be 110+ degrees.

I would have liked to see the state, definitely, but I actually managed to find an LA-Houston route that only takes 30 hours as opposed to sixty-infinity. and i'll be able to peer at it from my train which is actually still pretty cool. amtrak lines are surprisingly scenic.

anyway the itinerary is finalized yaay! I'll be contact you guys shortly to get the thumbs up on the schedule but I don't expect it to change from this point at all.

I have a spare room to crash in for a few days if needed in PDX. Can't say much about my work schedule that far out, but given how much I have traveled, it will be good to give back to fellow travelers. Let me know if I can be assistance.

I’ve been dancing around the idea for a little while now, talked with a couple of people about it, and I think that the weekend Tarranon comes to NYC would be an excellent time for a forum meetup!

For a couple of reasons, my first thoughts are to hold a get-together Friday night here in the city. Dinner, drinks, and maybe some tone-deaf karaoke if we’re feeling up to it? I know of a few places we could go, but I’d like to get a rough idea of how many people we’ll have as well as hear any suggestions you guys have before any decisions on location are made.

So who’s up for some shenanigans!?
