what makes me shit bricks is that infantry combat has never really been that good in BF games, but in the BF3 alpha it was better and tighter than any other multiplayer FPS I've ever played.
Can I ask how much are some of you guys spending to upgrade or get a new pc to play this game? I want to know if I'm crazy for spending 1400 for this lol

Uhhh
Yes.
You can build a machine that'll run this on a pretty high level for about 700 dollars. I'm spending 150 dollars for a GTX 460 to replace my five year old GPU, which ran BC2 just fine.
But it depends on what you're spending that 1400 dollars on. If it's got a GTX 590 in there, then fuck yeah go for it. If you're got the cash, why not?
I've never understood highest-end GPUs unless you're doing some multi monitor craziness, for half as much you can get one that will play any current games at the highest observable detail in anything other than fine tooth-screenshot analysis (max vs not max AA), and then 6 months down the line you can buy another $250 card which would positively annihilate the $500 one from 6 months prior
I mean my 560 positively takes games apart and I paid like... $170 for it, it seems graphics cards really have been outpacing games lately

That's been true for like over four years running now (the days since big bad Crysis 1 made everyone shit their pants). I guess one of the many reasons this game is getting attention is the fact it's actually going to challenge grossly-overpowered PC hardware for a change now.
I'm still running a frigging GTX 260. And still not giving a fuuuuuck.
I really get confused when I hear how dead PC gaming is considering that the barrier for entry is so low now, the cheapest computer at best buy with a $150 video card can run everything
Ok thanks for the responses, and that's why im asking. I'm building a new computer and kind of want to go top of the line, BUT at the same time im starting to realize that I don't care to much if i can't max everything out. At the moment I intend on getting a 580, but I am really considering getting a 570 for $200 less or even SLI 460. I have been doing a lot of research as of late about this GPU thing.
Should be more than sufficient to play. Only thing I have been considering is an SSD for the games coming out this year, but it's hard to justify such a high price per GB nowadays.

Hit up the Computer Build Thread, theyre willing to answer all your questions and can help you determine whether full build or select upgrade is the best option for you.

They did say it will have PC requirements very similar to Bad Company 2. I don't believe Battlefield 3 will challenge us too much, even though it looks fantastic. In fact, I think it still looks a lot like Bad Company 2, the key difference being some of the places you fight in have become a lot more complex, particularly the cities.
I do wish I could find a second ATI HD 5870 for cheap, though, so I could Crossfire my current machine. To buy it now on eBay it's more expensive than some of the latest cards. If anyone has an old 5870 they'd like to part with... :P

Looks nothing like BC2. BC2 is almost cartoonish compared to BF3.

Well, theres a difference between being able to run it, and being able to run it and have it look pretty.

On the plus side: I just picked up a Logitech G35 7.1 Surround Sound headset. BC2 is pretty much totally orgasmic.
On the minus side: I had to move house to one without a landline, so I am stuck with uber crappy Australian satellite USB dongle net.
It's still worth waiting for minutes to join a server just so I can hear this mindblowing sound. War Tapes sounded amazing before, I literally would not have been able to comprehend the quality I am getting now.

Agreeing with this. The GPU market is extremely competitive for the producers today which has led to the fact that the consumers are getting really good hardware for relatively cheap prices. You do not need the flagship GPU's that cost 500 dollars to play the latest games on the highest settings anymore. You just do not. Especially since the industry has mellowed out a lot when it comes to pushing graphical boundaries due to the console-factor.
Besides, BF3 does not look that much better than BC2 apart from particle effects, and you can run BC2 on highest settings at a decent resolution with several generations old GPU hardware
Don't want to clog up the thread with my ignorant PC build questions, but would a good starting point be an Intel i7 Sandy Bridge quad-core? Then maybe think about graphics card options next?
I've seen people mention that the difference between an i5 and i7 would be negligible, but the cost doesn't seem that different and I'd like something that kicks ass for music production etc too.

The cost difference between i5 and i7 is $100, 50% of the i5's price. There's a computer build thread in Moe's Technology Tavern that would be better suited to help you.

This is good to hear.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
Yeah fair enough.. I've never actually ventured outside of Games and Technology vanilla, guess I finally have a reason.
Regarding the tower on Caspian Border, I'd already assumed it probably wouldn't be destructible, hot damn that is a fun bit of news. I can only imagine sitting up top as a sniper, and suddenly hearing that awful groan of tonnes of vertical metal starting to give way... thank God for our complimentary DICE parachutes!

In other news my mobo has finally started to die due to my slightly ridiculous overclock. One RAM slot has failed entirely and the audio ports are on the way out. I just pray that it holds up for two weeks until my tax check arrives. Then it's i7 time, baby.
I wish there was a discount for buying both the PC and console versions at once. I want to be able to to play with my Xbox gaming group, but man, I also want to play on 64 player maps.
Anyone know if there is a feature list for the console versions? I would like to see just how neutered the game will be as I will be playing on the 360.
And stop shaking your head at the screen as you read that, damn it.

Aside from being capped at 24 players for multiplayer, the only thing I can remember hearing that's different is the lower graphical fidelity (still looks incredible for a console game though). And supposedly they're working to add the commo rose, but unlike the pc version, it won't be available until after release.
I don't mind the graphical difference, but the lower player count really stings. I'm still getting the 360 version, since that's where most of my multiplayer shooter friends are and I've grown to prefer the couch & controller ergonomics over the desk & WASD situation, but man, I wish they were at least able to bring it to 32 players.
If they do a good job of scaling the maps down it shouldn't be too bad--most of the fighting gets clustered around the capture points anyhow which makes extremely large maps a bit superfluous, but still, 64 players is quite a lot more than 24. I'm getting more and more tempted to buy both versions.

I am in the same boat. I do not have a single friend who will be playing it on the computer and I really do not feel like building a new desktop so soon after getting a new laptop. The main thing that gets me about the player limit is the impact when utilizing vehicles. 32 players on your team means that one guy in the jet acts as a much higher force multiplier than taking away 1/12th of your team to provide the same impact.
Yeah, vehicles is the main issue. mainly because though I love the atmosphere of vehicles impacting my infantry game, I still mainly want to run around on foot doing the infantry thing. But if there is only 12 people on a side...
we quickly find ourselves with everyone in a tank or plane and nobody on the ground.
I know it was fine in BC2. But 12v12 just seems very low for this type of game. I was always 100% for 360, but now that I focus on that fact, I may start a PC campaign. Then again my main buddy who is gunna play with me is a mac owner...so I doubt thatll work.
Dang you guys picked up those G35 headsets at a good time because now there back up to 95 bucks. Wish I would have seen that deal
Eh, I'll stick with my Sennheisers. I get great positional audio with them, and everything sounds super crisp (especially gun sounds and footsteps). I can only imagine how great BF3 is going to sound, given how amazing the audio in BC2 is already

Unless, I missed a tweet.
