God, Im so torn about this game. On the one hand I want it, like now. But on the other its going to result in me dropping like $1200 on a computer...
I was able to get a new Battlefield 3 worthy machine for a very affordable price, so you should probably try out this method:
Step 1: Win a Battlefield 3 worthy machine at a raffle during pax east.
Step 2: Make a smarmy and obnoxious post in this thread about how you won a computer in a raffle at pax east.
I'm also upgrading my rig tee-hee! But I'm spending around $500 because I've already got the case, vidcard and PSU. The only big problem is that my replacement monitor is coming in on Monday (Had to RMA it)... and they're giving me a nice LED LCD but it's 1920x1080, I will either have to run the game at a lower resolution, or maybe upgrade my vidcard... hmm.. hm...
The main single player campaign is not co-op. There will some kind of separate mini-coop campaign that is supposedly some kind of hybrid between single player and multiplayer.
They give and they take away.
It's a start at least!

What video card do you have now? It seems likely we'll be getting at least some sort of refresh of the current to-of-the-line graphics cards before or around BF3's release, so unless what you've got is drastically underpowered for such a display, you might want to wait until the new hotness is out there. Or you can always drop another cool $500 on a GTX580 ;-)
While my soft-modded 6970 I purchased a couple months ago isn't quite as powerful as that, I still expect it to handle BF3 at 1080p like a champ. Maybe not with EVERY bell and whistle turned on, but it should still look pretty sexy. And for $275, it was WAY cheaper for 80-90% of the performance of the GTX580
Choose your vehicles and your loadouts and fight endless hordes of monsters for a highscore
I keep waiting for one of these military simulators to deal with monsters instead of generic enemy human soldiers. I want to protect a military convoy in my helicopter against a swarm of dragons or something<3
I like the cut of your motherfucking jib.

Don't even think about using the 460 for 1080p. The 580 is the reason I can run BC2 in 1080p.
Be careful though, the 580 caused such an insane framerate rise that I was super glad I got a 120hz monitor. The screen tearing would have driven me insane by now, I generally get between 80 and 120 fps on BC2.
Am I a consumer whore because I'm planning on buying this game on at least two different platforms, and maybe even 3? I'm definitely getting it for PS3 and PC, and depending on if I have friends who buy it for 360 or not, I might snag it on there as well.
I definitely am gonna need to do some work on my PC to get it BF3 ready though. I tried running Witcher 2 the other day at max settings and it was a slide show. I can barely run Witcher 2 on medium settings.

My new monitor will be 75Hz so I shouldn't have too much trouble. I'll be upgrading to an i5 2500k which I will overclock, and the 460 overclocks very very nicely, I don't think I should have to much trouble, as long as I keep AA off. Or I'll just run at 1680x1050 :P
120hz monitors down here go for around $700 so that's kinda out of my reach.
I'm a sad bear, my ancient overclocked dual core only just copes with bc2. Definitely going to need an upgrade to run this. Which means new mobo, processor and RAM

A real 6970, or a 6950 that you can soft-mod? I got a 6950 back in Feb and soft-modded it to a 6970. Not sure if the newer 6950 2GB cards are still capable of doing that, which is why I bought mine when I did.
And if the GTX580 is really the target for BF3's graphics, then a 460 should still be able to play this game. Might not be pretty at 1080p, but you should still be able to run it Satsu.

You could always just SLI the 460 when you pick up the 2500k. I just picked up a GTX 570 which is basically a GTX 480 that runs cooler, and Im hoping to run BF3 at 1680x1050 with minimal problem (but Im also kinda banking on BF3 being a CPU hog like BF2 and picking up a 2600k...)
I totally forgot my motherboard supports Crossfire/SLI, probably because I've never considered doing that, but with Battlefield 3 coming out that may not be a bad idea. Unfortunately, 5870s are going for 300-500 dollars. What a load of shit. I'd be better off buying a GTX 580!

Why bother with a GTX 580, two GTX 460s in SLI are functionally equivalent in almost every aspect to the 580 and you can get both for about $250 less than one 580. I've only got one 460 at the moment but the card I have (factory overclocked 460) is only going for $139 with rebate on newegg atm. Seems to beat out the $540 or whatever for a 580.

Because you can put 2 580s into 1 computer, where you cant put 4 460s.
For reference, I just upgraded and have the overclocked Twin Frozr II 580 GTX (+ 8gb xms3 ddr3 ram, p67 mobo, i5 2500k unlocked & SDHDD). It is a thing of beauty and runs everything on everything.
They run very smooth, which I find makes it very difficult to play other games that just feel slow in comparison.
But it is pointless for me, I will be getting this on my million dollar PC that I will build as close to the release date of this game to ensure maximum value.

COD makes a lot of tradeoffs in order to run at 60fps on consoles. Tiny maps, no destructibility, rather dated visuals (that are only partially saved by the art assets). But it does what it does well, so it will always have a loyal following.
I'm sure there will be people who don't play BF3 because it doesn't run at 60fps. However I'd rather see technology move forward then be chained by the 60fps shackles. And that goes for the next console generation as well.
Not that it matters too much to me either, as I'm getting this on PC as well. At a glorious 60fps no less ;-)
Im going to be very very sad if the computer I build cant handle BF3 as well as I want it to. Either that or I'll just bitch about shitty coding.
EDIT: Actually, Im going to be super sad if theres an i7/GTX 5xx bug like there is with Core 2 Duos and GTX 4xx
It seems like yesterday I built my i7-920, 6GB DDR3, ATI 5870 machine to get the most out of Bad Company 2. It really wasn't that long ago. Then they discontinued that CPU socket, Battlefield 3 made its appearance, and my PC started crying because it saw its first grey hair. I tried to reassure her, but now I can't help but see wrinkles!
Watching high resolution footage of the multiplayer Rush demo they showed off, though, it doesn't seem like it's pushing the boundaries that much from Bad Company 2. The environments are just more rich - subways and city streets and parks instead of rather simplistic deserts or jungles - and obviously animations and some particle effects are better, but it didn't look like anything my machine couldn't handle. Perhaps they lowered the visual fidelity a little for multiplayer to accommodate 64 players online blowing everything up? Hopefully lowering shadows (I never care too much about that) and disabling AA will be enough to run that game at high settings.

I'd be surprised if there weren't extensive options available to downgrade the graphics a ton, making it playable on less-than-optimal machines. Like, I'm sure people wouldn't mind not seeing the individual stitching on an their character's pants if it meant being able to play without buying a brand new PC.

Man, I'm so glad that I don't demand perfect visuals from my system. My lone 5850 has served me well and I expect it to serve me well for some time yet. I care about the destructible environments so much more that running my game at ultra-perfect settings.
Yeah, I very rarely use AA on my games, I just want constant 45-60fps with the highest settings possible, but will start reducing settings in order to maintain those fps.

This may sound pedantic, but there is one thing I HATE about BC2's engine, which is bloom cancelling out anti aliasing on edges of objects. It does not matter if I am running 32x MSAA through Nvidia Inspector. That shit will not go away. It better be fucking GONE in BF3.

The thing BC2 tasked hardest in my computer was the processor. It's probably a better idea to get a good processor before you decide on a new graphics card
The prices on AMD 58xx and 68xx cards are being driven to stupid levels by Bitcoin miners since they're currently the best $/hour performers. AMD 69xx and all the NVidia cards are sitting at their normal levels, though.
If you have a 5850 or 5870, you can probably sell it for (at least) what you paid for it and upgrade to something more recent. It's insane.
