I keep seeing people say that they want to use a 3DS as a controller for a home console.
Why exactly? What possible purpose does it serve?
I'd personally find a proper controller more comfortable to hold, the 3DS would have way worse battery life than any controller, and hopefully if Nintendo are making a vaguely traditionally controller I imagine it would have two analogue sticks.
Rockstar has a dev kit
- working on GTA V (which is sure to hit PS3/360 as well)
- hoping to have it available at launch
- system still looking at a late 2012 launch (June in Japan is last we heard)
- expect tech demos and some games shown at E3
GTA as a potential Launch Title for a Nintendo console?
I'm pretty sure the bible mentioned this. It's the end times

GTA definitely will not be a launch title. It'll be a first wave title, or whatever you call the stuff that comes out six to eight months after the launch.
I mean, had there ever been a Rockstar game that was a launch title for a system before? Rockstar tends to market their games almost like systems themselves, they just happen to come on a disc instead of in a tower. No way they'd unveil their next big thing at the same time as Nintendo. Plus it'd be tantamount to declaring second-party status with Nintendo in the eyes of everyone else, and the world will never be weird enough for that to happen.

I could see some games like Mario Kart using the 3ds as a controller, being able to use the screen as a map/ review mirror could be pretty amazing.
I guess if the controller has its own screen though it could do the same thing so never mind.
I will be pissed if I have to buy a handheld so that I can play a console. Fortunately, I find it highly unlikely the controller for the new console will be the 3DS.

It wont be because of the intense level of Vomit going back and forth between the 3DS and a standard screen would cause.
and I guess because that would be incredibly stupid. Maybe it would have the ability to be a controller but Even then it would never be mandatory.

Is this actually a problem people have reported? I know that going from looking at a standard screen (2D) to things in the real world (3D) has never caused me any problems.
But yes, the 3DS won't be the controller, because the 3DS costs $250.
If you do it like a hundred times in a row with no rest you'll probably feel nauseated because your brain has to recompute what you're viewing. But I doubt vomiting will happen.
Then again I'm pretty sure Riptor was just kidding.
I think if the controller does have a HD screen on it, it will mainly be for those augmented reality games. The 3DS does this really well and was quite impressive. Obviously it will be able to do other things and have other uses, but I think this will be it's main function.
I also don't think the controller will be the 'big announcement' I think they wil have something else up their sleeves.

Do bear in mind that augmented reality would also require a camera on the controller... unless it's possible to make transparent screens these days?
That said, it sounds like the sort of thing Nintendo might have fun with. Point the controller at the big screen, and the camera makes it look like you're seeing it "through" the controller's panel but with more information added.

That would have been an awesome way to handle the eye of truth in the n64 zelda games. For extra freakout it could show you little monsters crawling across your floor when you have it pointed away from the screen.

That sounds about as practical as looking over your shoulder to look behind you while driving an actual car, rather than having the rear view mirror right there in front. Unless you intend to play the game with your controller in front of your face.
Besides, haven't people played the GC+GBA Zelda games? Having to look down every time you went indoors got old fast.

Nah, I'd say it's more a matter of system launches not coinciding with GTA launches. Sure, Rockstar likes to get loads of publicity, but if GTA5 manages to get pegged as the Wii 2's killer app, I'm sure they won't mind. Nintendo's been more supportive of high-profile third-party games lately. Hell, they're even featuring Street Fighter IV prominently as the 3DS' killer game.
At any rate. It's certainly possible GTA5 could be a launch game, since 2012 seems to be about right for a new GTA given their development cycles. Then again, it would be a pretty big stroke of luck if it does happen, since a delay to polish the game could bump it away from launch day.
I don't know if it's been said yet, but I have a prediction for the gimmick. It will probably work something like a local WiFi OnCloud service. The "Project Cafe" codename triggers so many ideas in my mind about the direction they're going with this. I can see they're going to market this as being able to run a Project Cafe server (the main console) in internet cafes, Starbucks, Airports, Colleges etc. And you'll be able to show up with your personal controller and play HD multiplayer right there better quality than any portable could feasibly do. Then you take your controller home and log in again play with a different community using your tv.

If this happens I would do horrible, horrible things to people if necessary to make sure they make an incredibly awesome alternate reality sequel to Eternal Darkness...

Even with a transparent screen it would still need a camera. Don't know why, but I just took it for granted that it would have one.
And interestingly enough, transparent screens are currently available I believe, using OLED technology.

Thinking about the name has me thinking it could be the whole system is just a tablet, with wireless hdmi outputs so you can hold it on the couch and also take it with you anywhere and play games on just the tablet or any hdtv.
but that doesn't sound like something nintendo would do.
it would simple, elegant, and immediately attractive to the broad market. Navigating on the dashboard via tablet would be a breeze, and though it wouldn't change the landscape of gaming at all, it would be a worthwhile addition imo.
Also, there have been a couple rumors of the wii2 being very very powerful but that one of the "secrets" of the console sucks up a lot of processing power. What if the OS is always running in the background, similar to the 3DS? If so, you could at any time pause your game, video chat with friends, surf the web, explore shop content, etc., all without having to stop the game you're playing. Revolutionary? No, not at all, but it would be pretty damn neat.
In light of the above mockup, might as well post what I posted elsewhere:
I don't understand why anyone would ever consider that it would be a controller without buttons, touch screen only.
The only reason anyone assumes that a screen is involved is because there are rumors that say so. The same rumors that say it's got analog sticks and triggers. There is no rumor that claims it's only a screen.
Why would anyone jump to that conclusion? Nintendo knows the importance of buttons just as much as anyone else, and then you have the host of rumors talking about how it'll cater to the hardcore...and the hardcore need buttons.
Ridiculous to think otherwise.
Also, expect any and all content for that controller screen to be streamed directly from the console at all times. Way too expensive to consider that a whole portable gaming system would be housed in every controller, even a simple one.

Stuff like this would raise the price of the console a lot. While neat, it would basically be raising the price of the console by $150 or more for a minor feature that isn't vital to the system. In a market of trying to reduce costs as much as possible to avoid another PS3 fiasco, this doesn't make sense. It would make a lot more sense to add functionality to the 3DS to allow it to do this if that was the plan.

The rumors don't refer to a tablet though, it's a normal-ish controller with a screen in it. A controller plus a tablet that ships with every console is a complete shot in the dark IMO.

I suppose you're right. What the guys on gaf who are making these concept pics are struggling with though is how the hell do you fit a 6" screen on a controller without making it look horrendous and unwieldly?
a 6" screen is unwieldly. adding anything to make it more controllery is only going to make it moreso.
there is either something we're missing, something we've been told is wrong, or nintendo is retarded at interfaces. i'm pretty sure it's not the third.
■Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Activision, Rockstar/Take Two, Electronic Arts, Namco and Ubisoft all have development kits.
■They each have at least one game in development for the Wii 2.
■Expect games to be coming to this system that you would never expect on a Nintendo console.
■Nintendo is kissing third party ****s with this console.
■The new Nintendo controller sounds more ridiculous on paper. When you actually see the thing, it makes a lot more sense from a design standard.
■Expect Nintendo to roll out the red carpet for third parties so their games don’t get overshadowed. Nintendo has been preaching to third parties that third parties won’t get screwed this time around, so if you’re expecting a ton of amazing first party games at launch…well…think again. Nintendo wants a launch that creates confidence in third parties again so expect very few first party games at launch similar to the 3DS.
■Star Fox is coming. I can’t say when. Very good chance that it WONT be at E3. I am hearing Star Fox is coming for the new Nintendo system, but it is very early in development.
■Nintendo solved every storage issue a third party could possibly have with the new console. I don’t know if it’s a harddrive or a different, cheaper way to store data.
■Nintendo revamping their WiiWare and virtual console services. I don’t think it will be called WiiWare anymore.
■Almost positive that we’ll be seeing Pikmin in some shape or form.
■A first person shooter that people love will be ported to the 3DS. I can’t say what game, but it’s popular among FPS gamers.
■Expect a crapload of 3DS love at this E3. The show will be wayyy more 3DS than Wii 2 (Project Cafe). 3DS stuff will be at least 60 percent of the E3 pre-show.
■Don’t listen to anyone who says new Nintendo console will launch by end of 2011. They are idiots. This holiday season is all about the 3DS and Nintendo’s E3 show will focus on that.
■Don’t expect many games to be shown at E3 for new Nintendo console, but expect all of the key features to be revealed.
■Nintendo is thinking about launching Zelda: Skyward Sword around the same time as Wii 2 since Wii 2 is backwards compatible with Wii 1 games. They want to follow the same strategy when they launched Pokemon Black/White when 3DS was coming out.
■I am 90 percent sure you will not see a Zelda: Skyward Sword port to the Wii 2. It will remain a Wii 1 game.
■Nintendo approached Hideo Kojima about the new Nintendo console. Nintendo and Hideo Kojima have a good relationship with each other.
■A Resident Evil game is in development for the new Nintendo system. I don’t know if Capcom is developing an RE spinoff or something part of the “main” Resident Evil series.
■Retrostudios started working on a Wii 2 game. It is NOT Metroid. Retro is done with Metroid.
Yeah, I'm calling bogus on a lot of these "rumors". Did someone come along with sudden knowledge of the inner workings of every company in the business? Where has s/he been for all this time?

If the 6" screen rumor is right, I think it'll be a companion tablet that there's only one of per console rather than something that's on every controller.
Stuff like this would raise the price of the console a lot. While neat, it would basically be raising the price of the console by $150 or more for a minor feature that isn't vital to the system.
while that's definitely true, I think you could say the same about making a touch screen standard on every controller. Are these controllers going to cost $80-$100?
