Haha... Amusing story I heard from a guy at Gamestop (not an employee).
He said that Nintendo's having financial trouble... Their home consoles aren't bringing in the money, and the only thing keeping them afloat is their portable systems.
You know what would be cool? If these starfox and retro rumors were one in the same and Nintendo had given them the reigns on the next title in the franchise.
But alas, the world is not yet ready for such a high amount of awesome.
Nintendo gave Retro Metroid, and then Donkey Kong: both historically important franchises with a lot of hardcore appeal, which had fallen by the wayside.
someone should go out and make a simple website masquerading as a video game news outlet and just make shit up and see how many other outlets pick up the rumors.

I'd like to see Retro try their hand at their own IP. They've certainly earned it. Nothing against the franchises themselves.
Historically, it could either be bad or good. But there's usually a clamour for something fresh among the sequels and remakes.

When I was younger I always dreamed of having a big, highly respected gaming news site and then suddenly release a huge batch of ridiculously-fake-but-plausible news and go out in a blaze of glory.
The rumors don't refer to a tablet though, it's a normal-ish controller with a screen in it. A controller plus a tablet that ships with every console is a complete shot in the dark IMO.
I suppose you're right. What the guys on gaf who are making these concept pics are struggling with though is how the hell do you fit a 6" screen on a controller without making it look horrendous and unwieldly?
Retro Studios working on “a project everyone wants us to do” on Wii 2.
April 18, 2011
Retro Studios is hot off a four game win streak thanks to Donkey Kong Country Returns and the Metroid Prime trilogy, but according to them, what they’re working on for Wii’s successor is “a project everyone wants us to do”.
I spoke with two different people at the Austin, Texas based first party developer for Nintendo to see if I could get any more information on the “Wii 2″ which many are calling Project Cafe. Whatever the system’s name ends up being, my sources at Retro Studios said that their company was amongst the very first to receive a development kit and that they’ve been on board developing a new project ever since.
... ■Don’t listen to anyone who says new Nintendo console will launch by end of 2011. They are idiots. This holiday season is all about the 3DS and Nintendo’s E3 show will focus on that.
... ■Nintendo is thinking about launching Zelda: Skyward Sword around the same time as Wii 2 since Wii 2 is backwards compatible with Wii 1 games. They want to follow the same strategy when they launched Pokemon Black/White when 3DS was coming out.
....
Unless Skyward Sword has been delayed to 2012, aren't these two points kind of contradictory?
Man, I love this time, the crazy rumours are hilarious. If only there was a smash brothers game in development now too, so we could get double the crazy.

Could this mean something?

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Smash Bros. is in development for Super Wii. It's probably being kept Top Secret by the Ninteninjas, and Sakurai likely was one of the first to get a devkit.

Considering the money each of the Smash games have made, yea, it's almost guaranteed that Sakurai has had a dev kit for a long while and is in the early stages of a Smash sequel.

Well, I'm almost 100% sure this means a brand new Metroid Prime title of some kind. What else would 'everyone' want to see Retro do? Especially after Other M?
Also:
Can't help but wonder if there's any chance in hell the 'vitality sensor' stuff is going to play into the new console in some way.

I like how the guy responsible for Other M basically said that the Prime series wasn't canon or something like that, and then OM doesn't sell well.
I just hope we don't have "protect soldiers" bullshit again. That was the only part of MP3 I didn't like.
I'm pretty sure it would be F-Zero or Starfox, two prominent franchises missing from the Wii.
Man.
I don't know which one I'd love to see Retro do more, actually.
Guess I gotta go with StarFox. If they could make a StarFox game with the production values of, say, Halo meets Ace Combat, with the online component that would imply, that would be some heavy shit.
Always wondered about F-Zero a little, though. There are some strange suggestions in the background material of F-Zero that seem to indicate the races take place in the same time frame and universe as Metroid. It would be...interesting if a team decided to go with that and see where it all lead.
I thought F-Zero was a similar-timeline-alternate-reality Star Fox.
Considering McCloud's in the game flying his Arwing.
I don't have the specifics, but Captain Falcon works as a bounty hunter for the same Federation that Samus does.

It's not a Star Fox game if it's not a rail shooter. Even Adventures and Assault, as bad as they are at being Star Fox games, mostly stick to rails for the shooting parts.
And if anyone's going to make a new F-Zero, it should be Sega god damn it. Get the old AV crew back together and make that shit.
The DS game was not a rail shooter and yet it was also a competent Star Fox game, praised as doing a better job at it than Assault or especially Adventures.

I hated it, though.
Personally.
It might have averaged out to a better game, but nothing in that game was anywhere near as good as the on rails, flying, shooting levels in Assault.

I loved Star Fox Command. Probably my second favorite Star Fox game.
Star Fox 64 3D is pretty much the reason I'm going to buy a 3DS come the end of the summer.
I bet anything that Retro's new game is Star Fox. I would kill to see how they would add their own brand of fantastic art direction to a new Star Fox game.
Give F-Zero to either Sega or Monster...it's night past time we got a new game in that franchise.
Edit: I wonder if Retro will bring on enough employees to be able to do more than one project at a time...because as much as I want a new game by them, I also want Donkey Kong Country Returns 2: This time with more Dixie.

wait people want retro to make a prime 4? i be down with that since i am a fan of the prime series, but how will the OM head guy feel since he kind of co made the series, if he is nuts with his work like Lucas is with star wars now i can see this as a good thing. maybe he may quit.
Star Fox sure is a franchise I wouldn't mind if they pretended never existed. No siree.
The only good one was made by Nintendo.
Unfortunately, that was also the only one made by Nintendo.
Starfox - Argonaut
Starfox 64 - Nintendo
Starfox Adventures - Rare
Starfox Assault - Namco (so bad that even Nintendo tried to warn everyone by letting you rent it a week before it released)

Assault had its moments, but I won't derail the thread to go into it. Overall it was a forgettable game.

My understanding of the first Star Fox was that it was created and designed by Nintendo, and Argonaut just assisted in programming due to their familiarity with the SuperFX chip (because they created it).

My prediction would be the next Mario is at launch, then they send out MarioKart out before/after Halo 5 in 2013, then Smash comes 'round in 2014.
