Here's the credits for Star Fox (people who likely had nothing to do with the game itself in blue).
Nintendo
Executive Producer: Hiroshi Yamauchi
Producer: Shigeru Miyamoto
Director: Katsuya Eguchi
Assistant Director: Yoichi Yamada
Character Design / Concept: Takaya Imamura
Model Designer: Tsuyoshi Watanabe
Music: Hajime Hirasawa
Sound Effects: Koji Kondo
Argonaut
3D-FX System Technology: Carl Graham
3D-FX System Technology: Pete Warnes
Programmer: Dylan Cuthbert
Programmer: Giles Goddard
Programmer: Krister Wombell
At the very least it was a co-development, not "pretty much made" by Argonaut.
Nintendo had the overall idea of what they wanted and the adminstration/production side. Cuthbert was the main designer and so on of the game - you have to remember back in those days that 'Programmer' was also 'Designer'. Then you had Giles Goddard on that team as well, who went on to work for Nintendo on Mario 64 and Doshin the Giant.
Otherwise we would have ended up with programmer art in the game. Since all the levels pretty much had to be made entirely with code, they couldn't just model them in max and call it a day.
Also those two 3DFX guys had a lot of involvement as well.. since shipping the 3DFX chip was basically shipping a console on a cart. If you're gonna blue them, you'd have to blue the Producer, Director, and Co-Director on the Nintendo side aswell.
But in the end, the game played like a tech demo. Starfox 64 played like a game, because 3D itself was no longer impressive enough to carry it.
If Nintendo is really handing it off to Retro for their next console, I would hope and assume that they're going to trim the fat of the series. Go back to the original team, make the enemies Star Wolf, hire some actual decent voice actors, and go back to the action/camp nature instead of trying to be all dramatic and serious like Assault and Armada did. They did the same thing with DKC and it worked heavily in their favor.

Do you have a source that says Dylan Cuthbert did the level design?
Edit: And I blued the 3DFX people because they almost certainly had absolutely nothing to do with any aspect of the game's design. They designed the hardware (and maybe stuff like the programming interface) it runs on. Producers and Directors have a direct impact on the game design. Directors in the SNES days often had a direct hand in the design process, and if not, then they (along with Producers) at least looked over the design and asked for changes if they saw something they didn't like. That is a significant portion of the design process on the game.
http://www.blamethecontrolpad.com/argonaut/argonaut2.htm has some interesting information about the development of Starfox. At the very least, Nintendo had a big influence on gameplay direction, although the implementation of the precise details was presumably chiefly in the hands of Argonaut.

- Retro Studios working on game for Wii successor
- taking on “a project everyone wants us to do”
- information comes from two sources within Retro
- company was amongst the very first to receive a development kit
- have been working ever since on a new project for the Wii successor
Zoid and the rest of the crew at Retro Studios have my support in anything they do. If they brought them back in for a new Metroid game on the Wii successor...
A poster on another board reminded me that Suda 51 stated the next No More Heroes game was going to be on the next Nintendo console. So I guess if they've planned it for a while and they already have a devkit, we might see No More Heroes 3 as an early Super Wii title.
I'm thinking it's Star Fox, people have been asking for a Retro helmed SF for years now.
The problem is that Retro is so good at what they do that it could be anything, including their own original non-Nintendo game. Everyone wants them to make everything. About the only thing that has never been talked about is a Mario game.

That's because Miyamoto's hand picked Team Mario does very well by themselves...they need no help. :P
Seriously though, I would love to see a new IP from Retro rather than a known franchise...but then again, Retro have proven they can take material near and dear to people, and make it awesome.

Not sure I feel F-Zero would be the right game for them either. Monster could probably pull off an awesome F-Zero judging by how awesome ExciteBots was.
Maybe it's simply Donkey Kong Country Returns 2? I mean, I'd love another one and it sold pretty well.
I doubt it's Metroid Prime - the games aren't that big in Japan and I would guess they would want something for close to launch that would appeal to all audiences.
I really hope we see a continuation of the VC and Wiiware - I think they just lacked the infrastructure to really push the titles on their correctly. I also hope that if the new controller has a traditional layout in some form that they make it Classic Controller and Cube compatible somehow.
Here's an idea - instead of having your best developer slavishly stroke your ego by remaking dead games from twenty years ago that are tied down by rosy nostalgia of very limited design and only a handful of nerds care about, let them make their own shit.
Who knows, maybe they'll manage to drag you kicking and screaming into 2006.
Does anyone know how the Japanese sales of Other M compared to the Japanese sales of the Prime series? I know a bunch of us were put off by the heavy handedness and Samus as Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary (only heavily sedated), but maybe they ate that stuff up.
At any rate, considering Retro has done such stellar work on Prime and DKC Returns, I'm not shocked in the least they'd be among the first to get Wii2 devkits.

Fairly close by the looks of wiki - about 56k in the first two weeks in Japan is mentioned, Prime hit about 78k over there. Of course the bigger difference is in NA where Prime did 1.5 mil and Other M did less than 500k.

I'm usually spot on with these things, trust me, they're working on Buck Bumble 2.

A recent interview I read confirmed that that series is quite dead, based on sales of Desperate Struggle.

Is it true? Who can say...
I would say that DS was great, except the final boss had soured my experience with the rest of the game.

Hm. Well, if the goal of Other M was to get Japanese people to care about Metroid more, that sure didn't work.

Other M is the only Metroid game that hasn't interested me. Seeing as I bought a Wii primarily so I could play Zeld and Metroid games, that's saying a lot.

I'd say you're missing out. The game plays like a literal 3D version of the 2D games. The story is nifty with a wanky execution. ect... It's worth a rental at least.

I enjoyed Other M a lot. That's all I have to say about that.
The controls in Other M were a dealbreaker for me. I still bought it, but I fought the controls more than any of the enemies, so I traded it in. Id love to see a 3ds port of it with an improved scheme, as the story elements were good and I only made it about 5 hours in.
I wish retro would take the gameplay and apply their art talents. Unless they have a plan to overhaul the prime gameplay into something different. Three games was enough. One of the major things I like about Metroid is that the series tries new things. I hate when series have bi-annual/annual sequels that copy and paste the basic gameplay over and over and over.

They should take over on Zelda, the gameplay hasnt changed in any meaningful way since OoT.
Got it for my birthday, Jan 2nd, and still haven't played it. I still haven't even played Mario Galaxy 2! It's just... Hard to view the Wii games on my large HDTV.
I will say that, after surveying PA for some choice games, both Muramasa and MadWorld don't particularly suffer when played on HDTVs. MadWorld isn't really grabbing me like Muramasa, but it cost me less than $10 so whatever.
I really hope the next system is backwards-compatible. I have so many Wii/GC games but the Wii is now a dedicated Netflix box for my parents.
I bought a Wii twice, sold it twice. It just didn't work well in my dorm room / college apartment setup. I want the next console to work in a sitting-at-a-desk scenario. I like to play games on a computer monitor sitting in a chair rather than several feet away on a couch. Oblige my wishes Nintendo!

Kinda funny how he went from being the dude that made 3D games on systems that very few other people made 3D games on, to making 2D games on the PS3.

If they do another metroid I would prefer it was more like a metroid game though. Corruption was just an FPS with morph ball puzzles
I'd love to see Star fox given proper treatment in a console title and 64 is getting a remake so it would be a nice follow up.
(I appreciate all feedback, so take a few minutes to check it out)

It sounds insane at first but give it five minutes.
Hell, who knows.
Retro wouldn't be my first choice, but I don't doubt their talents.
But I wouldn't argue Sega doing it again either.

More indepth motion sense, although the main controller will have it, it will be secondary to the actual controlls.
HD graphics that will be as good as ps3 if not better.
The controller will not have a nunchuck, but will be more closer to a combination of a 360 controller combined with an N64 or Gamecube controller.
Motion controls will be full body and controller itself.
I believe this console will not have anything to do with 3d ever.
