Not So Serious Playing-Into-The-Stereotype Introduction
You see that guy up there, with his arms in the air? He's celebrating because he's fucking incredible. He's number one, and everybody else is like, number
a million or some shit. There's a supermodel blowing him just out of frame. You wish you could be him. Hell, you wish you could be
the supermodel. Why is he so blindingly awesome you might ask? Because he's an iRacer. I'm an iRacer too. iRacing makes Gran Turismo look like Driving Miss Daisy. It makes Forza look like [vidurl=

you're worse. Deal with it.
Serious Introduction Containing Actual Information and Less ProfanityiRacing.com Motorsport Simulations is an online only multiplayer racing simulator for PC. It is used both by sim racing enthusiasts and genuine racing drivers to hone their craft thanks to its extraordinary realism. Its
tracks and
cars are scanned in with lasers for millimetre level accuracy. Did you hit a bump on the apex of the penultimate corner at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course? It's really there. They're
all really there. Don't take my word for it, listen to some
actual racing drivers talk up the service! Surely they're just being paid to say nice things? No sir! They're
actually using it. Scott Speed (ex Toro Rosso F1 and current NASCAR Nationwide Series driver) last raced on iRacing earlier
this morning and Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced last week at the Talladega Superspeedway to name but two. Yes, of course he fucking won. He's
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
iRacing.com caters to both Oval and Road racers with a wide variety of officially licensed tracks and cars along with officially sanctioned series like the NASCAR Championship and World Drivers Championship both of which offer a cool $10,000 to the winner. There's no question about it - this shit is
serious business. Also, thanks to the service's unique Safety Rating system, safe driving is encouraged and those who cause wrecks deliberately are severely punished. There's no question that iRacing is the closest thing to actual racing.
Holy Balls, What on Earth Does Such a Thing Look and/or Sound Like?
Surely There's a Catch?
Well yes. Yes there is: Money. iRacing has both a subscription fee (anywhere from $7.46 to $12 per month depending on subscription length) and also the requirement that you buy cars and tracks before you can race them ($11.95 for cars and $11.95 or $14.95 for tracks depending on track type.) However, we can do a little trick to lessen the impact. See, this isn't a game, it's a
simulation. It's not entertainment, it's a
hobby. Now it looks cheap! We just tricked our brain into justifying the costs! The joke's on you stupid brain!
You can also gain credit simply by racing, up to a maximum of $40 per year, to offset the costs of subscription or car/track purchases. Assuming that you have a two year membership and meet the credit requirements to receive the full $80 during that period the monthly subscription could be as low as $4.13.
For beginners just wanting to check out the service there is a
cheap introductory deal. You can currently subscribe for one month (at $12) and get two extra months free! This includes several beginner tracks and cars such as Laguna Seca and the Mazda MX-5. By the time your subscription comes up for renewal you'll be so hopelessly hooked that you'll be throwing your wallet at the screen like some kind of madman! I'm so terribly sorry!
Equipment
iRacing does support gamepads. For the love of God, don't use one. This is the most serious racing simulator out there and you can't be short of cash if you're thinking of signing up. Get a decent wheel. And some extra monitors. Maybe a racing chair too. Preferably one with hydraulics like [vidurl=
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0irQZeE2fho]this hero[/vidurl]. You know he gets all the girls, right? That's why there's so few left over for the rest of us. If you don't like girls that much you can just get a wheel. Whatever.
So, let's talk about iRacing!
[tiny]Oh God please let there be PAers who care...[/tiny]
Posts
I could have sworn there was an old iRacing thread somewhere....
Good point, done.
I saw iRacing get mentioned a few times in the other racing threads, but I didn't find a specific thread. If it's out there it's hiding from me.
What are you driving? I'm running the Star Mazda right now.
I do race in a league, however. Monday nights:
http://www.israleague.com
I run the MX-5 in their mixed class racing league. They are expanding to three leagues soon. The main, GTC will run the Vette, V8 and Late Model. Yes, the Late Model. It's AWESOME on road courses, you simply have to try it.
The second series is STC, they will run the Mustang and MX-5 on smaller tracks.
The third, unannounced right now, will probably be an open-wheel car. Not sure yet, though.
